LOCAL AUTHOR DEBUTS FIRST NOVEL AND CREATES COMMUNITY BUZZ

Penelope Door, the pen name of Gloucester resident and writer, is releasing her first novel, Wounds of the Past.

This work of fiction is set in a small New England city and focuses on Matilda Dante, a complex woman struggling with hazy childhood memories – the most haunting of which is the spontaneous appearance of crosses on her wrists. Matti’s stigmata, and the bizarre death of her mother, were both chronicled in the local newspapers but get her no closer to bringing to light hidden family secrets. Guided by a gilded talisman and unsullied love, Matti begins to unearth the wounds of the past, discovering a most unexpected path to her future.

“I am thrilled to be among the group of amazingly talented writers on Cape Ann and am eager to see the public’s reaction to my debut novel”, Penelope stated.

On Wednesday, August 31st, Wounds of the Past will be available on Amazon, at the Bookstore of Gloucester on Main Street and several copies will be donated to the Sawyer Free Library by the author.

Penelope Door will also be featured at the Eastern Point Lit House’s Third Thursday Open Mic night on September 15th at 261 Main Street, Gloucester at 7:30PM. No fee. No RSVP. Please stop by to hear a reading and to learn the true identity of “Penelope Door”.

About the Author:

Penelope Door, a proud Brooklyn NYC native, now calls Cape Ann home. When her loyal puppy, Benjamin, is not demanding all of her time she is hard at work on completing her next novel, Conviction, her memoir and a series of children’s books.

Dave says,
Mr Tim Gartland returns! Presently living in Nashville where he is the top-rated John Deere® Salesman,he not only plays a mean harmonica and sings like an angel, but he has just returned from Rio, where his synchronized spitting team brought home the Gold for the good ol’ USA.

He’s dragging in a crack team to black him up, featuring Mr. Tom West, dishpan handed keyboardist for the (Eupho) Mystics, Pete Henderson,on catarrh, who ,like me is still in recovery from last week’s Sax Gordon show, and Forrest “Tucker” Padgett to make butter on the skins. A great time!

Throwback Thursday: Founder of Farnham’s Restaurant grew up in Gloucester

Matilda “Tillie” Farnham was born and raised in Gloucester, before moving to Main Street in Essex where her husband Joseph ran a clam shucking business in the backyard. Twenty years later they opened their business on the gorgeous site overlooking the marsh and Hog Island. That year was 1938.

NEST QUESTIONS

Question, do you need to have a $249 unit in more than just an upstairs and a downstairs? Do you need them in every room? Do they cost more to wire?

Or any alternatives? I’d love to hear some real world testimonials.

Twinkling Marsh

This was a “one and done” 30 second shot over the Essex Marsh last night.   It was close to midnight and I was heading home and could not resist stopping, even though I’m a sissy when it comes to being out at night alone….the reflection of the house and the twinkling stars are what gave me a boost of courage lol!  BLM_6170-Edit-2

URGENT HELP NEEDED OR LABOR DAY/SCHOONER FESTIVAL WEEKEND FIREWORKS WILL BE CANCELLED

Gloucester Fireworks July 4 2016 -7 copyright Kim SmithHELP SAVE THE FIREWORKS!

WITHOUT AN INFUSION OF DONATIONS MADE BY FRIDAY AT MIDNIGHT, the Schooner Festival/Labor Day weekend fireworks will be cancelled. Gail McCarthy, senior staff writer for the Gloucester Times, reports that Barry Pett, who heads the Gloucester Fund and has organized Gloucester’s fireworks shows for the past 25 years, shares that there is only $4,000.00 in the kitty when approximately $12,500.00 is needed. Insurance costs alone are $1,000.

I think we can do this! I just made my donation on the Gloucester Fund’s website FIREWORKS page here. You can donate with all the usual credit cards as well as through PayPal. Or send a check to the following address with the memo “Fireworks”

Pick #2: St. Anthony’s Feast in Boston’s North End

CLICK HERE FOR ALL IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Each year the people of the North End invite you to celebrate with them as they honor their patrons Saint Anthony and Saint Lucy with colorful parades, religious services, strolling singers, live entertainment and of course an abundance of great Italian and American food.

Begun in 1919, by Italian immigrants from the small town of Montefalcione in Avellino, Saint Anthony’s Feast has become the largest Italian Religious Festival in New England. Named the “Feast of all Feasts” by National Geographic Magazine, this authentic Italian street festival has it all for people of every age: parades, strolling singers, live entertainment, contests and religious services are held daily.

Visitors stroll the beautifully decorated streets sampling the best Italian street foods from 100 pushcarts enjoying arancini, sausage peppers & onion, quahogs, calamari, pizza, pasta and of course zeppole, cannoli and gelato. Guests can also browse the wide selection of souvenir keepsakes and mementos.

The highlight of the Feast is the ten hour procession of the Statue of Saint Anthony through the streets of the North End accompanied by devotees, numerous marching bands and floats. The Statue of the Saint returns to his chapel as confetti and streamers cascade from the rooftops.

Other events include: The Filippo Berio Culinary Pavilion featuring cooking demonstrations and sampling from the North End and Boston’s most fabulous restaurant, an annual Open Air Mass in honor of Saint Anthony, including the veneration and individual blessing of the Relic of Saint Anthony and the distribution of blessed Saint Anthony Bread.

The magazine of Italian Food Wine & Culture said Saint Anthony’s Feast is “a spectacle not to be missed!” Saint Anthony’s Feast is held annually on the weekend of the last Sunday of August.

Pick #3: Go Fly a Kite

We have, all of a sudden, been doing a ton of this.  I can’t lie, it is not always my favorite activity what with the tangling, tearing, and untying of knots, but when/if it goes smoothly, it has been so much fun.  Gloucester and Rockport have been hopping lately with music festivals, fireworks, a sidewalk bizarre, block parties, the waterfront festival, a large fishing tournament….and, of course, the upcoming Schooner Festival.  This weekend looks like it could be a quiet weekend to catch up on simple activities like reading, bike riding, unwinding, fishing, and…kite flying.  Give it a try if it has been a while.

About the Grace Center
In the winter of 2009, the Cape Ann Clergy Association recognized an increasing number of requests for help from low-income and homeless adults. A Needs Assessment Study identified a number of pressing needs including the absence of a safe day space for the homeless in Gloucester. On December 22, 2011, the Grace Center, Inc. opened as a day resource center with professional staff and volunteers. To date we have served over 700 individuals.  http://gracecenterinc.org/
