My View of Life on the Dock
These three caught my eye early the other morning.

The day many of us are awaiting is on the horizon! Tomorrow April 9 Lobsta Land on Causeway St. reopens for the season.

People here are focused on the short April scallop season, but spring continues in other ways too.

Details from Heidi Dallin for CAS:
“Cape Ann Symphony’s Musicians Unleashed Concert Series ushers in springtime with The Spring Refreshed Concert, on Sunday, April 12, 2026 at 3:00 PM at The Crowell Chapel, 3 Rosedale Avenue, Manchester-by-the-Sea. The ticket price for The Spring Refreshed Concert is $40. Call CAS at 978-281-0543 or go to www.capeannsymphony.org to purchase tickets. Premiering in 2019, The Cape Ann Symphony’s Musicians Unleashed Concert Series are small intimate chamber concerts performed by members of the Cape Ann Symphony and guest artists at unique performance venues on Cape Ann. The Musicians Unleashed Concerts have become a wonderfully popular series with an overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience response.
The Spring Refreshed Concert features classical woodwinds including flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn performing Barber, Beach, Barthe, Agay, Coleman and Arnold. The program ranges from Amy Beach’s serene and contemplative Pastorale to Malcolm Arnold’s Threes Shanties for Wind Quintet, a vibrant and witty reinterpretation of a sea shanty. The concert program also includes: Adrien Barthe’s charming and lyrical, Passacaille; Valerie Coleman’s powerful anthem, Umoja and Samuel Barber’s playful and moody, Summer Music.
“The Spring Refreshed Concert features joyful and moving music that signals Spring has arrived!,” says Barbara Cox, Director of Marketing on the CAS Board, “We are delighted to feature these exceptionally talented woodwind players performing in the beautiful Crowell Chapel. “
The musicians of Spring Refreshed are Cape Ann Symphony members: Principal Flute Stephanie Stathos; Principal Clarinet Bill Kirkley; Principal Oboe Izumi Sakamoto and Principal Horn Earl Powers. The Woodwind Quintet is completed by Symphony New Hampshire member Sally Merriman, Bassoon.”

Once again our community stepped up for the Left-Right-Center fundraiser at the Gloucester Elks. Over $28000 was raised to benefit the Lily Jean families with the amazing support of area businesses and individuals. We sincerely feel blessed by all the donations for the raffles and auction as well as cash donations. It was an amazing night. Thank you Gloucester Elks, John Jerome, Anthony Saputo and many many others including committee members Annie Rochon, Pam Parsons, and Linda Miller led by the incredible Dee and Steve Noble. There was a great deal of support all around. Bless this community and our fishing families.

The second I read this when it was announced I railed on about how bad it would be for small restaurants especially. You broke it down perfectly. For people grasping to make comparisons- look at what has happened locally when the big supermarkets started getting bought up and consolidated. Supermarkets consolidation happened with debt, debt costs money and that debt cost gets pushed to the consumer. When Supermarket competition was reduced because the supermarkets were getting bought up and without competition, it was even easier to push food prices up. Remember prices at Stop and Shop and Shaws before Market Basket came to town? If this happens to the food supply chain for restaurants, their food costs will go up and they’ll have to raise menu prices or squeeze their already thin margins. This is a nightmare for restaurants and restaurant patrons.
