Governor Maura Healey signed into law the most ambitious legislation in Massachusetts history to tackle the state’s greatest challenge – housing costs. The Affordable Homes Act and related initiatives will support the production, preservation and rehabilitation of more than 65,000 homes statewide over the next five years. It is the largest housing bond bill ever filed in Massachusetts
The Affordable Homes Act creates key policy initiatives, including allowing accessory dwelling units under 900 square feet by right on single-family lots. Often referred to as in-law apartments, accessory dwelling units can be attached or detached from a single-family home and often take shape as a basement or attic conversion, a cottage in a backyard or a bump-out addition to a home

With all of this these half rainy/half sunny days, rainbows seem to be popping up everywhere. I looked out my window in time to catch this double rainbow the other day. I wish the sky was more blue.

Maybe some of you have followed my travails with putting together the mini block Lego-style puffin that I recently purchased from Pauline’s Gifts on Essex Ave. This is the final result. He looks a little pixelated due to the teeny tiny mini blocks used to construct him: 443 of these according to the 31 steps of instructions! There was more than a little bit of swearing and searching on my knees for fallen pieces but we got there! I challenged my Facebook friends to guess where we would end up over/under on pieces at completion and I thought you all might be interested in the results. Drum roll…….there were 90 (!!) EXTRA pieces left over! I found that astonishing. Pauline has suggested I work on the lobster next and I think I’m going to take her up on it. This puffin will reside at 44 Main St. Open this week Thursday 1-5; Saturday 11-5 and Sunday 11-3. (Taking Friday off with company in town).

After a long year of waiting for the Perseid meteor shower to re-appear, it clearly paid off. I went for the “finger on the shutter-button” approach the other night. I stood still for 2 1/2 hrs. to try and capture a few of the flying fireballs shooting across us over Gloucester. This was the first one, and the best one I managed to capture. I had hundreds of “trigger” practice shots before this one, so I felt ready. Usually it’s a miss, but this one just seemed to happen just in time. It appears on the screen just like it looked to the eye, a big fire filled green flash! I shot this on a Sony EV Z1, with a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens. Exposure was set for 2 seconds, so you can imagine the nerves trying to snag a shot. You can see the amazing aurora that was happening that night on the right side as well, taken Aug. 12th, 12:08 am. The medeor is traveling left to right, the green is picked up as the tail.
