2121 New Floral Beautification initiatives for downtown.  Generous Gardner’s was the recipient of the most recent award from the 100 Women Who Care Cape Ann organization.  Congrats to Generous  Gardeners!

The $11,500 donation will support a new hanging basket program on Main Street with self-watering baskets that can hold 2 gallons of water with each watering.  The group has also purchased self-watering inserts for the existing ground planters, with the addition of four new ground planters for the upper end of Main Street.  New watering tanks will allow volunteers to water the baskets from their vehicles.  The plan this year is to  install 27 baskets from Tonno to Sage Floral.

The donation is still not enough to cover the cost of the Beautification Initiatives for 2021.  We are asking our fellow business owners to help out with a donation to the program.  Gloucester and downtown are very  fortunate to have a group like Generous Gardner’s volunteering to make Gloucester more welcoming with the beauty of flowers.  Please contact Susan Kelly at  susan@generousgardeners.org to make a donation.

  1. Parson Street.  As you know Parson Street is a small street in between  the Dress Code and the Mermaid shop.  The city has won a grant to make Parson Street a more walking friendly, ADA approved entrance to Main Street from Rogers Street.  Plans call for new street paving and sidewalks, new lighting, and possible a pedestrian sign that lights up on Rogers Street.  Parson Street will become a pedestrian  connector from I4C2 parking and downtown.  Completion is expected before May 31 of 2021.  A great improvement for downtown.  Thank you to our Mayor and Jill Cahill from Community development for making the grant possible.
  1. The city is in the process of permitting outside dining once again this year.

If you have suggestions on how outdoor dining can be improved on Main Street now is the time to add to the conversation.

  1. Sidewalk Bazaar.  Hoping to have it once again in some form in August.  If the state opens up events like ours than we will move forward.  For now we are in a wait and see mode

Pandemic Baby Bust: Baby bust: US birth rate falls during pandemic

Despite spending more time at home due to the pandemic, the US is in the midst of a baby bust, not a baby boom.

US births have been falling for nearly a decade and 2019 saw the fewest births in 35 years, but the final numbers for 2020 could slip even lower.

An estimated 300,000 fewer babies are expected in 2021, according to a study by Brookings Institution think tank.

Amid extensive school and day care closures, as well as limits on public gatherings, millions of women have been forced to balance supervising and teaching their children with work and other responsibilities.

Surveys revealed that many couples are delaying pregnancies, having sex less often and want fewer children because of the pandemic and its economic costs, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

Generous Gardener Initiatives:
  • Our GrowBag initiative which we piloted in spring 2020 to help households overcome traditional barriers to growing healthy food that so many people face, including space constraints and homeownership. We are expanding the program this year following the success of the pilot program and finding new ways to also get kids involved through Grow Bag kits.
  • Our upcoming spring programming of vegetable gardening workshops
  • The public art project we are developing at Willowood Community Garden this year in partnership with Gloucester Housing Authority and Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce

Hopefully a segment on all the great growing that’s happening on Cape Ann this year will brighten some gray March days! 🙂

  • The cat would not sleep in the bedroom.
  • The cat has not had any accidents.
  • The cat does not scratch the door to be let outside.
  • The cat does certain things to communicate.

RAZE’ the Roof Cabaret!

A Fundraiser to benefit the Annsiquam Village Hall Roof Restoration

The Annisquam Village Hall is a building that is extremely near and dear to all of us- it is the Heart of our Community.  Since its construction in about 1828, the hall has watched the tide come and go nearly 140,000 times. It has witnessed six or more generations grow up nearby. It has hosted joy and sorrow, weddings, funerals, dances, political rallies, solemn and serious lectures, lighthearted frivolity, theater, and more. It has sheltered a sail loft, multiple stores, our local post office, our library, the Leonard Club, and other social organizations now lost to memory. Its owners have altered it, enlarged it, changed some of its windows and many of its doors. It is always just there, sort of like Squam Rock. After serving the village for nearly 200 years, it needs some help from the village.

Join us on Saturday, February 27, 7pm, as your friends and neighbors attempt to make you smile, laugh- maybe even cry (or roll your eyes)!  You will certainly see some familiar faces!

The suggested Donation for the event is $20, with Sponsorships available and Contributions most Welcome!  You will access the show on YouTube- more information available when you register on our website.
Please remember that all monies collected from the Cabaret, will go to the reconstruction fund for the roof of the Annisquam Village Hall.

I hope you will consider supporting us as we support the Annisquam Village Hall!  The Village Hall is our Village Home- Under this roof we build Community.

Thank you!

Back Stage at the Superbowl

Imagine being in college on 2007 and being asked to volunteer for an event helping build a stage.

Now fast forward to 14 years later and that first event you volunteered for has been listed as one of the “Greatest Super Bowl Halftime Performances of All Time” and you were part of it and witnessed it from backstage.

That is only the beginning of the story of our guest this week Lamarr Rollins! BSide and Lamarr have known each other for 10 years this month and she has been trying for 4 years to get him to come on the show, IT FINALLY HAPPENED!

Come take a journey with Bside and Lamarr on what it is like to be part of the Super Bowl halftime show, how to juggle a full time architect job and how to pull off a Halftime show in a Pandemic. Also Lamarr asks some of B’s burning questions she’s had over the years and expresses her loathing for Maroon 5.

Stick through some the rants as Lamarr drops behind the scene knowledge on us as well as talking about the family he’s come to know volunteering every year and how they are doing in the Pandemic era.

Super Bowl streaker didn’t get his money from the bet he placed:

According to Front Office Sports’ A.J. Perez, Andrade placed a $50,000 bet with Bovada, an offshore sports book, on a prop bet that someone would get on the field during the game.

Perez added that Bovada had a $1,000 betting limit placed on the prop bet, and Andrade later said that he told some friends about what he was planning to do and recommend that they submit a wager.

With the odds being +750, Andrade was slated to win $375,000 for his stunt. However, Bovada says that it would investigate each wager and void any of the streaker bets made by Andrade or any other person involved with the stunt, meaning the sports book would not pay the money.

Perez said one person who placed an $800 bet and won $6,000 was told he would not receive the money, and his Bovada account was closed.

Some Kind Of Heaven streaming on Amazon Prime – from Rotten Tomatoes: “With Some Kind of Heaven, first-time feature director Lance Oppenheim cracks the manicured facade of The Villages, America’s largest retirement community — a massive, self-contained utopia located in Central Florida. Behind the gates of this palm tree-lined fantasyland, Some Kind of Heaven invests in the dreams and desires of a small group of Villages residents — and one interloper — who are unable to find happiness within the community’s pre-packaged paradise. With strikingly composed cinematography, this candy-colored documentary offers a tender and surreal look at the never-ending quest for finding meaning and love in life’s final act.”
