Pick #1: Maple Sugaring at Ipswich River Wildlife Sanctuary
Saturday, February 25 & Sunday, February 26
Tours at 12:30 pm and 2:30 pm
Adults: $10 and children over 3: $8
Spring celebrations begin early at the sanctuary with the age-old tradition of maple sugaring. The warm days of late winter awaken the flow of sap in the maples, causing buds to swell and resulting in sweet-smelling, billowing clouds of steam rising from the sugarhouse.
On our naturalist-guided tours, learn how to identify a sugar maple, observe tapping and sap collection methods, watch the sap being boiled down in the sugarhouse, and get a sweet taste of the final product. Afterwards, warm up by the woodstove in the Barn, where hot beverages, hot dogs cooked in maple sap, and delicious soups and desserts made by our volunteers are available for purchase.
Visit our gift shop to browse a selection of maple products, and be sure to bring home a bottle of our own freshly-made maple syrup.
Tours last about an hour and run in all weather. Dress warmly and wear warm waterproof boots because the walk is entirely outdoors.

This past December brought one of my biggest life changes. After 5 generations of my family owning and operating Bass Rocks Ocean Inn, we decided to sell. As much as we have loved being apart of Bass Rocks, seeing how happy we have made our guests, the relationships we have made- we needed our family to be closer together (some of us in Florida and some in Massachusetts). We found a resort in Little Torch Key, Florida- Parmer’s Resort. We purchased Parmer’s in January, seeing the unspoken beauty and potential of the resort. Being here for only a month, we can’t wait to make this resort as special as we were able to make Bass Rocks for so many others. Although we have started a new venture, we will never forget our family at Bass Rocks Ocean Inn and appreciate all the memories that were created there. For me, it will always be my first home.

Baltimore’s harbor is cleaner than it has been in decades thanks to two anthropomorphic trash wheels pulling debris from its waters.
Mr. Trash Wheel and Professor Trash Wheel, the latter of which was installed in December, are solar- and hydro-powered trash interceptors based in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, clearing debris before it enters the Chesapeake Bay. Over a million pounds of trash has been pulled out of the water by Mr. Trash Wheel since it was installed in May 2014.
The trash wheel’s creator, John Kellett, worked on the harbor for years and saw garbage floating on the water every day. A sailor and engineer, he approached the city and offered to take a stab at cleaning up the harbor. He built a pilot trash wheel and installed it in 2008.
No one had ever tried to stop the trash before and the task seemed daunting. Kellett quickly realized he’d have to go bigger. The pilot wheel was often unable to pick up larger debris and had only one Dumpster, so when it was being emptied, the wheel had to wait for it to return before working again.

Dr. Way’s second book details his experience at Yellowstone National Park, where he takes regular trips to study coyotes.

John Ronan: Poetry Reading & Book Talk

Gloucester’s former poet laureate John Ronan will read from his most recent book, Taking the Train of Singularity South from Midtown (Backwaters Press, 2017) and discuss its connections to Gloucester, including “Good Harbor, Home,” which was written for and read at John Bell’s first inauguration as Mayor of Gloucester. Through Taking the Train of Singularity South from Midtown Ronan hopes to convey that love and language create community.

BREAKING: UPDATE ON PAPRIKA GRILL ARMED ROBBERY

A masked man with a knife made off with an estimated $300 or more in cash from the Paprika Grill on Washington Street on Monday night.
Police were continuing to seek the alleged robber as of Tuesday afternoon.
Emrah Arslan, owner and chef at Paprika, which opened in December at 185 Washington St., said he and his girlfriend Helena Lu were working at the Turkish cuisine eatery around 8 p.m. Monday when a man wearing a ski mask came in the front door and confronted Lu.
“At first, he said ‘Give me the money,’ but then he showed me the knife and I said ‘OK, take the money,'” Arslan continued.
“He kept (jabbing forward) with the knife,” Arslan continued, “then he went through the cash drawer, took the money and escaped. It all happened fast.”
Gloucester police responded to Arslan’s call at 8:04, the police log shows, and recovered the robber’s mask and knife within the nearby Oak Grove Cemetery, Arslan said. The police log, which lists the robbery as “under investigation,” notes that detectives followed up with a return to Washington Street at 9:45 p.m.

CONGRATULATIONS AND EXCITING NEWS FOR OUR COMMUNITY: STATE REPRESENTATIVE ANN MARGARET FERRANTE APPOINTED TO HOUSE LEADERSHIP
Representative Ann-Margaret Ferrante (D-Gloucester) has been nominated by Speaker of the House Robert A. DeLeo (D-Winthrop) and affirmed by a vote of her colleagues to be the First Division Chair of the House of Representatives for the 190th Massachusetts General Court. She had previously served as the House Chair for the Joint Committee on Community Development and Small Businesses.
Ferrante’s new position as a Division Chair carries the responsibility of serving as a mentor and leader for representatives in her division, about a quarter of the Democrats in the House of Representatives. Ferrante will also be one of nine Democrats who meet with the Speaker on a weekly basis to discuss House policy and legislation.
“I’m honored to be a part of Speaker DeLeo’s leadership team,” said Ferrante. “Under the Republican leadership of Trump, McConnell, and Ryan, I expect the Federal government to send more decisions about policy and budgeting items back to the states, making our roles as state representatives all the more important. I’m humbled to have been given this responsibility and opportunity to help chart the legislative course of the Commonwealth and I remain dedicated to making sure Cape Ann has a strong voice at the table so that our communities get their fair share.”
“Representative Ferrante is an exceptional coalition builder who approaches her work with great respect for her colleagues and recognizes the importance of bringing diverse voices to the table,” said House Speaker Robert A. In addition to her role as First Division Chair, Ferrante has been appointed to serve on the House Rules Committee and the House Steering, Policy and Scheduling Committee, as well as continuing to serve as the House Chair of the Tech Hub Caucus, a gathering of technology business leaders and legislative leaders. Ferrante’s co-chair is Senate Ways and Means Chair Karen Spilka.
“Ann-Margaret is passionate about her communities beyond her elected office,” said John Bell, former Mayor of Gloucester and community activist. “From the establishment of cultural districts in Essex, Gloucester, and Rockport to the opening of Gloucester Biotechnology Academy and Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute, Representative Ferrante is there to make sure that state dollars and legislative support come to Cape Ann to bring new projects forward. I can only imagine in her new position as a leader in the House, Representative Ferrante will remain a steadfast defender of our fishing industry while bringing innovation to Cape Ann.”
Prior to serving as the House Chair for the Joint Committee on Community Development and Small Businesses, Ferrante had also previously served as the House Vice Chair of the Joint Committee Economic Development and Emerging Technology, the House Vice Chair of the Committee on Environmental Resources and Agriculture, and as a member of the Ways and Means Committee.
