My View of Life on the Dock

Can we all agree that there are just a lot of dogs in Gloucester? I’m not really a “dog person”, but even I have to admit it’s hard to resist a friendly dog (unless it is pooping on the beach or some-such). It truly is a Dog Town. So much effort and energy is placed on their very existence around town. They are everywhere, and yet I hardly ever hear continued barking. They have made their presence known in the very fiber of the popular history of Gloucester.
You have Dogtown. We have a lot of cows in my hometown, but there is no area with the specific designation Cowtown! You have Harry Chapin singing about it: Yes, it’s a Dogtown and it’s a fog town, And there’s nothing around ‘cept the sea pounding granite ground.
So, as a homage: here are some pictures from Dogtown in the fall and some pictures of Dog Town in the fall.
Hey, I think they match up! Maybe there’s something to this whole dog thing after all.

Dreamtime Wellnesses™ is ‘Giving Back’ to Veterans throughout the month of November.
A Chance Meeting With a Word War II Veteran – A couple of days ago, I rode the elevator at the medical building where I have an office. A man riding the elevator with me mentioned, “I don’t care much for elevators.” Since I work with people in my professional practice to help them overcome fear including ‘fear of elevators,’ his mentioning this led to a conversation we may not otherwise have had.
Turned out Jack, (not his real name) is also afraid of other closed-in spaces, crowds, and fireworks that he related began while on active duty. I asked ‘Which war did you serve in?’ and was shocked to hear “World War 2.” He looked much younger than his stated age of “92.”

Each autumn the members of the Annisquam Sewing Circle gather to prepare for the Annual Christmas Fair, well known for its fabulous one-of-a-kind wreaths and center pieces as well as decorated boxwood trees. Also one will find beautiful bulbs and potted plants ready to give or take home, delicious homemade gourmet food items and handcrafted gift items.
The Annual Christmas Fair & Luncheon and the Annual Plant and Gourmet Food Sale raise funds to support scholarships for graduating seniors who are going on to college, training for a trade or other educational opportunities and community projects on Cape Ann, for example: The Open Door Food Pantry, Backyard Growers, Cape Ann Animal Aid, Pathways for Children.
The Annisquam Sewing Circle was begun in 1837 as the Annisquam Female Benevolent Society. It is thought to be the oldest continuous independent society of women on Cape Ann.
The Society’s purpose as stated in its Preamble, was “for the performance of acts of benevolence.” Through the years, the Society, and now the Circle, has contributed generously to community programs and to individuals.

For now, PASS!
On Friday November 10, 2017, Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healy responded to Judge Agostini’s November 7th decision greenlighting Sotheby’s sale. The Massaschusetts AGO appeal reversed the decision, ultimately procuring an injunction from Judge Trainor, Massachusetts Appeals Court. This 11th hour move will not be the last word on the case, though it scuttles any scheduled sale prior to December 11 (with allowances for extensions to build the case.)
Meanwhile, on Monday, November 13, 2017, collectors can purchase Martin Johnson Heade’s Crimson Topaz Hummingbirds and 76 major American paintings at Sotheby’s. The Sotheby’s sale originally featured 84 lots. Norman Rockwell’s Shuffleton’s Barbershop, and 6 more of the Berkshire Museum 40, will not be sold, yet.
