Cemetery Stroll Magnolia Point
It was time for another cemetery stroll; this time at the Magnolia Point Cemetery on Magnolia Avenue. A Guide to Cemeteries in Essex County, Massachusetts indicates this is a city owned cemetery tended to by the Gloucester DPW. It further says that individual burials are not recorded, but that there may be a list of some deed holders with the DPW.
It’s well taken care of (thanks, DPW!), small and nicely laid out. I didn’t notice many religious icons but there are several well known family names. I was looking for one grave for the FindAGrave project but did not locate it; honestly, I was rather grateful since it was for a young child and hose always make me a little sad.
It’s great this information is shared on the sign. That’s pretty rare in cemeteries.

Join the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce on Thursday, October 3, for the Chamber’s annual $25,000 Game. The event will be held from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at The Gloucester House Restaurant, 63 Rogers Street, Gloucester, MA, and one person will walk away the lucky winner of $10,000. As one of the most exciting and fun-filled events on Cape Ann this Fall, it will also feature a 50/50 raffle, door prizes and much more. A total of $25,000 in prizes!
Tickets are available on a first come first served basis at the Chamber office located at 33 Commercial Street in Gloucester and are $100 each. A limit of 500 tickets will be sold. Each ticket admits the ticket holder and one guest to the Gloucester House festivities on October 3 and includes a light dinner. Prizes are as follows:

Running for Randy!!
Hey Joey, my name is Vanessa Rowe ( Bertolino ) I’m from Gloucester, my husband Derrick Rowe and two of his friends Matt Woundy and Kevin Pelletier ( also from Gloucester) are running the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC at the end of October and they have decided to dedicate this Marathon to our dear friend Randy Burns. You may know Randy but if not I’ll tell you a little about him. He was hurt in a roofing accident in 2013 that has left him in a wheel chair and unable to work. Currently Randy is unable to shower properly because his bathroom shower is broken. Right now he showers in an outdoor shower and we’d love to help him raise enough money to fix it before the winter comes. I was hoping you could share our fundraiser to get the word out. Hello All Rowers,
This Saturday September 14th is the annual Gloucester Harbor Race around Gloucester Harbor. This is a 3 plus mile rowing race. We will be having four of the IDRC race boats and two practice boat in the event. The event starts at 8 AM and the races start at 9:30 AM at Niles Beach. The racers travel out the harbor towards Breakwater and turns back down the harbor to Ten Pound Island and turns at Paint Factory towards Niles Beach and finishes at the beach. If you have free time make your way to Niles Beach to cheer on our racers.
With this said the four race boats and two practice boats will not be available Saturday until after 2 pm. If there is a race boat at the dock in the morning please do not take it for a row. Sorry for the inconvenience this may cause anyone. Thank you very much for your cooperation on this day.

I did the caculation for Granite Pier in Rockport. If you are on good Harbor Beach the moon’s upper limb breaks the horizon two seconds earlier. Tonight full moon is not super. The opposite of super at aphelion, furthest from earth.
But it is a Friday. And it is the thirteenth. So if you see Jason Voorhees with a hockey mask just run away. He does not move very fast. Do not trip, do not go in the basement. If you go into a room, turn the light on. If it does not work, run away. Do not have sex. Do not visit any rooms or especially the garage where there are power tools.
Friday August 13, 2049 is the next time this will occur. I’ll be 94 and likely lobster food way before then so I am going to take a peek tonight.

The MCFM Committee will be setting up our own independent table to host the raffle. We will collect names, emails, and phone numbers. Guests need not be present to win. Classic Cooks has most generously offered us a GRAND PRIZE donation, consisting of a Thanksgiving Dinner for 6, delivered hot and ready on Thanksgiving day. This raffle ticket will be separate from the collection, as we plan to use it as a fundraising opportunity to benefit additional advertising for next season! We hope that throughout the day on Sunday you will entice your customers to visit our table to sign up for the raffle. Prizes will be pulled during the final 15 minutes of the market. In the next 24 hours, I will be posting a flyer and an event on our facebook page and we encourage you to share and post about it to build a broader audience for this week!

In an effort to celebrate our success, we would love to turn September 15, the final market of the season, into a bit of a block party. We’d like to make it fun for the customers and vendors alike. We are hoping to put together a free raffle for customers and are asking vendors to participate by submitting an item as a fun prize. By handing out raffle tickets we will be asking for customer email to create a mailing list for our website (under construction) to better construct our advertising plan for next season. Our idea is that our musical guest, Tony Frontiero, will announce some winners of free give aways in the final hour. (Customers need not be present to win, but it would be nice; we can take the reigns on prize notification after the market closes if need be). We will be working with Classic Cooks to obtain a one-day permit to serve/sell mimosas on the street throughout the morning. If you are a food vendor, it would be nice if there were a few extra free samples available to keep the merriment flowing.
At the close of the market, we would truly love to have all our vendors join us for an end-of-the-summer toast at the Pub (JD Meyers and Friends) to congratulate us all on our amazing summer!

Come celebrate and support Appleton Farms at our annual Farm Day Fall Festival! Bring your friends, family, neighbors and everyone you know for some good old fashion fun on the farm. This event is perfect for all ages. Your ticket and attendance support Appleton Farms continued effort to provide quality food, programs and space for our community.
This year we are excited to be growing and expanding our longest running event! We will have your usual favorites that include visiting with our farm animals, painting your own pumpkin, challenging your friends in a potato sack race or hay obstacle course, taking a ride on the ponies, enjoying a wagon ride across the farm, climbing aboard our tractors, listening to some live music, and so much more. New additions will include an Appleton Farms cafe with farm goodies, local craft vendors with quality homemade goods, info and educational booths from local organizations and experts, and a pumpkin launcher!
All of this activity will surely have you hungry and thirsty. Luckily you will be able to visit our food court where you will find local food trucks, snack vendors and some delicious desert. A vendor list will be posted on our Facebook page. However, you can expect some BBQ, baked goods, ice cream, shaved ice, and more. Old Planters will also be stopping by to serve some beer beginning at noon. Yum!!
Admission includes everything except food, beverages and the pumpkin launcher. This event runs rain or shine. Admission fee is by the car load, so we encourage you to car pool. We will be offering a single adult ticket for those who will be traveling alone. Become a Trustees member at this event and recevie the ticket difference back along with a free gift!
Pick #3: Open Newbury Street, Boston
While shopping on Newbury Street is a bit out of my league, I love that they now close off the street to all automobile traffic three times each summer so that people can stroll, shop, eat, drink, and listen to music on Newbury Street.
This Sunday, September 15th, from 10:00-6:00 marks the final Open Newbury of this season.
Building on the success of the last two years of Open Newbury Street events, Mayor Martin J. Walsh today announced that “Open Newbury Street” will continue this year over a series of three Sundays this summer. From 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. on July 8th, August 12th, and September 9th, Newbury Street will become a pedestrian-only walkway, closing to vehicles to allow pedestrians the opportunity use the full width of the street. Newbury Street will be pedestrian-only from Arlington Street to Massachusetts Avenue.
“Over the past two years, we’ve had overwhelming success in creating a pedestrian-friendly experience for Newbury Street visitors and businesses and I am excited that we’ll be continuing this series again this summer,” said Mayor Walsh. “From being able to shop for products both in the store and out, to enjoying lunch next to a street performer, we are happy that residents and visitors will get to experience this opportunity, and are grateful to the business owners and residents who have worked with us to expand this next edition of the Open Newbury Street series.”
“We’re so happy that Open Newbury Street is returning this summer,” said Brianne Dyke, Manager of Crush Boutique. “These pedestrian friendly shopping days draw a wonderful crowd, and create a strong sense of community. It means so much to us that as Boston continues to grow, the Mayor’s Office continues to be supportive of small businesses like ours. We’ve truly enjoyed collaborating with our neighbors to create special events for the Open Newbury Sundays, and we look forward to another wonderful summer on our vibrant street.”
Parking will once again be restricted beginning at 8:00 a.m., and signs will be posted informing drivers of the change. All businesses will be encouraged to promote the event on social media using #OpenNewbury and make customers aware of car-free day ahead of time. The public is encouraged to utilize the several different MBTA routes that service the area in addition to bicycling and walking.
