Nichole’s Picks 5/18 + 5/19

With any luck the sun will come out and we can enjoy some of the outdoor, spring activities that we have all been anxiously awaiting to participate in.  In addition to enjoying spring weather, there are some fun events going on as well.

Pick #1: Rockport’s Motif No. 1 Day

MAY 18, 2019 FROM 9AM TO 5PM

Motif No. 1 Day focuses on honoring Rockport’s heritage and future in the arts.

The Motif No.1 Day Festival celebrates Rockport. Poetry, dance, art, live music, interactive art, a 5k & Fun Run, local food (wood-fired pizza, grass-fed burgers and more!), small-batch craft beer and Massachusetts wine — all of it in honor of the red fishing shack that is known around the world as Motif No.1.

Pick #2: Birds, Bees & Butterflies

Families can head to the Cox Reservation in Essex for some kid-friendly fun between the hours of 10:00-1:00.  The expansive views and and natural beauty of the Cox Reservation make it a good pick any day, but even more so when they are hosting one of their many great events.  We’ve found a couple geocaching boxes there as well.

Pick #3:  Operation: Safe + Boat

This event was such a great time last year and our city’s first responders are looking forward to a large turnout again this year.  Bring the whole family down to Harbor Loop in Gloucester (near Maritime Gloucester, the Building Center, and the Gloucester Coast Guard Station).  There will be several family friendly and important activities going on!

Thank you to the volunteers and, as always, to our First Responders for all that you do.

Pick #4:  Rockport’s EMS Day

Likewise, this is always a fun event for families with young children.  Take the opportunity to get up close to fire engines, rescue vehicles, police boats, and more!

Also take this opportunity to thank those who are always there to take care of us!

This event takes place right on Rockport’s T-Wharf from 11:00-3:00.  Take some time to shop locally and grab a bite to eat with the family afterwards.

One of the Ones Midas Touched

One of the ones Midas touched,

Who failed to touch us all,

Was that confiding prodigal,

The blissful oriole.

Emily Dickinson’s words seem very appropriate for these backyard orioles. I am so happy to see them….for me, this is a real treat….like an orange for an oriole. I will wait patiently for the male to sit still long enough for his photo shoot.

Joey Ciaramitaro's avatarNortheast BBQ

She has good bones although she’s filthy. I’ve cleaned far worse Weber Kettles into things of beauty. I can get this one pretty nice as well.

The grill grates are roached. The drip pan needs replacing. The burners look OK. The flavorizor bars are iffy. The wood is in decent shape, need sanding and stain. The frame is solid.

With all the TLC he is recieving, their is hope for recovery 🙂 Thank you Erin and Jodi for all you do for Cape Ann’s orphaned and injured wildlife.

If you would like to help Cape Ann Wildlife with much needed supplies, here is a link to their Amazon wishlist. Thank you!

Notice the scales in the photos, the owlet has already gained weight!

Questions for Sawyer Free Library building plans remain unanswered, yet trustees “should vote” TODAY whether it’s a teardown, reno, or …

Public meetings –

Today Wednesday, May 15th, 2019

4PM

The Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Public Library Building Committee will compare roughly estimated costs of one addition/renovation concept design for the Monell wing with the estimated costs of  a tear-down/new build of the Monell wing, after which the Board of Trustees “should vote” on their recommendation for which option to pursue. The plans are roughly the same as ones presented January 2017. Saunders is not a smidgen of this 21+ million quote. I’d link to any and all minutes and plans, but they have not been published on the library’s website (as they have been with other MBLC projects), distributed to the corporators (I am one),  nor released as hand outs and printed matter. I was told “when it’s the right time” by the architectural firm.

  1. tear down Monell / construct new building (nothing for Saunders)
  2. vs renovate Monell and build addition (nothing for Saunders)
  3. vs other

May 20th Annual Meeting

The annual meeting comes after today’s vote. “The Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library annual meeting of the corporation will be Monday, May 20th, 6-8, Main Floor. The Reading (MA) Public Library Director will give the keynote address on Building Community, Building a Library followed by a presentation of the preferred concept design (voted today), closing with remarks of the president of the board on the future plans for the library.”

http://www.engageyourworld.org/engage/summer-program/

Harborlight welcomes students from 4 months to 14 years to explore their world. Harborlight provides a  safe, caring, vibrant community where independence, cooperation, and exploration are encouraged.

During the Summer Program,  for older students, the adventures in learning allow them to discover something unknown about the world around them and reveal something about themselves—engaging in cooperative hands-on activities, exploring the areas of arts, science, and engineering, invest in forming new friendships.

For our youngest students it is the daily, small, independent tasks that make each day an adventure in learning— discovering the magical space of the children’s gardens, or using their little hands to squeeze lemons for lemonade.

Summer Program is open to community and is licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care.

For children in Grades 1-7, there are eight individual week-long  programs that engage the students in hands-on learning opportunities with field trips and overnight opportunities, too.

This summer’s options for those students are:

MAD SCIENCE: Secret Agent Lab,  July 8-12

Percy Jackson’s Challenge, July 15-19

Ready Set Chef, July 22-26

Bike Week, July 29-August 2

Wilderness Explorers, August 5-9

I Survived, August 12-16

The Art of Summer, August 19-23

This summer, Children’s House and Kindergarten students can travel the world this summer with Harborlight’s  international travel curriculum, Passports!  Each student will get a “passport” and earn a stamp for every continent they visit, with different areas of the world highlighted every week.  Students will learn and have fun through engaging interdisciplinary projects, games and cooking activities.

In the month of  July, journey through North America, learning about the countries, customs, animals and landmarks in the United States and Canada.  Also, explore the largest continent in the world, Asia, learn to use chopsticks, speak and write in Chinese and participate in a mock “Chinese New Year parade”.  Next, go on a safari in Africa and learn about the African animals, customs and the majestic savanna.  Rounding out the month is an exploration of the language, culture and food of South America.

In August, explore the continent of Europe’s beautiful architecture, famous landmarks, rich culture and amazing food! Also, journey to the exciting continent of Australia, home of the Great Barrier Reef and tropical rainforests.   Finally, beat the heat of the summer and visit the coldest continent in the world: Antarctica. Learn now animals keep themselves warm and discover the unique features of this climate and land.

Minglewood Harborside

We decided to stop for dinner at the new Minglewood Harborside and check things out. As you have heard, a complete makeover of the inside was recently completed so we were curious. It was far too rainy and dreary to try the new outdoor seating so we had an inside table. The large bar area dominates the main room and it is something! Several people were seated at the bar watching the TVs and playing Trivia and having wings that were on special (Tuesday’s). There are outlets at the bar for customer convenience….how smart is that?

We ordered the Orange Chicken and Haddock Burrito which we enjoyed so much there were no leftovers.

And, as you see above, don’t forget your Serenitee card! (Have we mentioned the Serenitee card is free?) Thanks, Minglewood Harborside, we’ll be back soon to try the outdoor tables.
