Emergency Alert

Posted on: January 26, 2011

Snow Emergency and Parking Ban

Effective at 9:00 pm tonight, Wednesday, January 26, the city has declared a snow emergency and parking ban on all city streets due to the arriving snow storm. As of 9:00 pm this evening until Thursday 12 noon, all vehicles are banned from parking on city streets. Violators of this emergency declaration are subject to ticketing and towing at the owners expense.

Residents may park in all school and municipal parking lots. If you park at a school, your vehicle must be removed by 6am tomorrow to allow for clearing of school parking lots.

All residents are reminded that they are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks adjacent to their property.

Your cooperation during this parking ban is necessary for efficient and safe snow plowing efforts.

To repeat, the city of Gloucester has issued a parking ban on all city streets as of 9:00 pm this evening. The ban shall be in effect until Thursday at 12 noon.

Coffee!

I wanted to share this cool little item for those of you who have a Keurig. I found this  reusable filter at Bed Bath and Beyond, but it’s cheaper at Amazon (minus shipping). You save tons of money not buying the individual cups. AND it’s eco-friendly as well!

Tomorrow I’ll have to remember to put the water in before I hit the “brew” button.

MASS HEALTH CARE LEADERS PARTICIPATE IN INNOVATIVE HEALTH CARE REFORM PANEL ON CAPE ANN

MASS HEALTH CARE LEADERS PARTICIPATE IN INNOVATIVE HEALTH CARE REFORM PANEL ON CAPE ANN

Northeast Health System CEO Ken Hanover and MHA President Lynn Nicholas discuss impacts of health care reform on area communities and families

(Gloucester, MA) – January 24, 2011 – Dozens of North Shore business and community leaders and residents attended a recent health care panel entitled ‘Health Care Reform: What does the Changing Landscape Mean to Me and My Family?’  The discussion featured Northeast Health System President and CEO Ken Hanover and Massachusetts Hospital Association President and CEO Lynn Nicholas.  It was moderated by Bob Hastings, Executive Director of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce.

The event, which took place on January 13th, was an opportunity to discuss the impact of health reform on Massachusetts and area North Shore hospitals and families. Hanover and Nicholas addressed a variety of topics relating to this issue, including the current hospital climate, industry trends, major issues driving the cost of health care, and potential future impacts of health care reform. During the event, which was held at Cruiseport Gloucester, attendees also had the opportunity to ask questions.

Lynn Nicholas has been a driving force in moving Massachusetts to the forefront of constructive health care reform. The Massachusetts Hospital Association President & CEO spotlighted for more than 70 business leaders and members of the Gloucester City Council the ramifications of the move from the current fee-for-service health care system to  a global or bundled payment reimbursement model.

A move to global payments would end the practice of paying health care providers for individual procedures, replacing it with a system that attaches a fixed price to the routine health care costs incurred by a patient over a given period of time.

“Massachusetts hospitals are committed to health care payment and delivery reform, and believe that greater use of global or bundled payments for care could result in more coordinated and integrated care, which could help bring down premiums,” Nicholas said. “But just as hospitals are not solely or even primarily responsible for cost increases, additional significant savings cannot be achieved solely through steps taken by those who provide care. Everyone involved – caregivers, insurers, legislators, government, business and consumers – must share in the solution.”

Nicholas has served on the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Task Force on Community Benefits, the Governor’s Special Commission on Healthcare Payment Reform and numerous other boards, advisory committees and philanthropic leadership committees. MHA is the leading advocacy group for hospitals and health systems across the state, representing more than 90 facilities.

Both Nicholas and Hanover told the crowd that it is imperative we move now to take steps that will eventually improve health care while controlling soaring costs.

“People hear and read about health care reform every day but its effects on area communities and families are not always well understood,” said Hanover.  “This event was an opportunity to bring the discussion close to home and discuss how the legislation impacts costs, our community hospitals, and the way we choose our health providers. We are proud to serve the North Shore, and we are always looking for ways to better utilize our resources so we can provide the best medical care to our communities.”

Get Your LOCAL Web Business Featured Here: Todays Feature – Give Your iPod Wood!

I am sure everyone is aware of ETSY, Ebay & others. Etsy is a great online marketplace site for everyone to sell hand crafted items, paintings, jewelry, etc. Here at GMG we love to feature local businesses in town, but what about folks who live local and market their products worldwide? Well, we feature them too. I am fond of this because most of the time they have another full time job and use this forum to feed their entrepreneurial spirit. If you live locally send us your ETSY site or other web business and we’ll feature it here on Monday at 5PM EST.

I also love ETSY because it is great for any husband who suffers from a condition known as ability to listen to their wife (over 50 million Americans suffer from this). With ETSY you only have to get one key word from the conversation and not hand over the credit card for her to purchase her own gift. Here is my example – Wife was interested in a Jewelry with kids initials. Searched initial jewelry and bang… I found Jeneri Jewelry. She built an amazing custom order for me at a price that is unmatched elsewhere. Wife was incredibly happy! Here is the first feature.

Dinsmore’s  Workshop – Wood Ipod Cases!

Web site: http://www.etsy.com/shop/mjdinsmore

Mr. Dinsmore works all day in Boston and then heads to his Hamilton home and down to his workshop. How does he take his frustration out after a long commute? By creating awesome 100% hand crafted iPod/iPhone cases & stands. In many of the pictures you can see his design sketches and he is currently  working on iPad stands. I think that is a great idea since the iPad is quickly becoming the showcase magazine rack replacement for your living room.

Taken from his site:

These cases and stands have been featured on television, print and popular websites. From CNN, Washington Post, Boston Weekly Dig  and in many popular websites — including: Gizmodo; Apartment Therapy; ThinkTechno; Mighty Goods and more. They make a great and unique present!

Dinsmore’s Workshop makes original wood iPod and iPhone cases and stands. Don’t choose imitators and copy cats! We use salvaged or sustainable harvested lumber for our eco-friendly products.

So check out MJDinsmore’s site and help support a local guy who was first in this line of high end custom iPod accessories. My social circles have allowed me to run into him from time to time and he is a wealth of knowledge, always smiling and is an all around good guy.

Send me (ryanpjm1@gmail.com) a link and some details on your local web business and we will post here.

Thanks – Patrick

Bravo To Kerry Byrne For Calling Out The Elitist Food Blogger Eco Food Nazis!

If you’ve read my reasoned responses to these bully Eco Food Labelers who use their pulpits to harm Fishermen without ever listening to any reasoned explanations that don’t fit with their incessant rantings to swear off our local fish despite our fishermen having paid the price with increased mesh sizes, a drastically reduced fleet and dramatically reduced codfish quota.  These sacrifices have led to huge improvements in sustainability and codfish biomass but don’t tell the eco labelers.  they don’t want to hear it.

Kerry Byrne sides with the Gloucester Fishermen over the elitist foodie bloggers in his Herald article.

Here are some of my past explanations that have gone unheard-

Could some one please explain?

Did You Know (Full Moon)

photos of full moon over Annisquam at sunset and seagull flying in front of full moon
Photos by E.J. Lefavour

A full moon is often thought of as an event of a full night’s duration. This is somewhat misleading, as the Moon seen from Earth is continuously becoming larger or smaller (though much too slowly to notice with the naked eye). Its absolute maximum size occurs at the moment expansion has stopped, and when graphed, its tangent slope is zero. For any given location, about half of these absolute maximum full moons will be potentially visible, as the other half occur during the day, when the full moon is below the horizon. Many almanacs list full moons not just by date, but by their exact time as well, usually in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)). Typical monthly calendars that include phases of the moon may be off by one day if intended for use in a different time zone.

Full Moons are traditionally associated with temporal insomnia, insanity (hence the terms lunacy and lunatic) and various “magical phenomena” such as lycanthropy. Psychologists, however, have found that there is no strong evidence for effects on human behavior around the time of a full moon.  They find that studies are generally not consistent, with some showing a positive effect and others showing a negative effect. In one instance, the 23 December 2000 issue of the British Medical Journal published two studies on dog bite admissions to hospitals in England and Australia. The study of the Bradford Royal Infirmary found that dog bites were twice as common during a full moon, whereas the study conducted by the public hospitals in Australia found that they were less likely.  (from Wikipedia)

This full moon was rising at sunset and was an unexpected bonus as I walked home from photographing the sunset at Cambridge Beach one evening.  Then, just as I zoomed in on the moon for a closup shot, this seagull flew in front of it.  I was not bitten by any dogs, nor did I encounter any werewolves or lunatics.

Did You Know (Rocky Neck)

collage of Rocky Neck photos
Photos by E.J. Lefavour

That Rocky Neck Art Colony is the oldest working art colony in the country, and has been luring artists to its picturesque shores for more than 150 years. Among others, these artists include Fitz Henry Lane in the 1840s, Emile Gruppe, who made The Neck his home and painted into the 1970s, as well as Childe Hassam, Milton Avery, Maurice Prendergast, Cecilia Beaux, John Sloan, Stuart Davis, Frank Duveneck, Nell Blaine, and Jane Peterson. Leonard Craske created “The Man at the Wheel,” Gloucester’s famous landmark sculpture, in his studio on the pier on Rocky Neck in the 1920s. Writers Louisa May Alcott, Rudyard Kipling, and others frequented The Neck.

Today the area is still home to many working artists and to galleries showing paintings in all media, as well as batik, photography, jewelry, prints, sculpture, ceramics, and fine gifts. In addition to viewing the arts, one may snack or dine at unique restaurants that feature fine food and fabulous views.

On this stark, frigid January day, I thought people might enjoy some colorful, warm Rocky Neck memories.

The trails of Gloucester and Rockport.

Yesterday was a pristine day to go cross-country skiing. With Dogtown and connections infiltrating out from the center of Cape Ann and throwing in Ravenswood there are very few places on Cape Ann that are not a short walk to a trail that goes on and on.

Evvy, hold on, I want to take a picture …

This is one of those trails that links up quarries down to a cove. There were train tracks here before the quarry bust of 1933. I ski along imagining the train Polyphemus as it lugged 40 ton blocks of granite through the woods to become the great granite bowls which sit in front of Union Station in our nation’s capital. Must have been quite a sight.

Old Fish House – Then and Now

The fish house in the top photo, taken in the early 1900’s on what was then called Curve Road, is the same location as in the bottom photo, now called River Road.  The shack is gone, but the granite pier and house remain.
