HAWC (Healing Abuse, Working for Change) and Treetop Yoga are teaming up to offer a very special monthly workshop for survivors of abuse. All classes will be unique, as instructor Hilary Richard leads participants in meditation, breathwork, and gentle yoga postures with the intention of releasing trauma and finding empowerment. Shaina Doberman from HAWC will be available before and after class for anyone needing one on one support; there will be no group discussions during these events.
These workshops are intended for those who have experienced domestic abuse and/or sexual assault; no prior yoga experience is necessary. Classes are free to survivors of all genders who register through HAWC; drop-in participants welcome with a suggested donation of $5 (cash only). No class in December. Dates for January, February, and March TBD.

Trick or treat!!!!
Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute Class of 2019
Founders, supporters, and elected officials came together today to celebrate the expansion of the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute. The institute’s new facility is located at 417 Rogers Street on Gloucester’s inner harbor. GMGI is the world’s first dedicated marine genomics institute and is designed to advance marine biology research and to expand the local economy. The construction of the world-class genomics research institute was made possible by a $2.7 million capital grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC) to help build and equip the 6,000 square-foot research institute and lab. Today was truly a historic day for Gloucester and you can see by the smiles of joy on everyone’s faces how meaningful is this expansion to Gloucester’s working waterfront.
Sherre Zizak was, for the second time this month, presented with the Unsung Hero Award, this one given by the City of Gloucester and the office of Mayor Sefatia.
Friends and supporters of GMGI received thanks today for their role in the expansion and they include the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center, Governor Baker, Representative Ann Margaret Ferrante, State Senator Bruce Tarr, Mayor Romeo-Theken, Sherre Zizik, Lee Dellicker, Joe Rosa, John Bell, Marc Vidal, David Walt, Greg Verdine, Jonathan Pope, Michelle May, James Bacon, John Connolly, JC Guiterrez-Ramos, Bill Kane, George Putnam, Tom Simons, and many more.

Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute was founded in 2013 by three entrepreneurial scientists with legendary experience in genomics and biomedicine — David Walt, Greg Verdine, and Marc Vidal — along with local businesswoman Sheree Zizik. After the clouds started to clear the sunset was very interesting and stunning.
Cape Ann participated in the Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC) statewide cultural district convening which was hosted by the Natick Center for the Arts. Statewide district gatherings occur once or twice a year: the last two were held in Cambridge, and Beverly. Representatives from Gloucester, Rockport and Essex cultural districts were in attendance. (Manchester and Ipswich do not not have a designation at this time. Gloucester could have seven.)
Massachusetts Cultural Council Director, Anita Walker, welcomed the crowd, and introduced officials from Natick and new additions to the MCC staff. Jill Cahill, Gloucester’s Director of Community Development, brought a gift from the Mayor and the City to add to a send-off of thanks and well wishes for Meri Jenkins, longtime MCC leader who managed cities and towns through cultural facilities funding and district designations. Luis Edgardo Cotto and Justina Crawford will be taking over the MCC Community Initiative programs managed by Meri.
The MCC approved five year district renewals for both Rocky Neck and Rockport last year. District renewal for Gloucester’s downtown is underway. Essex received official citations for their renewal at this convening. Here’s a photo of Christopher Stepler, artist and Manager of Essex Shipbuilding Museum, and Lee Spence, former Director. One update they shared was that the successful historic exhibition The Women of Essex – Stories to Share displayed at Essex Town Hall in a renovated bright space on the top floor above the TOHP Burnham Public Library (thanks in part to Cultural Facilities funding) was selected to travel to the NPS regional Visitor Center in Salem.
