Dave Sag’s Blues Party to host The Earley Birds @ The Rhumb Line Tonight 8:30-11:30pm 11.6.2014
Get that file out and start sharpening your chainsaw in preparation for the arrival of “The Earley Birdz”. No, not the dentist drill of a saxist, but the other one: the Mississippi saxophonist and graveyard vocalist, the OTHER Mark Earley. A great singer, I have worked occasionally with him and love his vibe and choice of material.

Of course, it doesn’t hurt to drag in that fabulous guitarist : Mr. Larry Sortwell, late of the great band “Grapevine Road”, to whoop it up. And wait’ll you hear his creamy voice, smooth as baby’s feet. Mr. John Cameron, keyboard wizard and my personal food taster, is also making a rare appearance, what with being so busy making toys for xmas in his workshop. Round it out with Mr. John Loud, local boy made good, on eggbeaters, and you have a great night of cool toons. I’m really excited about this. Now, if I could just stop the voices in my head….

7 Central presents ~ The Dejas Saturday November 8, 2014 9-12 midnight
I wanted to give you a heads-up about a great musical act performing at 7 Central this Saturday night from 9 to midnight.
I hope you’ll drop in and support this duo and give them a nice Manch-Vegas-by-the-Sea welcome. I’m very excited to have them come play. I have been speaking to them about doing so – literally for 2 and a half years – and this is the first time we have pulled it together.
Have a great weekend.

Music Around Town ~ November 3-9, 2014
Dare I? Oh Why Not!
Halloween morning I dressed in jeans, a heavy long sleeve shirt with black and white stripes, a watch jacket, and outrageous pirate hat. All of these items came from Bananas, a vintage clothing store on Main Street. Captain Fred’s first adventure of the day was a medical appointment at Addison gilbert Hospital. As I got off the bus, I almost chickened out with the hat, but decided to just suck it in and go for it.
I got a lot of attention walking through the lobby, down the hall, and in the elevator. Everyone who passed by smiled, and most said “Happy Halloween” or “Trick or Treat.” Once on the fourth floor, oncology, I was greeted by a witch, and signed in by a Thing with blue hair. I had found kindred spirits on my favorite floor. Of course, we had to take a photo. Nurse Kristen is the witch on my right, and Myriah, of departmental administration, is the Thing on my left. Whether Witch or Thing, they are great people providing exceptional care to me and all of their patients.
Zombie Blowout and Costume Contest Halloween night @ The Rhumb Line with Just Like Newman ~ Friday at 8:30pm – 12:30am
Help out while having fun. In light of this weeks terrible fire in Magnolia, Just Like Newman would like to ask friends to come to the Halloween party this Friday night with a couple of extra dollars or perhaps a gift card to Marshalls, Market Basket, CVS or another local business that we can donate to the victims of the fire. We’ll put out a bucket to collect everything and 100% will go directly to the victims… Don’t forget to wear your costume!
This Thursday Just Quinn joins the Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb Line 8:30-11:30pm 10.30.2014
Golly; a lot of harp players lately. Yet, I’ve saved the best for last, at least for this month. Let’s welcome back Justin Quinn and his rolling roadblock for an evening of pedal-to-the-mettle fuel-injected blues. The long time host of Glenn’s Cool Bar blues sessions in Nbpt. is hitchhiking down here to give you a whiff of the real deal blueswise, and it’s going to be terrific, or,at least, terrifying. I love playing with this guy!
He’s bringing along Mr. Jon Ross, guitarist xtroidinaire, to mold the clay, and the ever so tonsorially-challenged drummbler, Mr. Steevee Chaggaris, to beat you to a pulp. It’s pre-Halloween, so nobody will notice if you dress funny. Not that they ever do. Bring a date and dance to the whites of her eyes!

Torn Between Two Lovers
Choices…choices.
Dear Grapefruit Beer,
I truly love you and think that honestly I always will…but, it’s late fall and it may be time to let you go. I’ve had other loves in my lifetime, but none as serious as you. There was Boone’s Farm in college (for reals), Rolling Rock shortly there after, and then of course, the years spent with Corona…both here on our soil and in other countries.
It is no reflection on you…it just may be time to shake things up a little bit. While my love for pumpkin will never replace my love for you, tart grapefruit, I am feeling the need for a change in my life…and it just may be you that needs to go.
I’m going to spend some time with my new friend, Pumpkin, this weekend and see how it feels. If it feels right, you and I may simply need to take a break (think Ross and Rachel). Don’t be surprised though, when spring is in the air, if I come running back to you. I have a feeling that is exactly what will happen….and of course, I hope that you will be happy to have me back. In the meantime, I dedicate this song to you.
Love always,
Your Good Friend.
Go Pound Sand
CNN, Memories, and a Shirt
I confess, in my several months of confinement in medical facilities and at home, I’ve become a hopeless news junkie. The current scandal is about sketchy courses for athletes at the University of North Carolina. The so-called “paper classes” did not require attendance and had no professors – students just got a good grade. When at Syracuse University, I was required to take one science class, so I signed up for Physics 101. Upon entering the huge lecture hall, I saw a lot of really big guys. The course material was below high school level. The students called it “football physics.” I did my work and got an A.
What made me think about my connection to this breaking news was an old SU t-shirt. I bought it from the college catalog in the early 1980’s, crammed into the back of a drawer, as I became too fat to wear it. It fits great now because I’ve lost 80 pounds. I’m thinking that UNC is not the only college padding their teams.
DAVE SAG’S BLUES PARTY WITH SPECIAL GUEST: Brian David Templeton, William Loosigian & Dave Mattacks @ The Rhumb Line 8:30 to 11:30
It’s He-Man Week™ as I drag in the limb-crunching behemoth of the blues: Mr. Brian Templeton. Last time he was here, severe shock and awe erupted on the dance floor and mere mortals (not you) quivered with trepidation at what might happen to their booty whilst under his spell. He’s a really big guy, physically and tonally. Makes me look like Barney Fife. He’s really a great frontman, singer and harpist, and a joy to work with. He’s bringing along Mr. Billy Loosigian, rocket-propelled guitarist and veteran of many an ear-exploding night on this same stage. He’ll be the one in the red cape. Range-finding co-ordinates supplied by the atomic clock, Mr. Dave Mattacks. I’ll be on base. hours: 8:30 till11:30, and, no, we’re not changing them anymore for the winter.
