Window Shopping in Rockport

The day after Santa the daughter and I were checking out Dock Square for leftover marshmallows, (none found), and stopped into Toad Hall. Overheard a conversation about “Dogtown: Death and Enchatment in a New England Ghost Town”. “It’s getting good reviews”, so decided to buy it for a Christmas present.

Two shots of art in the windows: If anyone still needs to get me something this glass lobster pot buoy would look nice in my front window. Maybe after I no longer have teenagers throwing footballs around.

The attack of the giant painter and giant baseball player made us laugh. Tired of giving the same old painted harbor scene or carved model of a sailboat? Get Grandma a giant house painter attacking the town. I forgot to write down the name of the store. This can be a modified “Whazzat?” First person to post the name of the store can buy me the glass buoy.

Santa Visits Rockport

This past Saturday was not fit for man or beast to be out on T-Wharf in Rockport but plenty of small children and Santa himself braved the cold raw wind to light the Rockport Christmas tree in Dock Square.

With Capt. Bill Lee at the wheel, the Ocean Reporter sweeps past T Wharf. A large contingent of children (not shown, I was freezing and my camera as you can see was getting pelted in the rain) were screaming “IT’S SANTA!!”

Harbormasters Scott Story and Rosemary Lesh expertly coax some kayakers (are they nuts? It’s freezing!) out of the way so the Ocean Reporter can pull up to Motif #1.

Santa gingerly disembarks. The crowd is hiding from the wind behind the Fudgery.

Santa asks if everyone has been nice. There were no naughty children out in this weather.

Two Rockport police officers keep a wary eye on me while I chase down Santa to make sure he got my list. Yes, and he had checked it twice this time.

Santa buckling up to the Rockport Fire Truck for a ride back to his sleigh.

After Santa was gone there were still cookies and hot chocolate in Dock Square before everyone got back to Christmas shopping on Bearskin Neck. This GMG cub reporter quickly found a hot toddy.

Christmas Presents

Photos of Santa in Rockport will have to wait until tomorrow. Still warming up as it was blowing and raw but I got a few action shots.

But while we were waiting for Santa we went to Passports for a great “Chef’s Burger” and then my daughter and I stopped in at Bananas because Joey had posted a photo of their martini shakers. My daugther wisely got me a shaker for Christmas and my son (still in college) although he did not know it got me some martini glasses.

I have such smart children. I didn’t make it out of there before buying three pairs of sunglasses and a nice worn in pair of bluejeans.

Bananas, 78 Main Street, Gloucester. That shaker is from the 1930s and quite economical.

Santa Arrives Saturday in Rockport!!!

Just one day left. How will the kids get to sleep tonight?

Checking SANTA TIMER.

Santa rounds Bearskin Neck at 3:45PM Saturday. He then offloads at the Tuna Wharf (that’s the pier with the Fudgery. I like to say Fudgery.) Santa then gets on an old Fire Truck (have you seen the youtube of the baby saying Fire Truck?) for a quick ride to Dock Square.

Santa comes up from Bearskin Neck on the left and the tree that he lights is right in the middle of Dock Square at 4PM. Boy, I need to update my photos which I will tomorrow. I will have an orange jester’s hat on just like Sean’s (but will not be wearing a jockstrap) and my daughter will have a Santa hat on. We will be hanging out at the hot chocolate and cookies or saying hello to the harbormasters Scott Story and Rosemary Lesch who will have escorted Santa’s boat into the harbor.

Photos posted to GMG no later than Tuesday at my normal time slot at 2PM. If you have never seen this you have to come down. I witnessed this event for the first time last year. Even the Grinch’s cold cold heart would melt by the sight of dozens of small children jumping up and down screaming, “IT’S SANTA, IT’S SANTA!!!” Mine was warmed and then I started screaming “IT’S SANTA!!!”

Fun Fact: It has been proven that screaming warms the peripheral blood system. Since Santa has ordered at least 4.7 million snowflakes to dust Rockport tomorrow you need to join in.

Santa in 3 Days!!!

Is that Santa in a speeding Saab?

Of course not. Santa does not arrive for three more days. Don’t you be as clueless as these three dogs and get down to Rockport Harbor by 3:45PM to get your hot chocolate and a high five from Santa himself.

For up to date news and down to the second timing of the arrival of the large red one just click the Santa Timer

Only 7 Days to Rockport Santa

Not a local Santa. The real thing will be puling into Rockport Harbor next Saturday. The daughter is looking towards the north pole off Halibut Point this morning into the wind. Santa may arrive early if this tail wind keeps up.

Precise time until: Rockport Santa Timer

Santa Update 8 Days out

The Santa update was cancelled today because of high winds. Santa is still expected on Saturday December 5th although his hair might be a little tousled by the 32 knot winds from the north. He might arrive earlier than his expected 3: 45 PM arrival in the harbor this coming Saturday.

A daily report of his travel plans will be posted here at GMG each day at 2PM

Not representing anymore …

This is my ride that at 160,000 miles the piston decided to try to hammer the spark plug out of the engine:

4Runner No more

Already have a new license plate on my new ride but I’ll be by to pick up a new bumper sticker. I’m donating it to KarsforKids.org but if you are in need of a part drop me an email. I have friends who have already made claim to the rims, wheels, exhaust system. Anyone need an ash tray, roof rack, trailer hitch, used GMG bumper sticker?

Andrews Point Today

Today’s waves at Andrews Point. These might get a little bigger by Sunday morning if the northeast wind keeps up through the weekend.

Fun Fact: This is the third Friday the 13th this year. Is that rare?  Two in a row in February and March.

Pan Roasted Lobster

If you are trying out Jasper White’s Summer Shack the premier dish on the menu is Jasper’s Pan Roasted Lobster. The flavor of shallots and chervil in the sauce is amazing. So amazing we found his recipe and have done this at home quite a few times. Some things we have learned: This recipe is two lobsters and for two people. If you make it for four you really need to do the whole process twice. Doable but some work.

Some items you need: Shallots, chervil, chives and we use Wild Turkey Whiskey for the flaming part. This is what it looks like right after we have poured the Wild Turkey in and lit it.

The one last part that makes the dish. You need two girl lobsters from Gloucester. One girl, one boy is OK but part of the killer sauce is the eggs and the tomalley mixed together.

OK, here is the recipe from the New York Times adaption. It may seem like a lot of work going from the range burner to the oven and back and forth but it is so worth it. And make sure you find chervil, chives and shallots. You can use any bourbon but Wild Turkey can be sipped while you make this dish.

One last tip: make sure you have two oven mitts for getting this in and out of the oven. That pan gets hot. One can also use the broiler element and slide the pan just under the broiler instead of in the hot oven.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 live 1 1/2- to 2-pound lobsters
  • 2 tablespoons peanut oil
  • 2 shallots, minced
  • 1/4 cup bourbon
  • 2 to 3 tablespoons dry white wine
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, cut into small pieces and chilled
  • 1 tablespoon chervil, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chives, finely chopped
  • Kosher or sea salt to taste
  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste

PREPARATION

1.
Preheat the oven to 500 degrees. Place a lobster on a cutting board, facing you. Place the front tip of the knife or cleaver in the center of the lobster, near where the carcass meets the tail. In one forceful, swift motion, split the front half of the lobster, which will kill the lobster instantly. Turn the lobster around, and repeat this motion, splitting the tail and the lobster in half.
2.
Pull the head sac out of both halves. Use fingers or surgical tweezers to remove the intestines. Using a knife, cleaver or shears, remove the claws and knuckles by cutting the thin section where the knuckle meets the carcass. With the back side of the knife or cleaver, tap the claws until the shell cracks.
3.
In one swift, forceful motion, cut the head away from the tail on both sides of the lobster, quartering it.
4.
Place the lobster tomalley and roe, if there is any, in a small bowl. Using a fork, break the mass into tiny pieces, cover and refrigerate.
5.
Place a heavy 12-inch saute pan over the highest heat possible, and heat for 3 to 5 minutes. Add the oil, and heat until it forms a film over the bottom of the pan. Slide the lobster, shell side down, into the hot oil. Using tongs, move the pieces and flatten them to sear all the shells evenly. The claws need be seared on only one side.
6.
Add the tomalley and roe; stir, and place in the oven for 3 minutes. Remove, return to high heat on the stove and add the shallots and stir. Remove the pan from the heat, and add the bourbon; return to the heat, where the bourbon will probably ignite. Cook until the flames die down, and then add the wine and cook until all the liquid in the pan is almost dry. Reduce the heat to low.
7.
Quickly remove the lobster, and place, shell side down, on warm plates. Return pan to low heat, add butter, chervil and chives and stir until the mixture resembles a creamy sauce, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from heat, season with salt and pepper to taste, spoon sauce over lobster and serve.

Too Late to Check!!

This will be a twice a year post. They took the gender question down this week. The next post will be a sign that spring has sprung when the question is back. As of this week you can no longer check your package at the Rockport Information Center.  Mr and Mrs Bathroom sign has been stored away for the winter.

gender

I’ve made a T-Shirt with this sign but I could not think of something sick and wicked. So I asked my daughter the 13 year old. She said use, “Get Your Package Checked in Rockport, Turn Right”.

Can anyone top that?

Andrew’s Point Sunrise.

I’m going to try to post photos and stories of things that I have seen in the past few days but for a week or so I might have to cheat and use some older stuff:

Andrew’s Point at sunrise on September 27:

sunrise092709

I liked this one because of the pink cloud a third of the way up above the sun. Doesn’t it look like a lobster?  This pic is also a test of how this site handles large photos. This one was trimmed to just under a megabyte which hopefully resides behind the thumbnail with a click of the mouse.

That’s all for this cub reporter today since as I drove to work today in my truck munching on my breakfast sandwich I think I threw a rod. (Can I have a pound of whatever you’re grinding there?) 160 thousand might be the last mile on that puppy. The Ford Focus rental is kind of snazzy.

New GMG Rockport Reporter!

Joey is tired of me posting my “sick and twisted humor” (his description) comments on GMG and so has invited me to post on GMG at 2PM every day. I might not be able to do that every day but if I can post at least one photo of the sunrise from a Rockport vantage point with a comment here or there about what is happening to the east of the oldest seaport in America I’ll be doing good. I’ll also certainly post about Gloucester itself from the point of view of the newbie to Cape Ann. I’ve been renting in Gloucester and visiting Cape Ann for thirty years but as of last year am now partially moved to the island.

Another sentence about me. I grew up in Woods Hole but was not born there so I know the definition of local, tourist, townie, and newbie. Although my best friend from high school went long lining swords on Grand Banks I won’t pretend to know anything about the fishing industry. I’m a scientist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute for the past 30 years and probably won’t talk about my day job much either.

Instead, a paragraph about something that might be of interest to GMGers. For example, and just to see whether I know how to embed a photo on this site, last year I was on Bearskin Neck as the Freemantle Doctor rounded up to drop Santa off on T-Wharf in Rockport:

SAnta on the Freemantle Doctor

A quick search for “Freemantle Doctor” on GMG shows that Joey must know Santa personally. Not surprised one bit.

Fun Fact: Freemantle Doctor is the name of a cooling afternoon sea breeze in Western Australia. Who knew?

Santa will again be visiting Rockport Harbor this December 5th at 3:45PM to light the Christmas Tree in Dock Square. Mark your calendars.
