Breaks out Shovel !
The shovel was handed to “Ed’ as he was being pushed out the door,
he was told to make Gloucester proud…
He set off… Steely eyed into the storm…
Made his first pass on the boulevard…
The shovel broke.
He said “f – – k it !… tossed it into the ocean and went home.
Gloucester sleeps peacefully .

The same day that brought this season’s first snowfall also brought Cape Ann’s 1st Annual Veterans Army vs. Navy Flag Football game. I am so excited for this to become an annual event! Congratulations to all who braved the elements to play hard and have fun. Much thanks to the organizers and volunteers as well!
And, for those of you who are interested in keeping track year after year from here on out, Saturday’s game ended 14 -12 with a win for Navy.

We’ve been heading up and down the Essex Coastal Scenic Byway more than usual to support the woman based businesses along the way. It’s been a great deal of fun as there are many interesting establishments along the Byway. A field of poinsettias in an Ipswich greenhouse caught my eye recently so we stopped at Gordon Florist to take a gander.

We met Peter Gordon, a co-owner who gave us some information and a tour of the various greenhouses. Gordon Florist has been in business for 5 generations since 1922 and Pete explained to us that the greenhouses are the old fashioned glass style complete with vintage pulley and chain systems. These greenhouses have withstood many storms over the years; in fact the “NewHouse” is so named because it ‘only’ dates to the 1950s. These pictures were taken in the “Carnation House”.
Gordon’s seems to specialize in providing the materials you might need if you want to create your own holiday decorations using live plants. I saw birch branches, pine boughs, wreaths without decoration and other such DIY seasonal building blocks. In addition, there are plenty of wreaths, kissing balls and trees for people like me who need someone else’s creativity and talent.
Thanks to Pete for taking the time to talk with us and give us a tour! If you’re driving up the Byway, you should stop at Gordons!

Last weekend teachers from Rockport and Gloucester Public Schools sacrificed their weekend so they could inquire about their own relationships to health and wellness, as to better understand how they can serve the youth they work with. There were also nurses, coaches, and other leaders who work with youth all across Massachusetts and one participant even traveled from Virginia.
My hat is off to all of them. We’re blessed to have people like these teaching our kids.
Cape Ann Power Yoga is grateful to our teachers and our community for making it possible for us to host this type of empowering training in conjunction with the Baptiste Foundation! The two day training was free for people who work with youth to help them bring the techniques we practice on the mat into the classroom.

“There is a great need for veterans and the families of veterans to tell their own stories to audiences who are receptive and willing to listen.” Dorothy Nelson, from the book’s introduction.
Today’s book launch of The Inner Voice and the Outer World was a resounding success. The book is a compilation of writings by veterans and their families from the Gloucester Writer’s Center “Cape Ann Veterans Writing Workshop” (2013 -2017), which was taught by the book’s editor, Dorothy Nelson. Many of the contributors were at the event to read excerpts of their poems and stories and to sign books. Shaped by the author’s experiences in 20th and 21st century wars, the stories shared were deeply moving. Readers and audience were in many instances moved to tears.
The Gloucester House was packed, so much so, that Lenny opened up the adjoining second function room to accommodate the overflow of people.
Best wishes and congratulations to the Writer’s Center, Ms. Nelson, and the contributors for sharing the stories of our local veterans and their loved ones.

No, I’m not kidding. On Thursday, the FCC will most likely vote to repeal Net Neutrality, the rule that prevents Internet Service Providers (ISPs) like Comcast, Verizon and AT&T from slowing down (a.k.a. throttling) or blocking websites and streaming services. This means Comcast will be allowed to block your access to GMG for any reason they like. And they could charge GMG a fee in order to have the block removed. You and Joey and I will have no recourse.
But it gets worse. If you have a small business, Comcast could also block your website and force you to pay a premium to get the block removed. The technology exists for Comcast to block your Facebook page if they like and Facebook will have no recourse to prevent that.
As you might guess, there are those who favor repealing Net Neutrality, namely people at Comcast, AT&T and Verizon. FCC Chairman, Ajit Pai, who proposed the repeal, is the former Associate General Council for Verizon where he handled competition matters, regulatory issues, and counseling of business units on broadband initiatives. Perhaps now you’re getting the picture.
Ajit Pai has called Net Neutrality “a solution in search of a problem” which conveniently ignores the many times ISPs did exactly what we’re afraid of until the FCC came to our rescue. See examples here. Once Net Neutrality is repealed, the FCC will no longer be able to come to our rescue.
Imagine if the phone company decided to block calls to your mother in Iowa because whatever phone company she uses out there doesn’t want to pay a premium to allow calls from Massachusetts.
“That sort of thing has never happend,” you might say. And you’d be right. Because phone companies aren’t allowed to block calls or redirect them or add static or interfere with the sound or video quality — all things that ISPs will be allowed to do without the Net Neutrality rules. But wait! Do you have VOIP from Comcast? Or Verizon? Or AT&T? Better call your mom now and explain why you might not be able to call her after Thursday.
And while you’re at it, you might want to call your congressman Seth Moulton (202) 225-8020 and Senators Ed Markey 617-565-8519 and Elizabeth Warren (617) 565-3170. Ask them to pressure the FCC not to repeal Net Neutrality. And if that doesn’t work, perhaps congress can make Net Neutrality the law of the land.
This is serious folks. The time to act is now.
Ladies day at Pauline’s Gift, looks like a good time

There were so many surfers and paddleboarders out on the water at Good Harbor Beach the other day that it looked like a gathering of ducks. I guess they aren’t that much different in some ways. Floating out there waiting for the perfect food or wave. Rising and sinking with the waves.

It sure looked like fun! One of these days, you’ll see me out there!
