Gloucester, MA—The Rocky Neck Art Colony (RNAC) is excited to hold its most prestigious fundraiser, The BIGtiny Art Event, on Oct. 10 to 14, entirely online this year. The five-day virtual event features hundreds of one-of-a-kind 7×7″ matted art works for sale, donated by over 100 artists. All of the proceeds from the BIGtiny Art sale go to the Rocky Neck Art Colony so we can continue to provide excellent programming, exhibition opportunities, workshops and events for our members.
The web venue makes it easy for viewers to see all of the artwork from the safety of their homes and to closely examine each piece. Many of the artists have big reputations but you won’t know whose work you have chosen until you see the signature on the back. The website will be ready for viewing on October 5 at www.rnacBIGtiny.com. Artwork is for sale for five days beginning Saturday, October 10, 2020 from 10am to 9pm.
Kathleen Gerdon Archer, Rocky Neck Art Colony president and event organizerremarked, “I am grateful to all of the artists who want to support the Art Colony with their donations. At past in-person BIGtiny Art Events, the people who arrived first had a great advantage. An online event gives everyone time to see the work and compile a list of favorites … but the rush to get work is just as fast paced. You must move quickly to get your top choice. The first day’s art will sell at $150 and we expect work to fly off the website. The second day the same beautiful work costs less — $100, and the third to fifth days’ work sells for $50. Take a chance and wait if you dare — but I’d suggest you go for it!”

Since early 2018, Jane Deering Gallery has been providing exhibition space to area artists. They pay no rent and receive help with promotion and publicity. Artists find it a rewarding experience and Deering believes it’s important for the area. It fosters growth in the arts and offers new visions to our community.
But these are challenging times. To continue providing this space to artists, Deering asked the many national and international artists she’s worked with over the years to donate a small work, which is now offered to the public for $20.
Here’s a chance to find a little gem for a song while supporting the gallery’s mission. Works are signed on the back — an Absolute Secret until you’ve bought the work, turned it over, and discovered the artist.
The gallery is grateful to the many artists who enthusiastically donated a work to this cause.

The Cape Ann Artisans are pleased to announce that the well-loved 37th Annual Fall Open Studios will be held this October on two days, Saturday and Sunday, October 10th and 11th from 10AM-5PM. The summer Mini-Tours were well-received and as such, the group will consist of eleven of the artists who are able to accommodate visitors within the parameters of Covid-19.
The participating artists include artists from many genres that will appeal to art lovers and adventurers who look forward to weaving their way around the coast. In the category of Ceramic Arts, the Fall group includes David Archibald, Cynthia Curtis, and Erin O’Sullivan & Scott Place (Twin Lights Studios). With 43 years under his belt, David continues to explore combinations of two to four glazes yielding unusual forms of reds, celadons, and blues. Cynthia’s popular ocean-inspired creations include coral vases, undersea lamps, berry bowls, lobster and starfish ornaments, scallop and clamshell dishes, mugs, and wedding platters, some with melted beach glass. Erin and Scott look to the ocean’s creatures for their inspiration and serve up pottery and sculpture with a contemporary flair.
Visual artists include Jillian Demeri, watercolorist, and Sinikka Nogelo who creates in several media – as a painter and sculptor. Both Jill and Sinikka are located at Cripple Cove Studios in East Gloucester. Rockport-based painter Deb Schradieck works in watercolors and oils. Linda Hogan and Sara Wright represent the fiber arts. Linda has created under the name Blueberry Cove Quilts for forty years but is new to the Artisans group. Sara Wright will display her handwoven and original handknit accessories for wardrobe and home, created using contemporary application of color and texture with traditional textile techniques and novelty yarns. Mosaic and nature lovers will enjoy exploring Pam Stratton’s beautiful garden, Koi ponds, and Mosaic studio. Pam uses stone, glass, and other materials to create wall pieces, jewelry and sculpture.
Jewelry artists include Marcie Rae and Jacqueline Ganim-DeFalco of Cape Ann Designs. Marcie’s jewelry and small wall pieces of glass enamel and fine silver use ancient and contemporary techniques and tools to transform metal into evocative forms and images. Using historic sea glass and pottery shards, Jacqueline creates distinctive, functional wearable art that celebrates the natural characteristics of the materials and reflects the natural beauty of the region,

Jennifer McCalmont is a recognized Cape Ann artist with a solo show of stunning floral and landscape paintings at the Rockport Art Association & Museum in the Marguerite Pearson Gallery. Her work is about capturing the grace or fragrance of flowers and sharing their beauty through painting.

The Boston School has its roots in impressionist ideals, but combines the best of representational painting, seeing color correctly and drawing accurately. McCalmont has learned from many of the Boston school “greats”, most recently spending many years studying portrait painting with Mary Minifie.

Gloucester, Massachusetts/USA – August 20, 2020 – Jane Deering Gallery, Gloucester’s premier art gallery, announces an exhibit showcasing experimental artist Donna Caselden and contemporary artist M. Kristine Fisher. Awry | Just Breathe, inspired by these historic times, presents two different interpretations in response to “the noise” of the current Covid19 pandemic. Awry — Nothing seems quite right in the world, everything is a bit off kilter. All pieces are intentionally misaligned and act as a metaphor for the angst and discord in today’s world. Just Breathe — As an antidote to the disarray, these works reflect the way in which Cape Ann’s transporting beauty, discovered along daily beach walks and explorations, provides comfort, healing, and renewal. Jane Deering Gallery is located at 19 Pleasant Street, Gloucester MA. Gallery hours: Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 1-3pm, September 25 through October 12, and by appointment. Please contact Donna Caselden at dcaselden@gmail.com.

Sophy Tuttle, Environmental Installation Artist for Goetemann Artist Residency 2020, will give two talks, live and virtual
Dates:
Wednesday, September 9 at 4 PM (Meet the Artist Talk)

Sophy Tuttle, Goetemann Artist Residency program, Environmental Installation Artist, 2020, at Rocky Neck Art Colony
The Goetemann Artist Residency program, part of Rocky Neck Art Colony, is proud to announce two talks featuring this year’s Environmental Installation Artist Sophy Tuttle.
Although the rest of the Goetemann Artist Residency program for 2020 has been cancelled due to Covid-19, the Environmental Installation Artist, Sophy Tuttle, will be on-site at Ocean Alliance, painting a mural on the repurposed shipping container where Ocean Alliance houses its Robotics Club.
Container building an Ocean Alliance in current condition.
The Meet the Artist Talk, on September 9 at 4 PM will be via Zoom, and introduces Tuttle’s work and plans for her project at Ocean Alliance.
The Project Unveiling Talk will take place at Ocean Alliance (32 Horton Street on Rocky Neck in Gloucester) at 4PM September 29, accommodating visitors wearing masks and socially distancing as necessary—also available via Zoom. Both talks will be recorded.
Sophy Tuttle is a visual artist born in Colchester, England. She received her BFA in Illustration from Rhode Island School of Design in 2008 and MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from the University of Hartford Art School in 2019. She currently resides in Massachusetts.
From Sophy Tuttle’s Artist Statement:
“My paintings and installations examine humanity’s collective priorities for the planet. I draw upon disparate inspirations such as the aesthetic and methodology of the natural sciences or the compositional strategies of the Mexican muralismo movement.
“I always begin with a certain genre of questioning. For example, we have relied on the idea of Aristotle’s hierarchy of species to place ourselves above all others in every decision we make. What would it look like if we inverted this hierarchy? In this vein, each piece that I produce is a catalyst for conversation, collaboration and activism.”
About the Goetemann Artist Residency:
Celebrating its 16th year in 2020, this prestigious residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony provides each of four visual artists and one environmental installation artist with a four-week stay in a live-work studio with access to the rich cultural community of Gloucester, MA. Windhover Performing Arts Center announces this 60 second trailer for Quarry Dance lX for you to view here below. The 30-minute film is still being edited, and original music is being composed for the film now by Russ Gershon.
In July 2020, Dušan Týnek Dance Theatre was in residence (safely) at Windhover, bringing two dancers at a time from New York to create solos and duets at three private Cape Ann Quarries. Boston based videographer Anders Johnson filmed the dancers from floats and boats in the quarry waters in order to capture unusual angles. The stunning results will be shown on the Windhover website via You Tube in early September. www.Windhover.org So stay tuned.
The Quarry Dances were born from a vision of Ina Hahn, Windhover’s founding Director, whose goal was to marry the art of dance with the pristine granite landscapes of the magical quarries of Cape Ann.
