A cloudy day on Magnolia Pier

Took a walk to Magnolia Pier after the rain.  We did need the rain and the flowers are happy.  Magnolia Harbor was quiet and peaceful with Kettle Island waiting for kayakers.

Gloucester, MA – Rocky Neck Art Colony is pleased to announce the opening of Boundless: The Art of the Book, on view at the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck from July 17 through August 24, 2025.

This dynamic exhibition explores the rich and ever-evolving world of the book as an art form. Featuring artist books, altered books, and book illustration, Boundless showcases imaginative approaches to storytelling, visual poetry, personal narratives, and inventive book structures. Visitors will encounter works that range from the traditional to the avant-garde—books that hang, twist, stand, open like advent calendars, or defy conventional forms altogether.

The exhibition presents an array of techniques including letterpress, etching, monoprint, painting, photography, and mixed media. Through these varied practices, artists interrogate themes of memory, imagination, identity, and the contemporary moment.

An Opening Reception will be held on Sunday, July 20, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The public is warmly invited to view the work, meet the artists, and enjoy refreshments and lively conversation.

Boundless features contributions from a distinguished group of artists, including local creatives, university faculty, and artists affiliated with book arts communities throughout New England and beyond, including Boston, Philadelphia, New York, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Tonight! William Pettit Artist Reception at Jane Deering Gallery #GloucesterMA

William Pettit | the sea between

Jane Deering Gallery 4-6pm July 10, 2025

From the gallery:

“This is an exhibit about the sea.
The horizon is the destination.
Where the sea and the sky meet, there is no reference to land.
Hope and longing are between here and there.
A storm might be approaching or subsiding, it’s not clear in the stillness.
There are questions of geomorphology, but distance is measured in the heart, not in miles.
These are paintings about painting.
They are an homage to Fitz Henry Lane, whose stillness of brush reflecting safe harbor contrasts and balances the perils of voyage and of distance.
They are an homage to Captain Harvey MacKay, whose home was the Jane Deering Gallery at 19 Pleasant Street in 1842. His ship “Boston” was struck by lightning and lost on May, 26, 1830.
They are an homage to poet Charles Olson, who saw Gloucester in mythical terms and in actual terms, a place made up of people.
In his poetry of space, Gloucester moves Outward—to the sea.
These paintings speak of the sea as a distance measured in the heart, not in miles.
They work in the space between geology and poetry, a mythical expanse of loss and hope. They are about moving forward and about what is left behind.
In the eternal space between here and there, there is the finite stillness of the present, measured by the heart. Solitude is the intimate and immediate present of being here, in a brushstroke or a drip, among the winds and the currents.

Before you play the video, say this line out loud as if you were suggesting to a friend that you go there for a drink.

Before playing the video, say “Let’s go to Saluti for a drink.” Out loud. Then play the video and see if you got it right.

My Baby is no longer a baby

My Baby is no longer a baby, originally uploaded by captjoe06.

OK I’m really really having a tough time with this.

Since the Bean was a couple months old she slept and put herself to sleep with her two binkies. One orange, and one pink.

The Mrs and I have been lamenting the day that we would have to take the binkies away because we figured that Ellie would never get to sleep without them, and the horror show it would be trying to get her to sleep.

Out of the blue last night she tells her mom that she wants to give her binkies to the fishies and lobsters down at daddy’s wharf.

So she came down and tossed them to the fishies without even batting an eyelash. What was supposed to be this trying time of transition into being a little girl from a baby happened in the blink of an eye.

And I’m pretty sad about it.

It’s the last thing of her being a baby, and there’s no turning back.

    Whoa.
