Have a great day! ☀️
The stripers are arriving and this salty kid couldn’t wait to get out there and catch his first of the season.

When one moves to a new town and you are a Senior person, it can be a bit challenging to “get yourself out there” and find new favorite places and make new friends! Attempts have been made over the past 2 1/2 years when I moved to
Gloucester but had been waylaid due to knee surgeries. I discovered The Source Bakery which I frequently visit on Saturday mornings and I met their employee, Emily. I love the warm and cozy feeling there not to mention the delicious biscuits with homemade jam accompanied by a hot chai. It is there that I got my passport card for the Gloucester Main Street Mother’s Day Stroll, (after savoring a scrumptious egg sandwich), had it stamped and started my quest! I found out about the Stroll on Facebook as I follow Good Morning Gloucester. On the following, showery Wednesday, I started my steps (with recovering knees), at Masshole & Co., having no idea what it was all about. I met Cassandra, the owner who just opened last November and she makes treats for dogs and cats, ones in the shape of Massachusetts! I bought some (the dog loves them), and got stamped. There are also pet toys and other pet friendly items to select! She is so enthusiastic about her treats and store! It was enchanting to see her youthful exuberance! I was able to find parking further down Main St. in front of The Village Silversmith (Love that store), where I met a lovely lady and I bought 3 jewelry treasures and got stamped. Crossed the street in pouring rain, (got drenched) and went to Sweats of Gloucester, (been there before), met the manager, Noelle, (she was so funny and helpful!), who directed me to some of the stores nearby on the card telling me you are not obligated to buy anything and can simply ask to get your card stamped. I did buy a new Gloucester long sleeved shirt as I was looking for one! It was meant to be!
It stopped pouring so I was able to meander my way up to Mark Adrian Shoes where I bought new support sneakers last year after the second knee replacement, got stamped, crossed the street and went to Fireflies Boutique discovering it offered plenty of adorable clothes, toys and novelties for children. I was drooling over a pair of rainbow colored galoshes I wished they had for adult old ladies like me!! I have gone by this store many times, never knew it was there or what they sold! Got my stamp. Moving quest forward, I parked my car near Virgilio’s! Have frequented with family members there several times but never visited or even noticed the other delightful establishments just short walking steps away from Virgilio’s like Cafe Sicilia (been searching for that one awhile!) I met Carmella at Cafe Sicilia with whom I exchanged a few Italian words (I’m half Italian), got card stamped and rested sensitive knees with a cappuccino and a delish pistachio biscotti, one of many delectable “dolces”(sweets) all handmade right there! It has now become one of my new fave places to go! I went back the next day, (saw Carmella who brought my cappuccino and cannoli to me) because, another retailer told me they have amazing cannolis and man…..they were right!! So welcoming! So friendly! Felt a bit of my father sitting there with me for a moment! I ventured up and across the street to Pop Gallery and met the owner, Laura, got stamped and heard how her store began and evolved a bit to what it is now…..a variety of handmade artisan items and novelties perfect for any occasion. Who knew?! Never noticed it in many previous drive- bys! Next to the Bookstore of Gloucester just steps away to get stamped and then my final stamp stop, Cape Ann Olive Oil. There I met manager, Betsy, with whom I chatted for a little bit telling her how wonderful I thought this whole Mother’s Day Stroll event was! She totally agreed! I maybe would have eventually gone to the store as I had seen the sign before, but this motivated me to step up and go in. I actually bought a small bottle of cider balsamic vinaigrette. I have been wanting to buy vinaigrette for awhile. In that little stretch of storefronts I went right by Castaways. Never knew where it was but had heard about it online and wanted to see it and suddenly, there it was. Betsy was delightful and seeing me walking with a cane, showed me I could walk right down the walkway outside her store which I did and found the outside cafe tables and chairs where one can casually rest and savor a Castaway coffee or a smoothie. Said “hi” to a couple of gents relaxing at a sidewalk table as I walked by. I had secured my 10 required stamps and turned in the weathered card feeling I had accomplished something very special! To my delight, I found the Vintage clothing apparel store at Castaways. Pretty cool stuff there! On my way out Castaways door I spotted a blue knitted sweated with a knitted lobster outline on its front which I has seen on Castaways website. It haunted me all night and yes…..I went back the next day and bought it and love it!! It’s soft and comfy! Done! I had completed my downtown quest! Now, you would think so but…..I had gone by Cafe Bishco and even though I didn’t need any more stamps, I had to pass it on my way to the car and curiously seeked to discover its goods; a never-ending selection of amazing sandwiches, salads and frozen yogurt and my favorite, homemade lemon rice soup, one of several homemade soups cooked there. Cannot wait to get more soup and try a sandwich and of course, a frozen yogurt! Mmmmm! Taking my final steps down the brick sidewalk to my car with soup, goodies and treasures in hand, I felt fulfilled and satisfied that I had done something very important, at least for me!
It didn’t matter to me even from the start if I won any prize and this was especially confirmed when I got in my car and retraced my journey that day. You see, I had already won immeasurable things! I discovered new, unique shops and eateries to visit, met new friends to talk to, saw special future buys for people and even exercised my surgical knees. It was a “win-win” all around.
I highly encourage the event planners do a repeat of this event again. It encourages and motivates not only temporary visitors to Gloucester, but also locals like me to step it up and go adventuring, to visit charming and mouth-watering establishments that may have been passed up or overlooked searching for beaches or simply running errands!
Thank you to the people responsible for organizing the Main Street Mother’s Day Stroll and to all the vendors who gave their time and support to the event! You have added a whole new world for this Senior, relatively new resident to Gloucester to explore and revisit!
Go ahead visitors and locals! I challenge you to give it a try next time! I guarantee, if you put in the effort, you won’t regret it!
Grateful and smiling,
Barbara Eisenzopf

“The Flower Moon Show”…I am not sure there is anything more spectacular in nature than to witness the full moon rise over the ocean on the horizon. Last night did not look very promising as there was a band of clouds on the horizon. But I waited and hoped for that special moment. I was able to position myself across from Thacher Lighthouse and witness the moon with its bright colors rise. Its colors were amazing and were even more brilliant than the light from the lighthhouse. I waited and timed my exposure to match when the light from the lighthouse came on and just stood in amazement at nature’s incredible show. Enjoy!

Multi-Grain…

Fourteen Cape Ann Artisans are busy preparing their work and studios to welcome residents of Cape Ann and visitors from everywhere this coming June 7-8. At the end of 2024, the Artisans juried in five new members who jumped on board to join the veterans of the group.
There’s quite a bit that goes into preparing and getting the word out. The newly jelled Artisans have diligently posted blogs and created videos to give the public a peek into their studios and creative inspiration. The new group video has been posted under the “About” page on the Cape Ann Artisans website. Individual videos are under each Artisans page on the website.
The 2025 Cape Ann Artisan tour Brochure is also now available. It’s now a 4-fold pamphlet opening up to a map of the tour. The brochures can be found at the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and other key visitor locations throughout Gloucester, Rockport, and Essex. They will also be available at the 95 North Visitor Center operated by the North of Boston CVB, as well as at inns, hotels, and CAA partners such as the Cape Ann Savings Bank and Institution for Savings lobby areas. It is also downloadable from the CAA website.
Among the new twists, more artisans will be doing demonstrations of their techniques during the tour. To help plan your day, here is the list of artists doing demonstrations:
11AM: Pam Stratton – Pulling Glass Threads
12: PM – Danette English – Wheel Throwing
1:00 PM – John Abisamra – Printing (photos)
2:00 PM – Cindy Efinger – Garden Sculpture
3:00 PM – Melody Phaneuf – Enlarging a Plein Air Study
Throughout the day – Sara Wright at the Loom
Among the other fun opportunities is to participate in the Grocery Gift Card Promotion. It’s simple, just sign up on our email list to be entered into a drawing for one of five $20 WholeFoods gift cards. You can also earn more tickets when you buy art at the studios (with a 10 ticket maximum).
The Artisans tour is among the oldest studio event in the US. It was founded in 1980 by men and women from the Gloucester/Rockport arts communities who were interested in connecting with each other to share professional and creative perspectives, and in blurring and challenging the line between art and craft. The full list of Artisans and the new tour route are shown below. New members are marked with an asterisk.
