Second Annual Classic Car Show Kicks off Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation’s Autumn-Winter-Spring Program Season!

A picture perfect early fall day set the scene for the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation’s second annual Cape Ann Classic Cars on the Green on Saturday, September 28. More than 30 antique and classic cars lined the historic Meetinghouse’s grand allee while scores of car enthusiasts, families, and visitors to Gloucester strolled the promenade. John Hicks and his Giddy Gang provided the perfect accompaniment with their distinctive Dixieland band.

Entries to the invitational show spanned more than 50 years with two 1923 Model T’s representing the earliest entries and a 1979 Firebird TA as the most recent. Both visitors and owners voted for their favorite cars in nine categories ranging from Best in Show to Most Luxurious, Most Ostentatious, and Most Fun. The runaway winner for the day was the 1963 Turino Turquoise Cadillac convertible owned the Tim Sparks of Lowell. The ’63 Caddie was the crowd favorite for Most Elegant, Most Luxurious, and Grand Touring/Comfort.

Tours of the historic 1806 Meetinghouse were a popular attraction. Among the building’s many historic and notable details and treasures, visitors were most intrigued by the 1785 charter signed by freed slave Gloster Dalton and the role that the Meetinghouse played in the legal battle that resulted in the incorporation of a policy around the separation of church and state in the United States Constitution. Bob Wech, Music Director for the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church thrilled visitors with a rousing mini-concert on the 1893 Hutchings-Fisk pipe organ to complete the tour.

Congratulations to all the 2019 winners!

About Appleton Farms: Appleton Farms offers a rare glimpse into New England’s agricultural past- rolling grasslands, grazing livestock, stone walls, and historic farm buildings are part of this 1,000-acre pastoral landscape. One of the oldest continuously-operating farms in the country, Appleton Farms still raises dairy cows, goats and chickens and is home to six miles of paths for pedestrians and horses. The farm was gifted to the Trustees by Colonel Francis Appleton and continues to operate in its centuries-old tradition by operating a Farm Stand and CSA.

The Trustees is a non-profit that preserves, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts. AUTUMN COLORS AT FRESH WATER COVE DOLLIVER’S NECK

Late summer colors turning to autumn gold

“Dolliver’s Neck is a small arm of land pointing north off the western shore of the Gloucester’s Outer Harbor. It is the cradling arm that creates Fresh Water Cove, a small cove where Samuel de Champlain found fresh water on his first visit to Gloucester Harbor in 1606. It was named for Samuel Dolliver who came from Marblehead in 1652 and bought a farm there.

In Lane’s time there were a few fishing shacks visible in some of his paintings where onshore fishermen could put their boats in from the pebble beach and salt marsh and be out in the center of the harbor without the long row or sail from the Inner Harbor. Fresh Water Cove itself is not deep enough at low tide for larger vessels to moor there so it has retained its small scale and intimate feel down through the years.

In 1900 a Coast Guard lifesaving station was built and manned on Dolliver’s Neck and many lives were saved along that rocky and treacherous coast between Gloucester and Magnolia.”

IMG_5059.jpgRestorative Yoga Class, 11:30-12:30 at MAGMA (right after Nia class that runs from 10:15-11:15am)

This is one of the favorite post in my classes, legs on a chair.  Catchy title, eh?

Seriously it’s great for low back discomfort, leg pain, swelling, circulation, etc.

Come tomorrow and you can look as relaxed as this participant.

If you have never tried Restorative Yoga, it is a relaxing and nurturing practice that allows the body and mind to relax and well, restore.  All you need to do is sit or lie on a mat with your body supported by bolsters, blocks and blankets.  I do all the work.  No energy or expertise required for you.  The benefits of the practice include better sleep, less anxiety, gentle stretching of the body especially the chest and shoulders, etc.

Hope to see you soon!

Linda

BREAKING: WINGS OF FREEDOM VINTAGE B-17 BOMBER CRASHES

Reports are coming in that the Collings Foundation World War II B-17G bomber crashed into a building at the Bradley International Airport. Three people were injured.

“The B-17 and B-24 were the backbone of the Allied bomber campaign against Nazi occupied Europe. Army Air Forces crews flew the bombers from bases in England and Italy. The bombers also were used the Pacific theater.”

This is the same plane that was in Beverly last month for the “Wings of Freedom” tour. My husband usually goes to the see the vintage planes every year and many of us love hearing the distinctive rumble of their engines overhead in the summertime.
