Nichole’s Picks 1/2 + 1/3

So, I’ve got nothing.  I apologize.  I’ve been away all week (and still am) and while I looked for special events for the actual weekend, I didn’t find anything new.  As you all know, my go to outdoor weekend activity (when you can’t go sledding, showshoeing, or skiing, is to go ice skating.  Go find a great rink!

Pick #1:  Rockport’s New Year Eve!

New Year’s Eve is obviously tonight, however, and if you’re looking for a FANTASTIC way to spend the evening with children (or without) head to Rockport.

Rockport’s New Year’s Eve celebration has more music packed into a nice walking proximity than one can even imagine.

Check out the full schedule HERE!

Pick #2:

The Harvard Museum of Natural History

This place remains one of my all time favorite for a quick education trip into Cambridge along with a great lunch.

NEW VIDEO: SNOWY OWL AT CAPTAIN JOES!

Snowy Owl Gloucester Massachusetts ©Kim Smith 2015So many thanks to Joey and Tom Ring for the wonderful tip. The Snowy is gorgeous!!! My right arm is a little unsteady with robo-cast but still managed to get a few moments. Notice how the Snowy Owl rotates its head, giving him nearly a 360 degree viewing vantage. The crows and a hawk* were noisily dive-bombing the Snowy, but he held his ground. I hope we see him again soon.

*Chris Anderson reports that the perching and diving bird is a Peregrine Falcon.

Who’s gonna let a little snow stop them from manning the pit?  Not this guy!

A Snowy Owl stopped by to check out the action-

Starting out-

The set-up

20151230_093135-01.jpeg

Country style boneless pork ribs hit the kettle.  I used hickory chunks and cherry chips, charcoal set up- snake method and tossed the water pan from the Western Mountain Smoker to keep the ribs from getting dried out.

20151230_101852_hdr-01.jpeg

Once they hit 150 internal I pulled them off, cut them up into cubes and reapplied the rub.  Melted a stick of butter and mixed it with Texas Pete hot sauce and coated them before I reapplied the rub.

Live Blogging Snowy Owl Here @CaptJoeLobster While @KimSmithDesigns Vidrotapes

I had just set up the @webergrills kettle to smoke up some pork burnt ends when Tim Ring pointed out the snowy Owl.  Immediately I called Kim Smith and she’s getting some great footage right now as the ravens swoop down and try to shoo it away.
