Thatch’s team fell a little bit short of the Championship today, but this video makes me smile (for a few different reasons). This is Don. Don is also known as “AdventureDAD”…..father to Jamie McDonald… Adventureman. Many members of this team ran the very last little bit of Jamie’s truly unbelievable 210-marathon/5,500 mile solo run from Washington State to Gloucester alongside him and were there at the finish line in their CAYH shirts this past Wednesday. When Don heard that they had a championship game three days later, he told them that he was going to be there to cheer them on….because they were there to cheer on his son.
Wouldn’t you know that this morning he reached out to coordinate how to make it happen…even though he was due to fly back to England shortly after the game.
This is a dad who supported his son through some scary younger years when Jamie was afflicted with a rare disease that stole him of his mobility. This is a dad who supported his son when, thank goodness, he fought and prevailed and decided to then dedicate himself to raising money for sick children. This is a dad who has since supported his son during some absolutely monumental adventures….. including the upcoming 7 day straight, world record breaking, treadmill run. And this is a dad who is a man of his word who also wanted to cheer on and support this team…our sons and daughter.
I’m so glad the team had a chance to hear from him (and his bloody brilliant accent)….even if they don’t fully get why it is so cool that he took the time.

Our red finch couple couldn’t wait for us to put out a hanging plant for their nest this year, so they decided to use our Paolo Soleri bell on the deck. In the photos, the male is on top of the bell, and the female is going inside building the nest on the clapper. We’ll keep watch.

This juvenile Red-tailed hawk was perched in a tree on the roadside running along the Great Salt Marsh. She was hunting a squirrel that was half hidden in the leaf litter below. This is the second time in the past several weeks that we’ve seen a Red-tailed Hawk hunting and eating a squirrel. The first was in our neighbor’s yard, perched on the stone wall, eating a Gray Squirrel. The Red-tailed flew overhead with the squirrel in its beak and landed on the lattice of our outdoor shower enclosure. My husband stood beneath the shower ceiling and watched for a bit as the hawk finished off his meal.
The Red-tailed Hawk’s diet is highly variable, consisting of small mammals including voles, mice, rats, rabbits, and squirrels; other birds including bobwhite, starlings, blackbirds, ducks, and pheasant; reptiles such as snakes and frogs; fish; insects; bats; and carrion. They are colloquially called “chickenhawks” however, they rarely take a standard-sized chicken.
The Red-tailed Hawk is the most common bird of prey found in North America. We saw several in Mexico on our trip to Cerro Pelon in early March. They are found from the interior of Alaska and northern Canada to as far south as the West Indies and Panama.
On Sunday morning the ocean was singing a tune and the rough seas made for a beautiful view.
Over six weeks I’m posting local history trivia questions from Shaun Goulart’s creative weekly scavenger project for his 9th grade history class at Gloucester High School– except we’ll be one week behind the students’ pace. He explains that the “questions are multi-layered and usually have an image required in the submission. All questions will deal with Gloucester’s local history. You can tell it’s spring when the gig rowers and volunteers have flocked to Maritime Gloucester to get their boats back in the water.
From our friend Mary Barker. She was down at Maritime Gloucester yesterday morning as the Gannet was being lowered into the water.
Clambers on the salt marsh had plenty of gull spectators.
I could have eaten like crap all week and then have one order of Sandpiper Bakery Avocado Toast and I’ll be strutting around like I’m Jack Lalane.

Though Dog Bar and Landing are closed, you can find Michael O’Leary and friends on alternate Sundays at Jalapenos (only in America!) brought together by their love of traditional music beautifully played, sung and felt. They were at the Farm on St Patrick’s Day, and Lannon music sails.
