Fred Knittal review
“Julie Rhodes is without a doubt one of the striking voices we’ve heard during a Folkadelphia Session. Sure, call her a powerhouse because there is certainly power – a brute, earthly force that jolts you up when she chooses to wield it. But let’s talk about the magnificent character of her voice, which is immediately charming, ear-catching, and totally malleable. Let Julie soothe your aching heart with a voice as smooth as butter, let her exfoliate the hurt away with that pumice stone singing, then let her drive you back the bottle with a voice that can get as gritty and raw as a gravel road swept up in a hurricane. Let us praise her passionate vocalizing and her soulful singing, which fit perfectly for songs that sit in the intersection between blues, R&B, rock, and folk. In less words, Julie Rhodes is a vocalist that makes you pay attention – are you listening yet?
Julie Rhodes’ Bound to Meet the Devil is her debut album and released this year, a true blues-rock affair, and well worth your time and money. For her in-studio session at WXPN, Julie, along with her band, stripped the song back just a little bit to reveal that dynamic and emotional core.”
Chris Martin review
Julie Rhodes – Bound to Meet the Devil
“From ice cream scooper to blues singer, Julie Rhodes’ music career is an incredible story. In a short amount of time she has taken the music world by storm with her debut album Bound to Meet the Devil recorded at historic FAME studios. With a big bold voice this New Englander has captured the sound, feel and soul of traditional Southern Blues music like few others. As she sings about bad relationships (“Your Key Won’t Unlock My Door”), untrustworthy people (“Grinnin at Your Face”) and heartbreak (“Hurricane”) you get the sense as if Julie has had experience in all. Songs like “Holes” and “Faith” are brought to life by her voluminous voice as she reaches into the depths of her soul. The song “In Your Garden” is the perfect cross section of Bound to Meet the Devil. Sultry guitar riffs meander through steady rhythms as Rhodes uses weeds in a garden as a metaphor for a relationship going bad. This is what the blues is all about. Bound to Meet the Devil is a solid album from start to finish. As Rhodes delivers tunes steeped in classic blues sounds her passion towards the music oozes from each word that leaves her mouth. You will be hooked from the first play and it just gets better with each listen.”

Dave Sag’s Blues Party tonight to host Diane Blue, Ricky “King” Russell and Ed Scheer 8:30pm 10.13.2016 There’s gonna be whole lotta shakin going on!

Diane Blue. She’s a fireball of intergalactic rocket fuel, and no fool, either. Watch flames erupt from her harmonica as she thrills you with her cantankerous systemic vibrosis! Watch mere ordinary world-famous vocalists cringe as she lets loose with her four dimensional uvula! You’ll need your Ridalin!

And she’s dragging in kicking and screaming two of your favorite (and mine!) mooseicians to tickle your brain stem. First, Mr. Ricky “King” Russell, mastermind of the Boston Blooze Scene, will be in the glitar chair ,safely fastened for that burning sensation. Then there’s “Mr.” Edd Scheer, our diaphanous yet protophonic swamp popper, on the skins. and me two, on base. Ommm…..
It just doesn’t get any better than this. I mean it!

Goes ZZZZZ, beep, wheee, uncle! But seriously, folks. Prof H is the real deal and since he’s driving all the way from New Bedford to sing in Portuguese for you, the least you could do is bring some kale and mebbe some chorizo.

Also, special guests Mari Martin and a dear friend from the west coast, George Friedenthal!
Mike DiBari, sizzling blowtorch of pain, will be on the guitar. Steevee Chaggaris, with that beautiful head of skin, will be on tubs.

Brian Templeton Tonight! Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ The Rhumb LIne 8:30pm 9.29.2016…There shall be lots of dancing!

It’s been a long time since Brian Templeton has graced our stage, so we’re getting out of wimp mode and into a strong belt of scotch. I’m putting my bass to the grindstone for a hone job to keep up with Mr. T’s ebullience. Brian’s the big guy with an acoustic guitar and a huge unmuffled glass pack voice. Every time he comes here it’s guaranteed to cure your IBS (irritable blues syndrome). See if you agree.
He’s draggin’ in that proton beam of a catarrist: Mr. Billy Loosigian and the Atomic Clock: Mr. David Mattacks. Ask your chirofractor if BT is right for you.

Wednesdays at the Rhumb Line – 7pm with Fly Amero ~ This week’s special guest: Chick Marston 9.28.2016

Dinner Specials Each Week!
Wednesday, September 28th – 7pm
Special Guest: CHICK MARSTON!

I was about 13 years old when I first met Chicklet Marston.
Jonathan Pope picked up a gang of us and drove to his house
in Rockport to see if Chick wanted to buy his metal-flake blue
Fender Stratocaster. Chick, a well-schooled acoustic guitarist
with a Berklee Conservatory background, had never played an
electric guitar in his life. He had no idea what to do with the
thing, fumbling all over it – and I was left wondering what all
the fuss was about with this supposedly “great player”. Well…
couple weeks go by, him playing his vintage 1936 Martin 0018,
and I find myself going to music school BIGTIME, soaking up
all I could from this brilliant, classic American folk & blues
picker. His thumb was a perfect metronome on the bass
patterns. The music he played was simple and poignant.
He went on to introduce an entire world of music to me that
changed my life and helped build my character as a more
well-rounded musician. Staple Singers. Doc Watson. Jelly
Roll Morton. Mississippi John Hurt. Odetta. On and on and
on. Chick Marston will forever be my mentor and hero. Most
people around here, I think, just don’t know what they got.
This is no shit. ~ Fly
