BREAKING: PAIR OF SWANS AT NILES AND HENRY’S PONDS!!

Pair Cape Ann Swans third year swans copyright Kim SmithA pair of swans was spotted at Niles Pond this morning by my friend Lyn. I stopped by the Pond at 8:15 to have a look. They were on the far side of Niles, getting ready to take off and was only able to take a few quick photos. The pair flew overhead in the direction of Henry’s Pond. After doing the podcast with Joey and the wonderful Gloucester Stage Company cast, I raced over to Henry’s. In the meantime, the two had returned to Niles, but were chased away by our Mr. Swan. As I arrived at Henry’s they flew in!

This is evident by the patches of brown feathers and dullish pink bills, although the bill of the larger of the two is gaining a more coral-orange hue. I am hopeful that Mr. Swan will find a new mate and if we are fortunate, this newly arrived on the scene pair will decide to make Cape Ann their home too!Pair Cape Ann Swans copyright Kim SmithIf you catch sight of swans at any of our area ponds or in the harbor, please write in and let me know. Thank you so much!

Smith was born and raised in the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans, and began his career polishing his sophisticated and dramatic vocal delivery at a young age. Today he thrills audiences with his New Orleans Jazz, Blues, Creole and Cajun flavored music touring extensively throughout the United States and Europe.

Hurricane Katrina took his home in New Orleans and he moved to Cape Ann, where he now lives and shares his Creole and Cajun heritage.

Bring a friend or bring a lunch to this mid-day concert and enjoy an all-star performance.

Stage Fort Visitor Center is officially open for the season. It was a full house last night.

Speaking of generosity: I recognized many of the returning volunteers who fill the shifts necessary to greet and assist all who walk through the door. Or around the gorgeous wrap around porch. The volunteers are a fun, dedicated group.

The opening always feels optimistic and festive. Local restaurants provided tasty signature appetizers and munchies. Laura Baker, proprietor of Castle Manor Inn, kept the table looking great all night.

Everyone takes a few moments to announce their business and any updates. Last night was no different, for instance: Vista Motel has a new, big pool; Cape Ann Marina will be making it easier for people to rent boats by matching clients with captains and vessels; the upcoming schooner race is not ‘competitive’, right?; the new concierge for Beauport Hotel put up his hand and a hello; and Sarah Oaks is fabulously readying the Maritime Gloucester shop.

I let people know that one HarborWalk marker may not be available for Hunt the HarborWalk tracing. It’s the marker at Norman’s Woe in Solomon Jacobs Park and public landing. The park should be open this weekend– and throughout the summer. Keep in mind it’s only a temporary look and opening. The park will close back up after the busy summer season. They may install that HarborWalk marker for the summer, too.

Shameless plug…

Since Fiesta is right around the corner (26 days to be exact!)  I thought someone might be looking for a momento or Father’s Day Gift for the Fiesta Fanatic in their lives.   I have a few sets of these left.  They are 4×4 coasters, with cork backs.   The set is $39.95.   If you are interested shoot me an email at shutterbythesea@comcast.net.    I’ll be working on putting up some Fiesta photographs on my website this weekend so if you want to check it out you can find my work at www.shutterbythesea.com.   All my printing is done locally by the awesome James and Anna at Cape Ann Giclee so check out their site as well!

New Car, New Car Keys…Needed a New Key Chain

I seriously needed a new key chain.  My commander was just that much taller than my new car and I’ve discovered…over and over again, each time I get behind the wheel…that my keys now actually whack me in the knee the entire time I drive.

So, as I often do when looking for something particular and yet original, I took to Etsy.

I custom ordered my color block “sun, sand, sea, and salt” key chain and it came in the mail yesterday.  Love.
