GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY HITS A HOME RUN WITH THE LAST SCHWARTZ!

GSCLastSchwartz0010The Last Schwartz, in its New England premiere at Gloucester Stage, introduces us to the Schwartz siblings—Nora, Ben, Gene, and Simon—who have inherited the family home from their parents. Along with Bonnie, Ben’s wife, they meet at the house over a weekend. Tension fills the air as Nora is determined to keep the home while Ben, a businessman, wants to sell it. Meanwhile, Simon, who is autistic, spends his time staring into a telescope and dreaming about space travel.

Into this powder keg comes Gene and his pot-smoking California wild child girlfriend Kia. Like a heat-seeking missile, Kia explodes the delicate balance that the siblings have managed to construct, ripping the lid off passions long suppressed by family decorum and the stern order that Norma, the oldest of the Schwartz siblings, has maintained during the year since their father’s death. Secrets are revealed, promises broken, and conflicts erupt as the four Schwartz siblings, joined by Kia and Bonnie, struggle to find a way forward.

At a pace that feels like you’re on a roller coaster, playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer delivers a potent blend of laughs and bitter revelations. The ensemble cast is uniformly brilliant, creating vivid characters that feel like people you know and may even be part of your own family. With expert direction by Paula Plum, evocative lighting design, and a set that looks exactly like your grandparents’ musty old house, The Last Schwartz delivers comedy and heartbreak that’s perfect for a midsummer night. Run, don’t walk, to the Gloucester Stage Company to be a part of this delightful and touching experience.

Starring Brianne Beatrice (Bonnie), Andrea Goldman (Kia), Gabriel Kuttner (Herb), Paul Melendy (Simon), Glen Moore Gene, and Veronica Anaxtasio Wiseman (Norma.)

Now through July 30. For more information and to purchase tickets visit the Gloucester Stage Company website here.

Magnolia Pier Debate Part 2 – Check out this video from 4 years ago — NO Barricades=Safer and More Fun!

4 years ago, I filmed people of all ages (from 5 years old to grandpa) jumping off Magnolia pier, with at least 3 people jumping for the first time — all the while there’s a game of “Pier Tag” going on too.  Pier Tag is impossible when the barricades are up. It’s time for the bureaucrats to man-or-woman-up, stop worrying so much about getting sued and remove the barricades to encourage kids, teens, adults, and grandparents to gather together in a safe, healthy place for some summer fun!  While you’re at it, put the ladders back too. Joey – you think we should have a pole about this?

MYSTERY OF THE MISSING FAMILY PAINTING

Nina Goodick writes,

Hi Kim:

I was wondering if you would post this portrait painting on GMG.

It is a painting of our grandfather, Rosario Testaverde, painting by Armand Sindoni.

It went missing about 10 years when a family member moved.

The family would very much like to get it back again if possible.

Thanks

Nina (Testaverde) Goodick

Awesome video of Pier Jumping at Magnolia Pier

For some odd reason, somebody keeps barricading the kids’ favorite spot. This is creating an unsafe situation.  Generations of young children have learned to jump off the pier by being able to jump without having to climb the railing, which makes it a lot harder to learn — and way more scary too.  Whomever keeps barricading the jump spot, please remove the barricades.  Thanks!

Congratulations to Cape Ann TV for Winning Two National Video Awards!!

Cape Ann TV reeled in two first place awards in the Hometown Media Award Contest.

The two winning videos are Gloucester’s Giant Lobster Trap Christmas Tree & Menorah, and Behind the Scenes at Gloucester Election Night 2015.

Gloucester’s Giant Lobster Trap Christmas Tree & Menorah was entered in the Access Center Professional Division and won in the Community Events-General category. The program was produced by Cape Ann TV staff members, Lisa Smith and Rebecca Tober and was narrated by Cape Ann TV intern, Jill Wach. The ten-minute video profiled the people who created the Lobster Trap Tree on Main Street and the Menorah at the Temple Ahavat Achim, and the importance of these structures to the Cape Ann community.

Behind the Scenes at Gloucester Election Night 2015 was entered in the Independent Producer division and won in the Democracy in Action category. Matt Morris created this short, two-minute video. The video creatively shows the hustle and bustle at City Hall on election night and the live election coverage by Cape Ann TV. Matt Morris won a Hometown Media Award last year for his Awesome Gloucester series. Video link to Behind the Scenes at Gloucester Election Night 2015

The Hometown Media Awards is a national contest, sponsored by the Alliance for Community Media, that honors and promotes community media and local cable programs that are distributed on community access cable television channels. Charles and George Civil War Coat News Update

image002 (2)Hi Everybody!

We thought you’d like to read about Breaking news: the coat is a positive model!

Stories about the poll for the display

1) Last night the  Bay State Banner published a second article about the Bacheler Civil War coat helping spread the word about the poll on GMG (which will help decide how the coat is displayed). Jule wrote a great article. You can share it a bunch of ways from their website.

2) America’s Civil War Magazine (historynet.com) had the coat in their FIELD NOTES section, “Coat Tales”. They sent us an advance copy of the September issue. It comes out bi-monthly and they said it’s for sale at Barnes and Noble. The article compares Bacheler’s coat to another Civil War era coat. It’s really interesting.

The White House mailed back photographs and a note from the President. We believe it’s something that is sent out to kids. It doesn’t mention the Bacheler coat or Gloucester. We’ll scan that later.

Thank you Dr. Powers for contributing to the display and adding another Gloucester business in to the support.

Sincerely

Charles + George

New Spaces/Od Places was the title of last evening’s Design/Build lecture. The lecture was given by Deborah Epstein and Maryann Thompson, two of the area’s leading architects, and was the second in a series that is part of the Design/Build: The Drawings of Philips and Holloran, Architects exhibit currently on display at the Cape Ann Museum. Deborah Epstein designed the stunning Shalin Liu and Maryann Thompson the beautiful Temple Ahavat Achim. The lecture focused on the creative process and challenges of designing new public buildings in an area surrounded by older buildings.

Save the date for the third and final lecture in the Design/Build series on the life and accomplishments of Eleanor Raymond, presented by documentary filmmaker Lyda Kuth. Raymond was a pioneering woman in the field of architecture during the 20th century. In 1948, she designed one of the first successful solar houses, the “Dover Sun House,” and is credited with designing the first Northeastern regional modernist home (1931), predating by six years the Walter Gropius House in Lincoln. DOG OWNER AND TRASH TROUBLE AT GOOD HARBOR BEACH PART TWO

Crow battle copyright Kim SmithDear Friends,

A reminder that no dogs are allowed on Good Harbor Beach during the summer and particularly while the Piping Plovers are nesting. It truly is a matter of life and death for these rare and endangered tender shorebirds. The past several mornings there have been dogs on GHB, off leash. Although the Plovers nest is at the edge of the dune, once they have hatched, the tiny nestlings will soon be going to the water’s edge to feed. They will most assuredly be squished by an exuberant pooch if owners do not keep their dogs off the beach. Please let your house guests, friends, neighbors, and family know about these rare creatures calling Good Harbor Beach home for the summer, and why it is so vitally important to keep dogs off the beach.

Yes, I took photos of the scofflaws, but do not want to post another batch. I’d rather we spend the time helping people understand why, and trying to prevent further incidences.

Piping Plover with garbage plastic bottle pollution copyright Kim SmithOf far greater concern is the fact that last night some persons were picnicking in the Plover’s cordoned off area. The thoughtless ones buried their trash in the sand, but left some remaining on top. At daybreak several crows, I am sure drawn by the brightly colored Doritos bag, began digging in the sand. They were soon joined by a dozen or so crow family members, where a great noisy battle ensued over the bones and garbage. The combat took place in the Plover’s plot, causing the nesting Plover extreme distress. She left the nest, trying all her tricks to distract the crows from the eggs, and was really quite brave in fending them off, all the while calling frantically to her mate. The battle lines were coming closer and closer to the Plover nest.

Why was she so alarmed? Because crows (and gulls) eat Piping Plover eggs!

As a filmmaker I try very hard not to intervene in wildlife behaviors while filming, I stand as still as a stone and the creatures soon forget about me and go about their normal business. However, in this case, the garbage strewn about in the Plover’s plot was human created and needed human intervention. I chased the crows out of the area and within a few moments, the Plovers had resumed their morning routine.Crow battle -2copyright Kim Smith

Some folks are under the misguided notion that it is a good thing to bury trash, even burying glass bottles. Tony and Murray, our awesome GHB DPW crew, told me that burying bottles is the worst thing people do because as the clean up tractor unwittingly is driven over the hidden garbage, bottles break, and then there is broken glass everywhere. Burying food and bones and plastic is nearly as bad. The seagulls and crows inevitably find the trash, drag it all across the beach, and then the plastic ends up in the ocean. If there weren’t so much nightly trash left on the beach, we wouldn’t have nearly as many crows, and the shorebirds would be far safer.

Please, no dogs and no trash on our beautiful beach. Thank you. The Piping Plovers thank you too.Crow feeding copyright Kim Smith

DEBORAH ZOE LAUFER & PAULA PLUM REUNITE FOR NEW ENGLAND PREMIERE OF THE LAST SCHWARTZ AT GLOUCESTER STAGE COMPANY

unnamedGloucester Stage Company continues its 37th season of professional theater on Cape Ann with the New England premiere of Deborah Zoe Laufer’s The Last Schwartz opening on July 7 and running through July 30 at 267 East Main Street, Gloucester, MA., A funny and provocative look at family life, The Last Schwartz takes place in the Catskills as the Schwartz family gathers on the one year anniversary of their father’s passing. Playwright Deborah Zoe Laufer made her Gloucester Stage debut during the 2015 season with Out of Sterno, which earned high critical acclaim and audience accolades during its smash hit GSC run. The Last Schwartz reunites Laufer with GSC Out of Sterno director Paula Plum. An award winning actress and GSC favorite, Plum returns to stage Laufer’s comic drama spiced with intrigue featuring a cast including returning GSC actors Brianne Beatrice and Paul Melendy, and GSC newcomers Andrea Goldman, Gabriel Kuttner, Glen Moore and Veronica Anastasio Wiseman.

Lynn native actress and director Paula Plum was last seen on the GSC stage in 2014’s Auld Lang Syne opposite her husband Richard Snee. Her GSC directing credits include Out of Sterno and I’m Not Rappaport. Ms. Plum is a founding member of Actors’ Shakespeare Project. She has been Artistic Director of WGBH’s A Christmas Celtic Sojourn since its inception in 2003. Other directing credits include Macbeth and School for Scandal with Actors’ Shakespeare Project; Steel Magnolias at Stoneham Theatre; Jake’s Womenat Merrimack Repertory Theatre; Baltimore Waltz at Lyric Stage; The Lady and the Clarinet at New Ehrlich Theatre; Lone Star and Laundry & Bourbonwith Back Alley Theatre; Tell Me On A Sunday at Stuart St. Theatre; andRomeo and Juliet with Happy Medium Theatre. As the 2009 recipient of the Fox Actor Fellowship, awarded to five actors nationwide, Ms. Plum conducted a workshop at her host theatre, SpeakEasy Stage, entitled Handling the Hot Moments, exploring the ways actors negotiate intimacy on stage. Her article of the same title was published in the October 2011 issue of American Theatre Magazine. While she is best known to GSC audiences as an actress, Ms. Plum is also a playwright, teacher and acting coach. Her most recent play, What Lips My Lips Have Kissed, explores the passions and peccadilloes of poet Edna St. Vincent Millay. Ms. Plum is the recipient of the Elliot Norton Award for Sustained Excellence, five IRNE awards, two Elliot Norton Awards for Best Actress, and was the 2003 Distinguished Alumna of Boston University’s College of Fine Arts.
