My View of Life on the Dock
I popped into the Bookstore of Gloucester on Main St recently as I hadn’t been by in a while. Winter is a good time to gather up some reading material and cozy up. They are getting ready to celebrate their 50th (!) anniversary this year which should make it extra fun to stop by. You can follow them on Facebook as their social media person (Nicole I believe) is doing a great job! It’s a warm and inviting atmosphere and not at all overwhelming like large box stores can sometimes be. Interesting small displays are set up in several areas to grab your attention. Let’s just say it’s a good thing I didn’t take my wallet with me this time! Best wishes for a great anniversary year Bookstore of Gloucester and owner Arwen!

First Blush…

Hi Joey,
It’s Butch Nigro here letting you know that our friend Captain Sam has passed on.
Our whole family wanted to thank you for all of your support for our Dad through the
years and for all of the hard work you and your team do for our beloved Cape Ann.
I put together some words on the website and hope you can find the time to
mention his passing to your readers. Looks like we will most likely be meeting each other
in person once again very soon…and I look forward to seeing a fellow “Brick and Books” member once again!

Best to you and your Staff-

“Captain Sam’s spirit will be felt throughout the streets of Cape Ann for as long as we can keep his story in our hearts. His is a story of a man not only “in love” with a landscape, but also a “main character” in its mystical scenery. For over 5 decades Captain Sam became “one” with the Gloucester shoreline…”there he is!”– “There’s Sam in the Samay!”…people passing by would shout & wave… a blast of Sams waaayyy to big of an air horn on the seasoned “a bit too top heavy” fish assault vessel would pierce the air and his leather like hands would raise up a huge Striper or a gigantic Lobsta for the admiring public to gawk at in amazement….Hooray!! Oh Wow!! “Look!” …Sam always had a catch…and he always had an eye for the scene– This “Old Salt” knew that the lore and roar of the Gloucester sea and all the mysteries within its confines would only grow with each and every soul he touched.
And now our beloved Captain Sam has left this cherished shore to explore other shores beyond anyones reach…and he wanted us to know that we can always hear his voice, the cheers of joy and the sounds of that “air horn a blarin” in every Glostoar –you just have to know how to listen to the sounds of the colors–SJN III”

Quitting smoking is another significant benefit of using CBD Oil. Similar to it’s role in supporting individuals in quitting their addictions to harder drugs, CBD Oil can also aid people in overcoming their addiction to cigarettes. Research studies have demonstrated that individuals who used a placebo inhalers experienced no change in their overall cigarette consumption, whereas those who used CBD Oil smoked nearly 40% less cigarettes on average per day. This finding suggests that CBD Oil can be a valuable tool in smoking cessation efforts, helping you break free from nicotine addiction and improve overall health and wellness.

We took a ride recently and noticed this new “installation” on Pebble Beach. I was soothed by the tide coming in and rolling out musically over the resident pebbles.

Thursday, January 16th
10:00 – 11:45 am
10:00 – 10:30 am: Coffee & light refreshments
10:30 – 11:30 am: Presentation
11:30 – 11:45 am: Q&A/Conclusion.
Join us for a detailed discussion of recent and ongoing restoration efforts at the Museum with contractor and mason Roger Tremblay and Director of Education & Visitor Services Caleb McMurphy. In the past few years, Tremblay, and his firm A+R Construction, have headed some of the most significant restoration projects in the Museum’s history, including the renovation of the Museum’s iconic 13th-century French monastery arches, originally situated in the Franciscan monastery of Couvent des Cordeliers, in Gers, France. In 2024, Tremblay’s team intervened to save a portion of the “towers” section of the building, modeled off of an 11th-century Norman keep, which had been badly damaged by winter weather.
Over the course of an hour, Roger and Caleb will discuss these and other ongoing and upcoming restoration projects, using photos taken during the work itself to give a look behind the curtain at just what it takes to maintain such a unique and historic building. After this, audience members will have a chance to ask questions of their own and get an opportunity to become involved with Hammond Castle Museum’s continuing mission to preserve John Hays Hammond Jr.’s legacy.
Member savings apply.
General Admission: $15
Proceeds from this program will support the restoration and preservation of the Hammond Castle Museum.
Anne-Lise inherited some Norwegian ski sweater embroidery that was never used. It was time to put it to its rightful use.
