FANTASTIC ORGANIC NORTH SHORE VEGGIE AND FLOWER FARM CEDAR ROCK GARDENS IS ROCKIN!

Cedar Rock Gardens Sign Kim SmithCedar Rock Gardens is an 18.5 acre farm conveniently located at 299 Concord Street, in Gloucester, a few short miles off Route 128. Plants and produce grown only at Cedar Rock Gardens are sold here, with a wide offering of organic veggies, herbs, and gorgeous flowers.

Elise Jillson Cedar Rock Gardens Kim SmithYou may recognize co-owners Elise Jillson and Tucker Smith from the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market. Operating retail sales at the farm is a first this year.

Cedar Rock Gardens Kim SmithThe welcoming handmade sign sets the scene. A modern farm, with its focus on organic practices, but the setting is pure old-time farm charm. Rambling stone walls delineate the fields of flowers, trays of seedlings are tucked under gnarled ancient apple trees, and an equally as distinguished catalpa tree grows alongside the drive as you enter the garden.Flower Field Cedar Rock Gardens Kim Smith

Elise and Tucker have many combined years of experience in organic farming. Read more about the two here. Opening the farm to the public is a new step for Cedar Rock Gardens in their growing business. I can’t wait to see what they’ll be offering in plants, as well as cut flowers, throughout the season (think peonies, zinnias, and sunflowers, to name only a few!). Stop in and say hello to Elise and Tucker and pick up your seedlings today!

Plant Nursery Hours: 8am to 5pm Friday, Saturday, Monday, and Tuesday, and 9am to 3pm Sunday.

Jefff Weaver Mural Gloucester -2 detail c Kim SmithI just can’t tell you how exciting it was to see the fine restoration of the Jeff Weaver mural at AJ’s at the Harbor. We haven’t even had a chance to try the restaurant, but they get my vote for Good Eggs of the week for taking care to restore this original Gloucester painting by unquestionably one of Gloucester’s finest painters.

Thank you AJ’s! Best wishes with your new restaurant!Jefff Weaver Mural Gloucester -3 detail c Kim SmithJefff Weaver Mural Gloucester c Kim Smith

WE HAVE AWESOME NEWS!!! Our Awesome Gloucester grant proposal for the Bacheler Civil War Coat has made it to the semi-finals! Now it’s up to our 3-5 minute pitch next Monday 7PM at the Gloucester House to bring it home!! Three other good projects will also try.

Awesome Gloucester wrote:“we encourage you to invite as many of your friends, family, and supporters as possible. The more the merrier!”

That’s where you come in. We know it’s school vacation and some might have plans. If you can come, we’ll be ecstatic. Let us know! Either way, you’re all part of what everybody has worked towards for the coat. It would be impossible without you guys. Thank you for everything. If we get this, we’ve done it! The coat will be fixed, mounted and displayed!

Sincerely,

Charles and George

So excited and looking forward to coming George and Charles. Congratulations!!!

BREAKING NEWS: SAVE OUR SHORES HAS RAISED $84,000.00!!! ONLY 16,000. TO GO

BREAKING NEWS: SAVE OUR SHORES HAS RAISED $84,000.00!!!

To our devoted supporters:

Just $16,000 more needed!!

We are excited to be so near our goal of $100,000 needed to purchase four parcels of land on Atlantic Road, and pay for legal and closing costs.

As of today, we estimate our total donations and pledges at $84,000.

A short time ago, one of the most beautiful places in New England was threatened with massive construction and irretrievable damage. We’re just as amazed as each of you that this prized land and viewscape will belong to all of us.  Without the support of each and every one of our more than 400 donors, this would not be possible.

Thank you for your continued support and for showing up at all of those meetings.

Boston Globe complimenting Gloucester’s gorgeous WPA era murals

Boston_Globe_murals

Did you see? Wonderful John McElhenny’s My View article to the Gloucester Daily Times thanking great work by the CPA committee and residents? And more this week in the Boston Globe? Nice to be the successful model. “In Gloucester, residents have leveraged funding for 80 units of affordable elderly housing in an old grammar school, replaced historic lead glass windows at the Cape Ann Museum, and restored Depression-era WPA murals at City Hall.”  Read more of the Boston Globe article here

Since April is National Poetry month it seems extra fitting to pause on the Charles Allan Winter mural–which by the way is notoriously difficult to photograph in that site. Nice job by photographer Pat Greenhouse / Boston Globe.

In 1931, he and his wife Alice Beach Winter, also a successful artist, came to live in Gloucester year round having spent summers since 1914 and building their Mt. Pleasant studio  in 1922.  Poetry was the third mural Winter completed in Gloucester.
