Kops ‘n Kids Fishing Program

How great is this. Gloucester just keeps getting better and better.

The old adage goes “a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work” but our new Gloucester Police Departments’ Kops n Kids fishing program is our work and there are no bad days. That is because our work is so much more than just fishing.

We use fishing as a tool to connect police officers and our youth in Gloucester. Officers work side by side with kids, helping them bait, cast, hook and release fish all while bonding and learning that they are not so different from each other after all. We will also teach kids about fishing conservation and boating safety. Our fishing experience will create opportunities to instill patience, ingenuity, preparation and humility. Fishing is an activity most anyone can do and afford. We will provide all fishing equipment and life jackets. We will be using our police boat, life jackets must be worn, waivers must be signed. One parent per child may attend. We will be fishing from the inner harbor to Ten Pound Island only. Children will also haul one lobster trap and officers will teach the children how the lobster trap works. Everyone is welcome to sign up, but preference will be given to children who have never experienced fishing or boating before. You can sign up by visiting (in person) at the Community Impact Unit inside Browns Mall.

Gloucester residents only, three children per fishing trip. Trips will last two hours. Weather permitting first trip Monday July 19th two groups;10am and 12pm noon, pick up and drop off from the Harbormaster’s Office. Mass Division of Marine fisheries will be supplying junior fishing log books and educational materials.Deadline to sign up for our maiden voyage is this Thursday July 15th by noon, we will randomly choose three children for each trip Friday July 16th at noon via random wheel on Facebook live. More trips to follow.

Lunch at Salt Water Grille Was Delicious

We recently had a great lunch experience at Salt Water Grille on Washington Street (former Friendly’s). On a quiet weekday afternoon, we were greeted cheerfully and received service attention from Erin in a very timely manner. The Saltwater Spritzer was exactly what the humid day called for….light and refreshing. I had the Blackened Haddock Tacos which were seasoned precisely to my preferences. The pieces were larger than I anticipated and DELICIOUS. Jim got the Fish and Chips after the Potato Skin appetizer. I had enough room left for a brownie sundae!! The atmosphere is casual and friendly. We had not been back since before the pandemic and we are glad to add Salt Water Grille back into our meal rotation! Thanks Erin.

Cape Ann Whale Watch Sunset Trip

We took a trip with Cape Ann Whale Watch last night for a Sunset Cruise under threatening skies and came home with these wonderful memories. We had travelled back from Long Island earlier in the day and since the weather did not look promising, I was sorely tempted to bail out on this trip. But my faith in the Cape All Whale Watch staff to make the trip memorable overcame my temporary reluctance. It turned out that my faith was absolutely justified.

Several family groups including a number of excited children were also aboard, as were photographer friends Jessica and Melissa. Tina was our naturalists, Capt John was at the helm and several interns were along to make our trip successful (shout out to intern Keirsten!) . Although my expectations were VERY low, we did make our way out to the feeding grounds and spent time with Jabbaroo and her calf. The calf was super-playful displaying behaviors such as chin breaching, pectoral slapping, AND a full spinning breach or two! This calf was recently injured in an entanglement and you can see the damage done to its body in some of these pictures. It was a life threatening injury but it appears the calf is recovering. Although the lighting was poor under clouds and light rain, we were treated to the full show and some of the pictures turned out well enough to share.

We got NO sunset, but I would 100% recommend an evening ride with Cape Ann Whale Watch even if the weather is not ideal. Additional pictures and story details posted to Pat D’s Photos and Adventures Facebook page.

Giant Seagull

This giant seagull photobombed my harbor photo today. I have a tendency to take photos every day…no matter where I’ve been. So, I’m trying to get in the habit of deleted any unwanted photos each night. This giant seagull surprised me tonight. I thought I was just taking a photo of the inner harbor from Capt. Joe & Sons…. I didn’t even see the seagull
