Their evocative sound features Christine’s celestial voice and Celtic harp seamlessly blended with Kem’s keyboard and world percussion mastery. They are joined by internationally acclaimed sax and flute player Stan Strickland for a magical evening of music to open your heart.

CACCN – ARTS ADVOCACY – Art Conversation w/ Rep. Ann-Margaret Ferrante Saturday!

This Weekend at the North Shore Arts Association
NORTH SHORE ARTS ASSOCIATION CELEBRATES SPECIAL “A FORTY YEAR COLLABORATION” EXHIBIT SHOWCASING THE WORK OF HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM, ARTISTS, NELLA AND STEVE LUSH. IN EXHIBITION Sunday, June 28 – Saturday, July 25. RECEPTION Sunday, July 12, 2 – 4 pm. ALL ARE INVITED. OPEN AND FREE TO THE PUBLIC.
“I don’t look for inspiration. Inspiration comes from hard work,” says Nella Lush, whose Italian heritage of family artists, musicians and poets living and working near the Adriatic Sea, has informed her artistic career.
Working on several canvases at once, developing the imagery through a process of surface changes, she constantly explores human history which becomes for her a spiritual and intimate journey. Drawing on her intuition and experience she never follows a formula. She brings together the alchemy of materials, classical forms and the appearance of centuries of aging in all of her work, whether it is an abstract, a fresco, a floral, figurative or marine.
Working in series mainly with oils, cold wax, often with marble dust, Nella plumbs the depths of exhilaration, angst and pure joy in the human experience. Her vibrant visual energy radiates from the canvas stirring our souls to come alive.
Nella is a Signature Member of the American Society of Marine Artists and President of the National Association of Women Artists, MA chapter . A juried member of both the North Shore Arts Association and the Rockport Art Association, her work is held in many private collections around the country.
Steve Lush’s artistic talent energizes his stunning marine art for which he has won many awards including the Winslow Homer Special Merit Award, and two Museum Purchase Awards from Mystic Seaport for their Annual International Maritime Art exhibition. His watercolors have been included in every annual international and regional exhibition of the New England Watercolor Society since 2008, and Steve is a contributing artist with the Coast Guard Art Program. His watercolors are on continuous exhibit at various Coast Guard venues.
Steve shares, “My art has been influenced by my experiences at sea, and the ports I’ve visited. Model shipbuilding has influenced my eye for form while literature of the sea has influenced my taste for individuality. I try to convey emotion, understated activity and contrasting light in my work.” Steve will be including work using oil and cold wax on canvas in this exhibition.
NORTH SHORE ARTS ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES AWARD WINNING CAPE ANN ARTIST, CAROLE LOIACONO, SOLO SHOW, “Reflections of Cape Ann”, Thursday July 2 – Saturday, July 25, Reception Sunday, July 12, 2 – 4pm.
Carole Loiacono declares, “I’m always in love with Cape Ann!” She is an award winning plein air painter who has fulfilled her dream of living, teaching and painting on Cape Ann for the last 30 years, also following the sun to paint in Tarpon Springs, Florida in the winter months.
Carole works in watercolor, acrylic, pastel, pencil, pen & ink and oils, and can often be seen painting on site throughout Cape Ann and Tarpon Springs. She likes to absorb the feeling of the moment. “Sometimes,” she says, “it takes me in a weird direction which leads me to start with a color I don’t normally use, and let the painting evolve from there.” Often described as a Romantic Impressionist, she likes to exaggerate the moment, the feelings, the experience of the day, pushing the envelope through color and texture. “I’m trying to be a conduit through the painting to convey to the viewer the essence of the moment by experiencing the energy of the scene. If I am able to express some of the feelings of excitement and joy that I experience while painting the beauty of Cape Ann, then I feel I have created a memorable piece of artwork.”
Loiacono earned a B.S. in Art Education from Pratt Institute and has taught art classes in the New York and Long Island school districts. In addition to numerous art show awards she was commissioned to create a 20 panel acrylic series and a 15 panel acrylic series for the Rockland Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, New York.

This Weekend at the Cape Ann Museum
Cape Ann Museum’s JOHN SLOAN Gloucester Days
highlights prestigious painter’s most productive years
New exhibition features 39 paintings from July 11 to Nov. 29

GLOUCESTER, MASS. – One of the country’s most important painters of the early 20th century, John Sloan (1871-1951) made his name painting urban daily life in New York City before coming to Cape Ann for five summers (1914-1918) to paint scenes of the sea, marshes, homes, rocky outcroppings, downtown views, and landscapes that proved to be a hallmark of his career.
In a special loan exhibition, the Cape Ann Museum will feature 39 paintings that Sloan created while in Gloucester, thought to be among his finest work and most prolific period. The Museum holds five major paintings in its permanent collection and will be borrowing 30 more pieces for the exhibit from a wide-reaching network of institutions across the country. JOHN SLOAN Gloucester Days opens July 11 and runs through Nov. 29.
Sloan was born in Lock Haven, Pennsylvania in 1871, grew up in Philadelphia, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. In 1904, he moved to New York City where he affiliated with a group of artists known as “The Eight;” in addition to Sloan, the group included Robert Henri, Maurice Prendergast, William Glackens, Everett Shinn, Arthur Davies, Ernest Lawson, and George Luks. The Eight evolved into the better-known Ashcan School, a loose-knit group of artists who sought to capture the reality of daily life in New York City.
The forward-thinking Armory Show of 1913 in New York was a turning point for Sloan. Inspired by the progressive work he saw there, Sloan sought new venues for painting. He was invited by fellow artist and friend Charles Allan Winter to Gloucester in the summer of 1914, and together they rented a little red cottage near Rocky Neck where Sloan would often paint two landscapes a day. The house was a popular gathering spot for many of their friends, including Stuart Davis. The red cottage still stands on Gloucester’s East Main Street.
Intrigued by the lush green seaside grass juxtaposed against the blue sea, Sloan captured recognizable scenes downtown and along the shoreline. He returned to Cape Ann for four more summers. “After coming back with our easels, canvases, and paint boxes, we would each sit in a corner of the dining room to study our work,” Sloan recalled. “One summer Stuart Davis and family shared the cottage. We went out painting together. All of us were interested in developing different orchestrations of color on the palette.” By 1919, Sloan sought new landscapes for his work and moved to New Mexico.
Cape Ann Museum’s Sloan collection includes: Sunflowers, Rocky Neck, 1914; Old Cone (Uncle Sam) 1914; Glare on the Bay, c. 1914; Red Warehouses at Gloucester, 1914; and Dogtown, Ruined Blue Fences, 1916.
The exhibition will also feature additional paintings on loan from the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College; Lehigh University Art Galleries; Arkell Museum in Canajoharie, NY; Bowdoin College Museum of Art; Syracuse University Art Collection; Delaware Art Museum; Duke University Museum of Art; University of Washington Museum of Art; Norton Museum of Art in Palm Beach, FL; New Britain Museum of American Art; Tacoma Art Museum; Kraushaar Galleries; Parrish Art Museum in NY; as well as private collections.
“Gloucester afforded the first opportunity for continuous work in landscape, and I really made the most of it,” Sloan recalled. “Working from nature gives, I believe, the best means of advance in color and spontaneous design.”

His earliest visit in 1912 was made in the company of fellow artist Leon Kroll. During his second visit to Cape Ann in 1923, Hopper courted the young artist Josephine Nivison. He also began working in watercolor, capturing the local landscape and architecture in loosely rendered, light filled paintings. In 1924, Hopper and Nivison who were newly married returned to Gloucester on an extended honeymoon and continued to explore the area by foot and streetcar. During his final two visits to the area, in 1926 and 1928, Hopper produced some of his finest paintings. This special walking tour will explore the neighborhood surrounding the Museum, which includes many of the Gloucester houses immortalized by Hopper’s paintings.

Summer Demos at Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck Deborah Way and Katherine Bagely – Jewelers
Saturday, June 27, 2015, 1 – 3 PM
Gallery 53 on Rocky Neck
53 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930
Gallery hours, Daily, 10:00-6:00 PM
Starting June 27th, 2015, Gallery 53 will be hosting a Summer Demo Series. This is a great opportunity to be able to see some of the “behind the scenes” workings of different artists in their chosen mediums. The demos are free and open to all interested in learning about new techniques and art forms.
The first of our Summer Demo Series are two jewelers working primarily in sterling silver, Deborah Way and Katherine Bagely.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Deborah Way lives in Gloucester and has been working in sterling and gold since she first learned her craft on the “other” Cape in the ’70’s. She particularly enjoys the “play” that metal gives when she forms her designs, and will do some demonstrations of her hammering technique that she employs currently.
Katherine Bagley also lives in Gloucester. She has been fascinated with metal work after being introduced to it through a pilot program in her high school many years ago. She finds much joy in the ways in which metals can take on form and beauty by the many methods of manipulation. She will be weaving and crocheting wire as part of her demonstration.
There will be plenty of opportunity to dialog with the artists so come on by and bring your curiosity.

Karen works with colored clay using a process influenced by the Japanese technique, Neriage (nair ee ah ghee). She wedges color into porcelain clay. Then she takes these colors and puts them together in a block. She slices this and re-shapes again and again until she has a thin slab of patterned clay she can form into exquisite treasures including Hors d’oeuvre Platters, Saki Sets, Salt Cellars, and Whimsical Mini Teapots.
The end result is beautiful, playful and infinitely usable for visual pleasure, everyday meals and/or entertaining in style.

Capture the poetic beauty of nature through plein air, sketches and photos for studio work in this workshop which is designed to add new dimension to creative painting; not in the sense of imitation, but as an essential path of expression of one’s thoughts and feelings when interpreting nature and subject matter in general. Federico says, “We will push boundaries by looking for the essence, by personalizing color, and by enhancing composition elements. The purpose is to convey a free, open and colorful mood in your work by examining content, execution and technique.”
