Everyone in Gloucester should read the The Gillnetter, the Gloucester High School newspaper. Let’s give the young journalists finding their voice some readers. It’s good.
What’s it like to write for a high school paper nowadays? This one has embraced the digital world so it’s earth-friendly. It’s a beauty with a very easy layout. I dove in for one story but stuck around. There are editorials such as this one about the high school bathrooms needing attention by Rachel Alexander with original art by Rachel Nearis; actionable information; unexpected topics; and lots of local news likethis inspiring report by Hanna Zuidema or this one “pizza lovers of Gloucester Have Spoken” by Corynn Ulrich. Did you know The Gillnetter journalists were invited to the Boston Globe?

What brought my attention to The Gillnetter was anticipation for a story about the Civil War coat from students at the high school. Caroline Enos interviewed George and Charles before April school vacation. We hoped she’d come to Awesome Gloucester pitch night to support them and hang out. That she did. Thanks to her open notebook and scoop we have a record of a lovely testimonial delivered by Russell Hobbs. You can read Caroline Enos’ article here.

I can’t wait to sneak some wine into the movie theater and watch this new mom flick with a bunch of my best mom friends. Yoga pants, unshowered, split ends flying, some bon bons, and a botabox.
No I-totally-have-my-act-together-have-perfect-kids-make-no-mistakes-and-every-day-is-amazingly-awesome types allowed. Sorry….but that would totally defeat the purpose.

“Whales: An Unforgettable Journey” premieres tonight at 8pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12. Originally shown in IMAX theaters, this 45-minute documentary shows breathtaking close up encounters with whales and dolphins. It’s narrated by Patrick Stewart.
The movie is produced by the Ocean Alliance (the Snotbot people, whose world headquarters are at the old Paint Factory on Rocky Neck.) They were kind enough to give give us permission to show this movie on Cape Ann TV.
Here’s more about the Ocean Alliance and the remarkable work they do: Ocean Alliance collects a broad spectrum of data on whales and ocean life relating particularly to toxicology, behavior, bioacoustics, and genetics. From that data they work with their scientific partners to advise educators and policy makers on wise stewardship of the oceans to: reduce pollution, prevent the collapse of marine mammal populations, maintain human access to fish and other sea life, and promote ocean and human health.
The movie also airs on Tuesday, May, 3 at 7 pm; Wednesday, May 4 at 10 am and 2 pm; Thursday, May 5 at 5am and 6:30pm; Friday, May, 6 at 7:30pm; Saturday, May 7 at 2pm and 10pm; and Sunday, May 8 at 12pm and 11pm.

Although described as common along both the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts, this raft of velvety black ducks was new and different to my eyes. The Surf Scoters were here for several days gathering along Cape Ann’s backshore and feeding heartily several hundred yards off the beach. Both in the evening and the following early morning that I found them, they were first to arrive on the scene, soon joined by a paddling of Buffleheads and then several Common Eiders, and all amicably diving together.
Fairly far off shore at least we can catch a comparative glimpse of the difference between the male and female Surf Scoter (the female is far right).
The male Surf Scoter’s well-defined stark white patches against ebony feathers lends this seaduck its common name, “Skunk-headed Coot.” But it is the scoter’s bulbous-at-the-base orange, black and white patterned bill that I find interesting and almost comical. The female is a plainer dull blackish-brownish with light colored patches, one behind each eye and at the base of the bill.
I would love to know if any of our readers have seen Surf Scoters, when and where, if you have a moment to write. Thank you!
While watching them feeding and courting in the surf, several times it appeared as though they were squaring off, as in the top photo, and preparing to promenade in a hoedown!

Red Sox are in 1st place this morning…who knows…the Big Papi’s Farewell Tour might end up in a world series! One could hope 😀
