Looking At The Blog Today
I’m looking at the blog today and feel incredibly proud of this thing we’ve created.
I’ll stack it up against any other hyperlocal blog/website anywhere and excuse me if it sounds like boasting but I’m not sure that there is anything else that captures a community essence the way our staff does here at GMG.
Very proud and thankful to have the contributors we have. You guys are the best.

Did You Know? (Gloucester Education Foundation)
That the Gloucester Education Foundation’s Nancy Hochberg Higgins Arts Fund sponsors the district-wide Arts Festival held in May throughout downtown Gloucester, as well as after-school music and theatre, art supplies, development of GHS curriculum Art History of Cape Ann and more? Arts programming enriches the education of Gloucester Public School District students and fosters inspiration and creativity that are critical to the future of the community and our society. As an artist and creative person, I strongly believe in the need to provide arts related education for our youth, so am donating 20% of sales this season of my cards, 8×10 matted prints, Did You Know? Books and Cape Ann Treasure Boxes sold at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery to the Gloucester Education Foundation. Since opening on May 15, there is already $130 earmarked for GEF. I’d love to be able to send them $1,000 by the start of the school year, so come on by Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at 77 Rocky Neck and check out the lovely, cool and creative offerings (prices from $5 – $20), and help out GEF and the future of the arts in Gloucester.

Katherine McMillan Asks What Is The Story With The Pirate Looking Ships at Cruiseport?
Anyone have any info they want to share?
Don answers-
These ships are the NINA & PINTA, reproductions of the 15th century Caravelles that Columbus sailed across the Atlantic. They were built in Brazil using native tropical hardwoods and traditional tools of the period. They are owned by Morgan Sanger of the COLUMBUS FOUNDATION and are used for educational platforms. KITTERY, Maine — It must have felt like stepping back in time Monday afternoon for anyone standing on the banks of the Piscataqua River, as two replicas of 15th-century ships came into view.
The Niña and Pinta, modeled after ships of the same name sailed by Christopher Columbus when he came to the New World in 1492, sailed into Badger’s Island Marina East on Monday for a weeklong stay.
Tour the Niña and Pinta replicas
When: 9 a.m.-6 p.m., Tuesday, June 14 to Monday, June 20
Where: Badger’s Island Marina East.
From Interstate 95, take the Kittery traffic circle exit, and take State Road or Route 1 south toward Memorial Bridge and Portsmouth. No parking is available at the marina site.
Admission: $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $6 for children ages 5-16; free for children age 4 and under.
Parking:
Weekdays and Sunday, June 19:
First lot: Badger’s Island Marina West: With Memorial Bridge straight ahead, take a right next to Hebert Brothers; the ships will be on the left). Head to the parking lot at the end of the street where there is limited parking.
Second lot: If the first lot is filled, retrace your steps back down Route 1 north to the intersection of Route 1 and Walker Street, where there is an empty lot. Flaggers will direct you. Walk to the marina.
On Saturday June 18: First lot remains the same, although there is very limited parking there.
Second lot: The lot at the corner of Route 1 and Walker is being used that day for the Kittery Block Party and you will not be able to park there. Motorists are asked to please use the Island Marine Service lot on Route 236 heading toward South Berwick, just past the I-95 interchange on the right. A shuttle bus will bring visitors to the ships.
Capt. Kyle Friaut said the trip up from Connecticut, where they were last docked, was uneventful, with the crew stopping over in Gloucester, Mass., for a few days over the weekend.

Did You Know? (Sangria and Silpada Girl’s Night Out)
That on Wednesday, June 15th from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, E.J. will be hosting a Silpada Designs Jewelry party at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck, featuring beautiful, cool, funky, elegant, fun and affordable sterling silver jewelry by Silpada Designs? Come over and check out this great jewelry line (I personally love a bunch of their jewelry), have some home made sangria and munchies and check out the gallery. I don’t intend to carry jewelry in the gallery, but am thinking about having occasional evening jewelry trunk parties. If you are a jeweler and think you might like to feature your jewelry for an evening, email me at khanstudio@comcast.net. Also, if you plan to come to the Girl’s Night Out Jewelry Party, please email me and let me know, so I can be sure to make enough sangria. Did you know sangria is good for you? It has lots of fruit and red wine packed with antioxidants, for guiltfree imbibing.

Barbara Oliver Asks- Are You Innovating Through Social Media?
Social platforms can all work together to attract more eyeballs and iminds to what you do.
Okay…so you are a Gloucester artist, non profit or small biz. You regularly post on Facebook, you may even have tried your hand at Twitter and you may have a LinkedIn profile. The challenge is to integrate the use of these tools…making them all work together in the most efficient way…because your time is valuable, right?
What is the difference in the way you present yourself, your art, your cause or your service on each one of these platforms…because there is a difference you know.
They’re all about engagement, but what works on Facebook, where you more or less know your “friends”, won’t necessary fly well on Twitter where you are engaging in the “global conversation” to maximize your reach. And believe it: if you are presenting yourself well on Twitter, they will find you.
Building a successful social media presence, requires an understanding of how these different environments work, and plugging away at it…Your art, your mission, your business is worth it…right?
And of particular value to artists is the Arts Map. If you’re not on the Arts Map, you should be, and if you are, how are you leveraging your Arts Map presence?
Whether you are a novice or a little further along, you can learn something of value at “Social media for Artists and Non-profits” (and small biz too!) to be held at Ten Pound Studio, 1 Center St., Gloucester on Saturday, June 25, from 1 to 4 p.m. Bring a laptop if you have one (wifi available). Register at http://artsgloucester.com/bthevision/
Or email bthevision@gmail.com
About the presenters:
Barbara Oliver is a social media consultant and communications director for a non-profit. She also gives Facebook safety presentations for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Jo-Ann Castano is an artist, community cultural organizer and web developer. She has been active on the world wide web years before most of us had PC’s and Macs.
