I am a translator, origami artist/teacher, and photographer, a blogger, former philosophy professor, and I love to sing.
You can see my photos on Flickr and buy prints of some of them on Fine Art America.
You can find me on
Instagram, Twitter (@mehjg), and in various and sundry other social media sites on the web.
I need to uncork this jar and get at least two miracles right now…
The pottery in the sunlight was bought at Bodin Historic Photo and Fine Art which sells a variety of this kind of pottery by a local artist. Bodin is having an open event with wine, cheese and chocolate this Saturday night from 5-9PM – come wearing red! The Celtic-ornamented pewter cup in the shadow in this photo is Irish pewter sold at The Pewter Shop in Rockport. Two of our many fine Cape Ann establishments!

Here’s a snapshot from the “sing” last night at The Annie – a weekly informal get-together on Wednesdays from 7PM to 9:30PM, where everyone gets a chance to sing and/or to sing along with others, and/or play acoustic instruments. People are also welcome to come just to listen. Our host requests a $5 donation from participants to help support our venue’s basic expenses.
Last night we had songs in English, Italian, Spanish, and Latin, from a variety of genres. We ended up with twelve people, three guitars, a sax and a clarinet (I think… I’m not an expert on wind instruments, so I may be misidentifying it). Come and join us for future “sings”!
In a day or two I’ll post a little video clip of one of the songs sung yesterday.

My first attempt folding this great design by Won Park. There were koi in a pond at the seminary where I used to teach, but I didn’t see them too often. Maybe they were trying to avoid being seen by the blue heron and other predators. Or maybe they were just being koi coy.

I got a book of dollar bill origami by Won Park. It includes some sea life models. This shark is the first design I have tackled from the book.
The shark tank was one of my favorite parts of Seaworld, where I visited about ten days ago, but I’d rather hold a paper shark than get too close to a live one without lots of glass between us.
I hope to share more “fishy” money origami in the next few days.

St. Ann School, seen from the intersection of Prospect and Pleasant streets.
Catholic Schools Week is a time when we are able to open our doors to the
community at large and showcase the very best we have to offer at St. Ann
School. The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is Faith, Academics, and
Service, which are all areas of strength at St. Ann School.
On Tuesday, 1/31, our K – 8 students were entertained by Jedlie, who
presented “The Challenge – To Live as Jesus Taught Us” (www.jedlie.com).
Through magic, stories, humor, song, and dance, Jedlie presented a faith-based
program for our students that encouraged them to treat each other with respect
and to stand up for one another.

Our students have spent the past month collecting warm weather gear for
families in need, and we will wrap up the week with a Patriots Spirit Day on
Friday to raise money for Catholic Charities.

On the Prospect St. side of St. Ann’s School, there is this text on the top of the façade:
Those three dates are interesting. I know why one of them is there (1885 is when the parish was officially founded), but the other two? Does anybody know what their significance is? I’m assuming one may be the foundation of the school (if that came after the parish), but that still leaves one date to account for…

I just got back from vacation in Florida. I meant to bring my GMG logo sticker with me to take a photo “representing”, but sure enough, I couldn’t find it when I packed my bags… so I got this photo at Universal Studios, Orlando, with the logo on my cell phone screen instead.

A sample of Gloucester downtown wildlife. He blends right into the asphalt. If he’s not careful with the traffic on Main Street, that will be more than an optical illusion.
