GMGI Presents: What Nature Can Teach Us About Living Longer, Healthier Lives

 ~ GLOUCESTER MARINE GENOMICS INSTITUTE

Picture this: you’re sitting in one of Cape Ann’s most beautiful venues, listening to a renowned aging scientist, learning about some of the earth’s longest-lived animals and what they can teach us.

Please join us on Tuesday, June 3rd at Rockport Music for a night of science by the sea with special guest, Steven Austad, Ph.D.

Come to hear Dr. Austad tell stories of some extraordinary animals, considering why, for example, animal species that fly live longer than earthbound species, and why animals found in the ocean live longest of all.

Dr. Austad’s approach to studying aging differs from the usual approach found in the field of aging science. Instead of focusing on species with short lifespans like fruit flies and mice, which are experimentally manageable but unsuccessful at combating aging, he investigates nature’s biggest successes, like a 400-year-old shark or a 200-year-old whale. He suggests we should research long-lived species — instead of those with short lifespans — and use them as models for discovering novel anti-aging products and processes.

Opening remarks and Q & A with Andrea Bodnar, Ph.D., GMGI’s Donald G. Comb Science Director.

Doors open at 5:30pm and the talk begins promptly at 6pm.

This talk is free and open to the public, but registration is required. Space is limited – please click here to register!

Cape Ann Community Foundation’s June 5 Candlepins for a Cause EventWill Spotlight Support for Non-Profit Organizations, Programs

The Cape Ann Community Foundation (CACF) will celebrate its support for the region’s non-profit organizations and programs with its second annual Candlepins for a Cause fundraiser event at Cape Ann Lanes on June 5.

That evening, from 5:30-7:30 pm, the Foundation will celebrate recipients of its 2025 grants. Since its inception in 2015, the foundation has awarded more than 50 grants totalling over $100,000 to Cape Ann non-profit and community organizations. This year, the Foundation received a record number of grant applications during the April proposal submission period. The Foundation selected nine recipients from across Cape Ann, representing a range of services.

At the June 5 event, CACF grant recipients and friends of the Foundation will come together to spotlight CACF support for community organizations and programs and promote adoption of the Cape Ann license plates, which play a key role in this work by generating funds for Foundation grants. The sale of Cape Ann license plates and direct donations to CACF make the Foundation grants possible.

Anyone interested in forming a team is asked to make a $200 donation for a team of six bowlers. Individual bowlers can join for a $35 donation to the Foundation.  Those who’d like to attend the event and cheer on the bowlers – and support the Foundation – can do so with a $20 donation.

Bowlers will compete for prizes for best team score and best individual blowers.

Teams, individual bowlers and other attendees can register by clicking on the event link on the Cape Ann Community Foundation website, www.lovecapeann.com.

“The support we generate with Candlepins for a Cause – along with the revenue from Cape Ann license plate sales and direct donations to the Foundation – helps us assist our region’s non-profit and community organizations,” said CACF Co-Chair Britta Cahoon.

“The Candlepins for a Cause fundraiser will be a fun way to help the Foundation continue its work while honoring the organizations that serve the Cape Ann community,” said  Tony Sapienza, CACF Co-Chair.

CACF held its first-ever Candlepins for a Cause event in June 2024, and the fundraiser was a sell-out. The Foundation also held a successful virtual golf Driving for Dollars fundraiser at Harbor 9 Golf in February, spotlighting the Cape Ann license plate.
