I have noticed that Gloucester displays its patriotism proudly by flying the flag all over the city.  Kudos to all as they are just beautiful.  This one is at the Park at Fort Point.

2018 Essex Heritage Partnership Grant opportunity is now open

Essex National Heritage Commission preserves and promotes the historic, cultural and natural resources of Essex County, MA. The organization’s annual partnership grants have primed several projects in Gloucester and throughout Cape Ann. REGISTER by February 16, 2018 for the latest round of Essex Heritage Partnership grants: twelve $2000 awards will be granted.

How to Apply

  • Log In or Register  to apply online. Applications will be accepted ONLINE ONLY.
  • Applications are due no later than Monday, February 16, 2018 by 11:59 PM
  • Read the 2018 Partnership Grant Program Description (pdf)

2018 Fermentation Workshop

Join Backyard Growers as we partner with Pigeon Cove Ferments at our two-part fermentation workshop learning all about the benefits of fermentation!

Part 1 will be held at Backyard Growers where we will learn more about lacto-fermentation and the benefits of incorporating fermented food into our diets. All ages welcome.

PLEASE NOTE: this workshop will be at Backyard Growers’ office: 271 Main St, Gloucester, MA 01930

Part 2 will be held at Pigeon Cove Ferments kitchen where participants are fully engaged in the sauerkraut making process and will leave with their own jar of homemade kraut. All ages welcome.

Driving on Rocky Neck the other day, these ducks caught my eye, finding the only space with water instead of ice.  Take a look at the name of the boat, The Endurance.  Very appropriate.

Edward Hopper at Oxford and T S Eliot at Turner Contemporary

Several European museum shows in 2018 contain examples or are devoted to American 20th century artists and modernism like the ones curated for the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford, the Royal Academy, Tate Modern and British Museum.

Massachusetts loans boast the Edward Hopper painting Manhattan Bridge Loop from the Addison Gallery of Art collection, Phillips Academy, Andover, selected for America’s Cool Modernism at Oxford. Three Hopper etchings (The Cat Boat, Night Shadows, and The Railroad) are on the checklist. Hopper depicted Gloucester in over 110 works of art. Besides Hopper, notable artists and writer with various Gloucester connections selected are: Stuart Davis, Marsden Hartley, e e cummings, and Louis Lozowick.

Upcoming at Turner Contemporary – “Journeys with ‘The Waste Land’   a major exhibition (Sat 3 Feb – Mon 7 May 2018) considering Eliot’s watershed poem through visal arts, and Margate. I hope they turn to Gloucester and Cape Ann, unspoken in the final poem yet approachable (and specified in excised iterations). From the museum’s press release:

“Presenting artworks from the 19th century to the present, including film, photography and artefacts, the exhibition explores how contemporary and historical art can enable us to reflect on the T. S. Eliot poem, The Waste Land, and its shifting flow of diverse voices, references, characters and places.

Mayor Sefatia’s inaugural celebration, held at Tonno Restaurant, was attended by a gathering of friends and supporters, including Massachusetts’s beloved Governor Charlie Baker and State Senator Bruce Tarr. Guests enjoyed the beautiful spread prepared by Chef Anthony Caturano, with wonderfully delicious desserts from Caffe Sicilia, and everyone wanted to have a photo taken with Governor Baker, which he kindly obliged. Simple gestures…

Yesterday while hibernating with a cold at home for New Years Day we ordered in chinese from Jasmine Garden and the sweetest lady with the nicest smile, came to deliver in the frigid temps and handed us these awesome little chinese ornaments with our order.   It’s these simple gestures that we don’t see much anymore.   So thank you Jasmine Garden for making us all smile!
