We were driving down Nugent Stretch, from Rockport to Gloucester, yesterday at 10:45 in the morning when Finn swore that he saw a coyote on the side of the road. He made me turn around to prove that he was right….and I was glad that I did. There, rolling around like a puppy in the grass on the lawn of the Sea Lion hotel, was a lone coyote. I drove past him, turned around again, and pulled over safely to take some photos. Yet again only equipped with my iPhone, I sadly couldn’t get great shots, but he was super close and didn’t mind me snapping photos for a little bit before he got up and trotted away to the house next door up on the hill.

Gloucester is blessed with sweeping vistas of natural beauty but sometimes it’s worth the time to take a closer look at the pieces that make up these grand views.

Especially during the holiday gift giving season, you may find in your inbox some pretty slick looking scams. This last one came from “AS – Amazon Support” after a recent order was placed, claiming my payment method had been declined. AS is also the initials of the scammer, Andre Shamido, who wanted an updated payment method provided.
It didn’t come through when I converted the following scam email to a jpg, but the scammers “Update your payment method” was displayed within a gold-colored box, similar to the gold Amazon uses to highlight ordering information when Amazon wants you to click on a link.
Amazon will never send an unsolicited e-mail that asks you to provide sensitive information.

117,962,797 views (I started the feed stats a couple seeks after the blog was launched. The blog was launched December 17, 2007. The feed stats service was enabled January 19th, 2008).
Brick by brick. From the first month when we reached 100 views per day ad was excited, then 1000 a day after a year or so of putting the link to the blog in front of as many people I could, then adding great people as contributors, 5000, 10,0000, 20,000 four years in, 30,000 and now where we are now averaging around 45,000 views per day based in a city of 30,000. What a gift it’s been to all of us. Mainly the friendships. You could take it all away and those friendships are the most valuable to me. We’ve been through a lot. We’ve lost loved ones, we’ve garnered national attention, won a ton of awards, fought the good fight, but at the end of the day it’s the people- the friendships, the love shared and the passion for highlighting the best our city has to offer. It’s the people. It’s you guys. It’s the community.
Here’s to another 10 years of passionate community love and collaboration.

The Niles Pond Young Swan, rescued by Lyn Fonzo and Dan Harris on Friday, was taken to SeaPort Veterinary Hospital Saturday morning for a wellness checkup and because it is thought she may have contracted round worm at the shelter from where she originated. Dr. Cahill gave her a complete physical, checking on wings, feet, degree of fat on her bones, took an xray, and drew blood for a blood work up. His assistant also plucked a few feathers to send off to a lab to determine the sex of the young Mute Swan. It will take several weeks for the results of the tests, but based on Dr. Cahill’s visual assessment, she appears to be in excellent health!!
Swans can become very defensive when they feel threatened however, the Young Swan has a relatively speaking mild temperament. Lyn and Dan handled her with lots of tender care and caution and no one was bit during during transport and during the exam.
While we were at the vets, Joel Murnroe, one of Mr. Swan’s loyal caregivers and a fine carpenter, was back at Lyn’s home modifying Lyn’s chicken coop, with a larger entryway door and swan-sized rebuilt ramp.
The Young Swan has had an eventful and productive first day in captivity. With much gratitude and thanks to Lyn for taking on the tremendous responsibility of caring for a wild swan for the winter. Our hope is that the Young Swan is a she, and that she will be re-released to Niles Pond this coming spring.
