Stephen LaPierre, an oil painter, is currently a member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester, MA.  LaPierre’s dayscapes and nightscapes follow  the tradition of ashcan school artists,  John Sloan, Everette Shinn and Edward Hopper.  Meanwhile, LaPierre, a Haverhill, MA native, always  adds his personal “colorificus” to each piece he creates, which he likes to call “approximationism“.

Sunday Morning Rocky Neck Oil Painting with Stephen LaPierre throughout July, beginning July 8th on Rocky Neck in East Gloucester 7AM-9:30 AM Learn to paint from life. Classes will be held outdoors…except on rainy Sundays when classes held in Stephen’s studio at 75 Rocky Neck Ave 2nd floor… auditors welcome  Free tuition…but students need to bring an 11″ x 14″ min size canvas (canvas or linen) a field or French easel with palette, small cup,turpentine, drinking water ,small mirror, paper towels or rags, specific brushes and tones.

Gloucester Meetinghouse Summer Concert
Stacia Kraft will be performing with her band at the second free Gloucester Meetinghouse Summer Concert Series concert July 13, 6 – 9 pm, at the corner of Church and Middle Street.
 Stacia Kraft sings the American Songbook with classic style; a big alto sound with an honest approach to the lyrics.
 Her program will feature jazz standards, folk songs, Broadway tunes, and spirituals with a superb group of swinging musicians: Tony Malionek – piano, Jon Dreyer-bass, Tom Duprey – trumpet, Miki Matsuki-drums. Trained at the New England Conservatory, Kraft brings emotion and sensuality to each song. You are sure to have a romantic evening of song under the stars, and leave wanting more.Â
 The concert is free. In the spirit of giving to the community, concert-goers are encouraged to make free-will donations to Backyard Growers, which provides support to establish vegetable gardens at homes, housing communities, organizations, and schools.
Bring cash or a checkbook, beach chairs or blankets. Food is provided by Crepes du Jour. In case of rain the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse. Parking is available in lots nearby and at St Peter’s Square.

George Nick is a nationally recognized realist painter based in Boston. Blurring the line between realism and expressionism, Nick has described his painting style as intuitive and inventive. What we see between the frames is not a moment frozen in time, but a collection of moments that unify in our mind’s eye. Nick’s paintings are complicated, he is constantly running in circles, following ideas that lead to moments of clarification which, in turn, give birth to a new set of problems and intangible thoughts waiting to be chased down and painted. Nick taught painting at Massachusetts College of Art and Design for twenty-five years. His work is included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; the Hirschhorn Museum; and the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., as well as many others.
The varied subjects in George Nick’s paintings – ranging from vintage automobiles to Back Bay street scenes, from Venetian waterways to Maine landscapes – reflect his appetite for experimentation. “I’m always reaching out for left-field ideas and approaches, trying to understand what I can do and what I can’t do,” says Nick. This freshness is reflected in Nick’s paint handling, which, always lively and luscious, veers from crisply detailed strokes to broad swaths of color, sometimes within the same piece.
In his 2004 essay on the painting of George Nick, John Stomberg, the Deputy Director of the Williams College Museum of Art, coined the term “existential realism” to describe the particular arena in which Nick operates. Yes, he is a realist, a painter in love with the world and its appearances, and, yes, he is, like the first generation abstract expressionists who were his peers in the 1950s, a painter whose work is a document of his moment-by-moment encounter with the art of painting.
