Gloucester Motif Monday: Lessons On the Water
Scenic spots for Gloucester’s beach swim lessons, part 1.
11:00am

From Jeremy Nestor at the YMCA:
“Beach Swim lessons are offered at Niles Beach on Tuesdays and Plum Cove on Thursdays starting July 5th. The free to member classes give children the tools they need to be safe at the beaches this summer! If you are not a member do not worry. You can still register for the Beach Swim Lessons for $50. Ages 3-5 at 11:00 am and 6-10 at 11:45 am.”

Weekly sailing camp options for kids and adults are available from the City of Gloucester through the Cape Ann YMCA. I will add additional sailing options in a separate post.
From Jeremy Nestor:
“YMCA Sailing Camp is a great way to experience all the scenic views Gloucester has to offer from a boat. Kids will learn the essential to sailing and build skills to last them a lifetime. The Cape Ann YMCA partnered with the City of Gloucester to run this recreational sailing program. We also offer adult sailing lessons on Tuesday and Thursday evenings because you don’t have to be a kid to learn the fun of sailing!”

Regarding The Lifeguard Situation
Dear Residents:
The Mayor’s office and administration is aware of the ongoing staffing shortages at our beaches, especially seen at Niles and Plum Cove. I can assure you that we are actively working on this issue, which is affecting all of the Commonwealth and especially here in Essex County. This staffing shortage is due to the fact that there is a high demand for lifeguards with a limited pool of qualified candidates currently available. Our DPW wisely suggested that we start our lifeguard hiring earlier in the season, which our team started conducting earlier than any past year.
Thankfully, we hired new lifeguards this past week with more interviews, training and outreach being conducted through next week. Additionally, I authorized a pay rate increase for lifeguard candidates to better compete in this tough job market.
As always, our larger beaches remain staffed, but the fact remains that young, certified and…

Fiesta Sunday Whites!
Wearing white on Fiesta Sunday has been a Sicilian tradition honoring St. Peter for generations. Weeks before Fiesta mothers and grandmothers shop for their families Fiesta Whites! Hundreds of people wearing their Fiesta Whites lined the streets of Gloucester during yesterday’s procession around central Gloucester. I personally thank all who allowed me to snap of photos of their beautiful children. How blessed are we to live in a community with deep rooted tradition, and culture. VIVA St. Pietro & VIVA Gloucester!

Some props need to go to this walker. A little help here….because I missed his name. We all know the first round of the Greasy Pole is a “Courtesy Round” and the flag can not be grabbed. But it is clear that victory would have been his if he were allowed to pull the flag down with him. Actually….with his hand wrapped around the pole…I’m not sure how he was able to leave it up there.

Setting up to be able to work upright

The plan-

First need to remove the rusted off bolts that secured the Performer’s horizontal cross brace square tubes. Sprayed them with WD-40, put a vice grip on the rusted bolt and another on the nut and with a little pressure they snapped right off, all four of them.

A photo to remember exactly where the Gas assist tank holder goes before I disassemble it.

For anyone that wold rather replace the bolts with more original starnuts and a bolt, the one that came on the Performer originally is 2 inches.

As I decided to run a threaded rod all the way through the square cross-brace tube and the holes where the bolts I removed was located and then cap the rod off with an acorn nut. Here was the hardware from Ace Hometown Hardware store, Gloucester MA.
4 acorn nuts, 8…
