DENOVO QUARTET
PLAYS IN ANNISQUAM
The Annisquam Village Church concert season continues on Saturday, August 3 at 7:30 p.m. with chamber music of Holbrook Robinson, played by the Denovo Quartet.
Holbrook RobinsonRobinson has close ties with Annisquam from his childhood summers there. The late Kira Robinson, the composer’s mother, emigrated to the U.S. during the Russian Revolution. The French-speaking group that she started upon her retirement in 1974 from Adelphi University still meets weekly in Annisquam. Following in the academic footsteps of his parents, Robinson is professor of French at Northeastern University with a deep passion for music. He is a self-taught composer, strongly influenced by (mostly tonal) works in both romantic and modern repertoire that have coherence and breadth.

Robinson’s quartets reflect his French propensities as suggested by the titles of his works: Accélerations, Célébrations, Langoureux Vertige, etc.. Jakov Gubanov, one of the last private students of Dmitri Shostakovich, writes of Robinson’s “individual style” and his “embrace of many noble traditions”. . . . “Even though the music language leans on tonal, mostly diatonic idiom, the music sounds quite contemporary. There are many features, so attractive to both a professional and a common listener: rich and diverse texture with intensive polyphonic work, bright thematic ideas, convincing structure, and – what is most important – a strong spiritual message in each composition. I am very happy that inspiration never abandons you and that you have such responsive artists performing your works.”

Michael Hustedde, violin

Daniel Dickson, cello
Since their debut at the Deer Valley Music Festival in 2015, the Denovo Quartet has quickly established a creative presence in the greater Boston area as sought-after performers and collaborators. Mentored by the Muir Quartet at Boston University, Denovo Quartet is known for their robust sound and energetic interpretations and has been featured on numerous recital series performing both classic and contemporary repertoire. Recent engagements include performances at the Alcyon Chamber Music Series, Tower Hill Botanic Garden, Brookline Library, and Parish Center for the Arts. While remaining grounded in the standard quartet canon, Denovo’s curiosities also extend to contemporary music, where they have an extensive background performing and recording new works. They were fortunate to work with Joan Tower at the Deer Valley Music Festival in the summer of 2015 and premiered Douglas Friedman’s “The Pilgrim,” which has since inspired them to seek out exciting new music. New commissions include recording quartets by Northeastern University professor Holbrook Robinson as well as current Northeastern University composition students. The quartet members come from Ohio, Kentucky, South Carolina, and Washington. Individually, they have performed across the US and on tours to China, Russia, Europe, South America, and Canada. They have played in master classes for such renowned musicians as William Preucil, Stephen Clapp, Christian Tetzlaff, Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, Midori, and for the Emerson, Tokyo, Arianna, JACK, and Atrium Quartets. Each member of Denovo holds a graduate music performance degree from Boston University. All four freelance and teach privately in the greater Boston area.
The concert takes place in the newly renovated sanctuary of the historic Annisquam Village Church, renowned for its resonant acoustics and classic New England simplicity. All are welcome to a reception following the concert in the Village Church Cove Room.

SMOKY CABARET CONCERT BY ‘WHAT TIME IS IT, MR. FOX?’
August 2 free soul and rock concert on Meetinghouse Green
Gloucester residents and visitors are in for a total treat on Friday, August 2, at the fifth free concert of Cape Ann’s smoky and exuberant band ‘What Time Is it, Mr. Fox? ‘ at Meetinghouse Green, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM.
Led by the gender-defying voice of singer-songwriter 3rian King. ‘What Time Is It, Mr. Fox’ will pack a punch of emotional authenticity and originality with their songs that marry lyrical imagery and theatricality with cinematic sensibility. Themes of love, spirituality, sexuality and identity permeate their songs and performance. (Highly recommended: go see the group’s multimedia animated musical, ‘Medusa: Reclaiming the Myth’ at the Charles Hayden Planetarium, Museum of Science, August 22.)
Named after a Victorian children’s game, ‘What Time Is it, Mr. Fox?’ time-travels from 1960s New Orleans soul, to the minstrels of Medieval France, and then lands in the Tin Pan Alley era of NYC. The band began as a duo in 2004, featuring vocalist 3rian King and trumpeter Nathan Cohen, and quickly became a fixture of Boston’s underground cabaret scene, blending music with elements of circus, dance and performance art. In 2014 the band re-formed as a 5-piece ensemble, including Dennis Monagle on drums, Renee Dupuis on voice, keys and melodica, and Joe Cardoza on upright bass, along with the original founders, Nathan Cohen and 3rian King. The band collaborates with acclaimed filmmaker and Harvard Professor, Ruth Lingford, with extraordinary creative results. Their song ‘The Ladies’ Tree’ was turned into an animated short, and ‘Medusa’ also features Lingford’s zany and spectacular animations.
Catch 3rian King and his band ‘What Time Is It Mr. Fox?’ as their star rises, and while they still perform in Gloucester and Cape Ann.
Each week Music on Meetinghouse Green partners with a different non-profit organization to raise awareness for the services they provide to the local community. At the August 2 concert, the audience is invited to contribute a freewill donation to Maritime Gloucester, a non-profit organization providing a maritime museum, sea pocket aquarium, working waterfront, and maritime education to all ages, in Gloucester. Common Crow will provide fresh natural food for concert-goers.
The Gloucester Meetinghouse, home of the Unitarian Universalist Church, is located at the corner of Church and Middle Streets. The concert is handicapped accessible. Event parking is available on the green and at additional parking lots nearby in the Historic District. Folding chairs will be provided or bring your own beach chair. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse.

Building History and the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation:
Completed in 1806 for the first Universalist Church in America, the grand Federal Style, 600-seat Meetinghouse with a 110’ lantern steeple and Paul Revere Bell is a jewel in the heart of the Historic District. Now well into its third century serving the people of Cape Ann, its history is steeped in the establishment of religious freedom in Massachusetts and the Constitutional separation of church and state. Home of the present-day Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church and host to The Grace Center, the building is alive with activities like concerts, family-friendly entertainment, events, symposia and civic celebrations.
The Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit modeled upon the Old North Foundation in relation to Boston’s famous Old North Church. Its mission is to preserve the landmark building as a welcoming civic hub, premiere entertainment venue, and family-friendly community action center. The ongoing preservation of the building seeks to combine the highest standard of restoration and energy conservation techniques.
Thanks to support from state, municipal and philanthropic grants plus gifts from private individuals the Meetinghouse is accessible to persons with disabilities, is protected by a fire-sprinkler & monitoring system augmented by extensive fire-proof thermal insulation, and has achieved a ‘net-zero’ building carbon footprint with the help of Reforest the Tropics and its climate-change initiative TownGreen/2025.
