Former GHS athletes Gilbert Brown and Michael Tomaino are two of four from their class at Gloucester that have been selected to be captains of their football teams at the college level this year. That is truly unbelievable! The other two are Jordan Shairs at Curry and Chris Unis at Merrimac. I have no knowledge of this ever happening before and all these young men, along with their parents and former coaches should be proud of what they have accomplished.

Daybreak Death Wish
Look at what I came upon last Tuesday morning while filming the wildlife at the footbridge end of Good Harbor Beach. The kitesurfing appeared death defying, particularly from where I was standing far down the beach; one kitesurfer especially seemed precariously close to Salt Island.
I would have loved to stay and continue photographing the three beautiful aerial/marine acrobats but I had been filming until the last possible moment and had to hurry off to work. The action that I did catch a glimpse of was simply stunning.

Cape Ann Youth Hockey, along with some folks named the Boston Bruins, pulled off a fantastic event yesterday afternoon….all in the name of the Open Door Food Pantry. The Boston Bruins Street Brigade Clinic gave about 50 kids the opportunity to participate in some street hockey games, meet Blades (the Bruins mascot), and receive gifts from the Boston Bruins. In return, Cape Ann Youth Hockey and the Bruins simply asked that participants make a donation to the incredibly worthy Open Door Food Pantry. A win-win!
Another example of great things happening on any given day within our community!
A huge thanks to all of those involved! It is never too late to make a donation! Please consider.

Gloucester Writers Center and the RAPHA SUPER CROSS GLOUCESTER sponsor presentation by author Lorenz J. Finison on “Boston’s Cycling Craze, 1880-1900.
September 27th, 2014, 7:30 PM
Cultural Center of Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, Gloucester
There will be a presentation and book signing by Lorenz J. Finison, founding member of Cycling through History and author of Boston’s Cycling Craze, 1880-1900 on Saturday evening at 7:30 at the Cultural Center of Rocky Neck. The event will follow the Pro Cyclocross Race held Saturday at Stage Fort Park. Finison explores the rise of Boston Cycling through the lives of several participants, including Kittie Knox, a bi-racial twenty year-old seamstress: Mary Sargent Hopkins, publisher of the Wheelwoman; and Abbot Bassett, a vocal cycling advocate for forty years. Finison reveals the challenges facing these riders in a time of segregation, increased immigration, and debates about the rights of women.
Fro 1877 to 1896, the popularity of bicycles increased exponentially, and Boston was in on it from the start. The Boston Bicycle Club was the first in the nation and the city’s cyclists formed the nucleus of a new national organization the League of American Wheelmen. Massachusetts had the largest per capital membership in the league in the 1890s and the largest percentage of women members.
There will be a suggested donation of $10.00,. $5.00 for students with proceeds benefitting GWC community education programs. As always at GWC events no one will be turned away for lack of funds. For more information go to gloucesterwriters.org.

Bruins Street Brigade hits Cape Ann Youth Hockey!
Well, we’re back to school and that can only mean one thing…we’ll soon be back to the hockey rink too! Soon, meaning next week.
I’ve been known to complain about the cold, crazy hours at the rink, but…between you and me…I wouldn’t have it any other way! My boys love the game and being a part of Cape Ann Youth Hockey has been a fantastic experience for us all.
For any of you fellow hockey families, don’t forget about this great event! A win-win for sure. A win for the kids and a win for the Open Door Food Pantry who will receive donations from all registered players! Check out the link below for much more information! See you there!
