USS OAK HILL (LSD 51) (originally LSD 7)

Our History

Originally designated as APM-7, USS OAK HILL (LSD 7) was laid down in Oakland, California and commissioned on January 5, 1944, with Commander Carl A. Peterson in command. The ship was designed to serve as a cargo and transport type amphibious ship and as a floating drydock.

Following shakedown and amphibious training off Southern California, OAK HILL engaged in rehearsals for “Operation Forager”, the thrust into the Marianas Islands. With tank bearing transports and troops of the 2nd Marine Division on board, she operated in the transport area off Saipan from June 15-22, 1944. On August 12, OAK HILL, with tanks and soldiers of the 710th Tank Battalion embarked, headed for the Palau Operation at Guadalcanal. Departing the Palaus on August 21, she proceeded to New Guinea, arriving at Humbolt Bay on August 29, to prepare for the invasion of the Philippines.

On October 20, 1944, OAK HILL stood off Leyte Gulf and launched units of the 1st Cavalry Division toward White Beach. For the next two months she carried reinforcements from New Guinea to Leyte. On Christmas Day, she arrived at Morotai to prepare for the Lingayen Gulf offensive. CLICK BELOW FOR MORE ON THE; U.S.S. Oak Hill

Cross Country Biker Finds Rocky Neck Thanks to Visitor’s Center

Richard Grant from New Orleans Represents.  Richard left New Orleans on June 15 on a cross-country motorcycle adventure, traveling to Robbinsville, NC, the Smokey Mountains, Shanandoah Valley, Pennsylvania back roads to the Pocanos and Catskills, Route 44 across Connecticut and wound up on Cape Ann.  The wonderful people at the Cape Ann Visitor Center sent him to Rocky Neck, where he found his way to Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery. Wendie Demuth and I really enjoyed meeting and talking with Richard, a fascinating, charming and adventurous fellow.  From here he heads to Maine, Canada and then to Wisconsin to visit family before returning to New Orleans.

Did You Know? (Steve and Deanna Furey)

That Steve and Deanna met and became sweethearts while attending Gloucester High School, and are still together 5 kids and 7 grandkids later?  They don’t look anywhere near old enough to have 7 grandkids, do they? They now live in Jacksonville, FL, but come back each year to visit.  Also, did you know that Deanna’s maternal great grandfather was Percy Wheeler, Mayor of Gloucester in the 1920’s, and that Steve’s Dad, John Furey, was the football coach for Gloucester High in the late 60’s and early 70’s?  Also, Deanna’s paternal great grandfather, Antonio Landoni, came here from Italy and became a stonecutter at the Lanesville Quarry.  And Deanna’s Uncle, Jack Sawyer who was the electrical inspector for Gloucester, lived in the Fitz Henry Lane house when he was a boy.  Steve and Deanna are also new subscribers to Good Morning Gloucester after meeting Joey yesterday at David Cox’s antique store on Main Street yesterday.  When it’s time for the GMG bug to bite you, it bites hard and repeatedly.  Two great new additions to the GMG family.

Seriously?

I’m thinking we should borrow some more money and make these places parks, because you know, we don’t have enough places for the public to access the water in Gloucester.

I mean if you take away the miles of beaches like Cressey’s, Good Harbor, Niles, Half Moon Beach, Pavilion Beach, Plum Cove Beach, Lane’s Cove, Wingersheek Beach ,the Back Shore and the Boulevard and the landings such as Cripple Cove, Gardiner Landing, Clay Cove, Oakes Cove, Ben Smith Playground, Fort Square Playground, Gus Foot Park, the State Fish Pier, there’s virtually no where at all for anyone to access the water.  It’s criminal the way the public in Gloucester is denied access to the waterfront.DSC03873

Taxes, we don’t need no stinking taxes from these properties developed, do we?  And we know that anyone intending to actually turn a profit on any of these properties and employ people we need to demonize because they are EVIL EVIL EVIL!!!!  Bah!

Let us make a resolution in 2011 that under no circumstances should any person who wants to actually create jobs and invest in these properties be allowed to.  We need to stay the course, because obviously you can see from the pictures  that that course has led to tremendous results!!!!

Let us support wholeheartedly the politicians that demonize any potential investors in these properties and put roadblocks to their redevelopment.

Give Us More Parks- More Non-Profits and More Places That Need To Be Supported By Donations From the Public!  Clearly all of the Non-Profits Around the City Could Use Some More Competition For the Private Dollars That Support Them.  The Judith Sargent Murray Museum, The Heritage Center, The Adventure, Ocean Alliance, They Could All Use Another Two Or Three Non-Profits Vying For The Same Dollars For Support.

St. Ann Summer Enrichment Program

Aquarium 6-21-11

Hi Joey,

Well, School’s out, but fun’s definitely in at St. Ann’s.  Yesterday we took a train into Boston and went to the New England Aquarium.  Did you know that they have a new shark and ray "touch tank"?  The kids loved to put their hands in the water and feel these creatures as they swam by.  We stopped and kicked off our shoes at the Rose Kennedy Greenway and played in the fountains on the way back to North Station.  If you haven’t been there in a while–GO!  What a perfect day out with kids.

We’re planning lots of great science, cooking, chemistry activities and field trips–later on today we’ll be doing a parachute experiment and tomorrow Mary Connolly, a local beekeeper is coming by to tell the kids all about bees and to do a fun activity. On Friday, after we make and can some pickles , we’ll have our resident astronomer, Ginny Renehan, do a great solar system activity with us.  Next week we’ll be baking bread, taking the train into the Boston’s Musuem of Science, among other things.  But first, the kids are clamoring for fishing–Gotta go!….  it’s going to be a great summer!  If any of your readers want in on the fun, check out the website.

Camera Porn

Have you heard of Lytro yet?- the new camera that captures “living pictures”. The way it works is it captures the entire field of light and in turn gives you the capability to choose what you want to be in focus. You can also share the image with other people and they can change the focus again themselves. It looks like it gives you the ability to change depth of field, without really knowing what you are doing. Pretty cool technology and I would love to see it in person, so I added myself to the waiting list. You can check out more images and info at http://www.Lytro.com
