GHS/O’Maley Fall Sport Registration -Complete ASAP
Good Afternoon,
This is a reminder to register for Gloucester High School and O’Maley Middle School Fall Sports ASAP. All student-athletes need to pre-register for their sports.
All Student-athletes must have the following completed prior to tryouts, or they will not be allowed to participate until finalized.
1. Register on FamilyID
2. Complete the Online Concussion Course, and save the completed certificate to your FamilyID registration.

*All student-athletes must complete the course for the 2019-20 school year. Certificates from 2018-19 are expired.
3. All athletes must have documentation of an up to date physical within the past 13 months. Best to download the physical exam paperwork on to your FamilyID registration.
*If you are a returning athlete, and registering on FamilyID, your past physical should automatically upload as long as you are using your same login values. If you create a different login, then any old information will not carry over.
4. Check payable to Gloucester High School Athletics for your user fee. Can be mailed to “GHS Athletics, 32 Leslie O. Johnson Rd, Gloucester, MA 01930”
All student-athletes must have past uniforms and user fees turned in to the Athletic Department, or student-athletes will be held out of their respective sport.
REMINDER: STUDENT-ATHLETES WILL BE WITHHELD FROM PARTICIPATION OF ACTIVITIES UNTIL EVERYTHING IS COMPLETED.
Important Fall Sports Dates:
There will be a mandatory parent/student-athlete meeting in early to mid August (time/date TBA). All student-athletes, and at least 1 parent/guardian, must attend this meeting. This meeting will be run by your sports Varsity Coach, so all must be in attendance.
Tuesday August 13th: Parents/Student-Athlete Meeting – 6pm in GHS field house. All athletes & at least 1 parent guardian must attend. This meeting is very important as the Head Coach of all sports will provide details on your preseason, regular season, and other sport specific program details.
Tuesday August 20th: Registration for Fall Sports Closes
Thursday August 22nd: All GHS Sports Tryouts/Practices Begin (O’Maley sports may be on 8/22 or closer to start of school year)

At this time, all GHS sports are open for 9th-12th graders to register. Decisions and waiver requests for middle schoolers, to play high school sports, are on a sport by sport basis once there is a good idea of registration status. If a GHS sport is opened up to 8th graders or 7th & 8th graders we will post that publicly and on FamilyID registration.

Music on Meetinghouse Green
SWING TO THE BEAT OF CAPE ANN BIG BAND
August 9 free concert on Meetinghouse Green
Cape Ann Big Band brings its diverse 17-piece band to delight Gloucester residents and visitors on Friday, August 9, at the sixth free concert at Meetinghouse Green, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM.
One of the most sought-after ensembles in the North Shore, this home-grown group works and plays together as a family. Their danceable musical repertoire, ‘with no boundaries’, includes classics such as ‘Mack the Knife’, ‘I’ve Got You Under My Skin’, and ‘Take the A Train’. You will be rocking in your seats, or dancing on the pathways and grass lawns of Meetinghouse Green, as you listen to the mesmerizing rhythms of jazz, swing, soul, rock n’ roll and New Orleans street bands.
Formed in 2010, Cape Ann Big Band director Carlos Menezes Jr. teamed up with fellow musicians and friends Paula Burns, Shawn Lowe, Mike Lentini, and Rick Geraghty, to discuss the potential of starting up a 17-piece big band. The dream became a reality when Menezes pulled together his band in just a week’s time. Cape Ann Big Band will pack a punch, that is sure to be a crowd-pleaser for both Gloucester residents and visitors.
Each week Music on Meetinghouse Green partners with a different non-profit organization to raise awareness for the services they provide to the local community. At the August 9 concert, the audience is invited to contribute a freewill donation to HAWC, a non-profit organization committed to ending the domestic violence epidemic. Jalapenos will provide fresh Mexican food for concert-goers.
The Gloucester Meetinghouse, home of the Unitarian Universalist Church, is located at the corner of Church and Middle Streets. The concert is handicapped accessible. Event parking is available on the green and at additional parking lots nearby in the Historic District. Folding chairs will be provided or bring your own beach chair. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse.

Obituary Val Babson
Sending heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Val Babson.
Mary “Val” Lavilla Cogswell Babson, 73, died July 30, 2019, peacefully at her home in Gloucester, MA, after years of enduring Alzheimer’s dementia. She died as she lived – full of grace, love, strength and beauty.
Born in Baltimore, MD, the day before Valentine’s Day, she was known to most as “Val” and to her grandchildren as “Tutu.”
Val adored her family and shared 47 loving years married to David E. Babson. They loved to travel but mostly enjoyed being at home together watching the tides come in and out of Lobster Cove. She always shared a vitality for life, a mischievous sense of humor, and boundless compassion and love for her many friends and family. We are all blessed to have her close to our hearts.
She graduated from the Friends School of Baltimore (1964), Wells College (1968), and Lesley University.
She was impassioned to improve the Gloucester Public Schools and contributed in a variety of roles by co-founding the Gloucester School Connection, helping to create the Multiple Intelligence Program, and working as the Public-Parent Information Director, Title I Liaison, and Community Outreach and Media Specialist.
She was an advocate for reading and building community, volunteering on the boards of the Annisquam Village Library and Sawyer Free Library, and always adding insight to her beloved book group. She got great joy from spending time in her beautiful garden and volunteered with the Garden Club of Gloucester. She also served on the board of the Gloucester Universalist Unitarian Church and was a docent at the Cape Ann Museum. For her years of dedicated service and leadership, she was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by the Gloucester Rotary, in 2013.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by her three children, David B. Babson and his wife, Annalei (McGreevy) Babson, and their children Kavika and Toni Rose, of Rockport; Amanda L. Babson of Narragansett, RI; and Warren C. Babson and his wife, Rachel Grinstead-Babson, and their children Winston and Cedarmae, of Gloucester; and her brother Corbin C. Cogswell, III and his wife Lynda W. Cogswell of Cape May, NJ.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Corbin C. Cogswell, Jr. and Mary (Chapman) Cogswell, of Baltimore, MD.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gloucester Education Foundation, http://www.thinkthebest.org.
Funeral services will be held at the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church, 10 Church Street, Gloucester, On Saturday, August 3 at 11 a.m.

This is how they do lobster logos down on Cape Cod-
Now call me crazy but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that any kid on Cape Ann (the far superior Cape in every way) could do better.
So here’s how we’re gonna prove it.
Any kid under 16 years old that wants to create a lobster sign logo that has the two phrases- “Captain Joe and Sons” and “Cape Ann” on it instead of the sign from Cape Cod that says “Barlow’s” and “Clam Shack”
will be entered onto a vote on GMG. The sign that gets the most votes I’ll give a $20 gift certificate for Surfari.
I believe 100% that our youth will lay an absolute smackdown on the inferior Cape’s rendition of a lobster sign.

THE WONDERFUL MIRACLE AND MESSINESS OF BIRTH – PIPING PLOVER CHICKS HATCHING PART TWO
I stopped by on my way home from work, fully expecting to see all three chicks hatched. Dad was sitting on the nest and two fluffy chicks were zooming in and out. He left the nest for a moment and wonderful luck of luck, the third chick was making its appearance!!
When I write messy, it is because while the third chick was hatching, the two older ones needed to thermoregulate, or cuddle, beneath the parent’s wing. There was a great deal of seeming disorder going on beneath the canopy provided by Dad’s fluffed out feathers.
Because the two older siblings were running in and out of the nest, as well as the parents leaving to discard the remaining chick’s eggshell pieces, I had a longer window into the third chick’s hatching (by mere seconds, I mean). Plus the twelve-hour-old chicks were just as adorable as could be!
From a nest of three eggs, two chicks hatched at dawn and the third, at day’s end. During both times, I had my movie camera on a tripod zoomed in on the nest and was able to film and simultaneously take still photos. A very unforgettable and happy day!!!!!!!!!!
Mom switched places with Dad but only stayed for a few moments before hopping up quickly. All three chicks were in the nest. You can see the newly hatched chick with its two older siblings.

Visit Hammond Castle Museum during the month of August for our featured artist. Artist and illustrator, Bonnie Jeanne (B.J.) Faulkner has been a professional artist for the past 50 years. Her artistic talent was identified early in life when she was selected to attend art classes at the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio. In 1969 Faulkner visited a solo exhibit of Matisse’s huge canvases at the Grand Palais in Paris, France. The experience left an indelible impression on Faulkner whose style is reminiscent of Duffy and Matisse. Her Art evokes a sense of elegance through her charming and colorful interpretations of the world’s most loved and traveled cities and villages. Also, a singer, her career as a singer is a strong influence on her art.
In 1996, Faulkner established her own artist-run gallery, the B.J. Faulkner Gallery in Lenox, Massachusetts in the Berkshires as a flagship location to showcase her work. That same year, Faulkner was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra to design the Tanglewood music festival poster. Faulkner’s illustrations have appeared on a range of products from note cards, to book covers for Prentice-Hall and others, as well as the United Airlines European destination poster. Her illustrations focus on travel, leisure, luxury, lifestyle, children, and theatrical projects. Influenced by travel, her paintings depict romantic townscapes, serene landscapes, and beautiful seaside motifs.
In 2007 Faulkner was honored to receive a Lifetime Achievement Award for her artistic talent from her alma mater Maumee Valley Country Day School in Toledo, Ohio. She has participated in numerous shows and fundraising events throughout her career.
