Free Outdoor HarborWalk Summer Cinema Series Starts on Wednesday

Destination: Downtown Gloucester

Free Outdoor HarborWalk Summer Cinema Series!

The Wizard of Oz July 9, 2014

Grab the Popcorn!  The City of Gloucester and the Cape Ann Community Cinema are pleased to announce a swell summertime partnership:  The HarborWalk Summer Cinema Series.  These FREE outdoor movies will run Wednesdays for eight weeks throughout the summer, July 9 to August 27 at 65 Rogers Street (I4C2)—adjacent to the Building Center.  Movies start at 8 PM (or when it gets dark, whichever is earlier), and feature blockbuster classics suitable for the whole family.  Imagine seeing “Jaws” with Gloucester Harbor as a back drop, or “ET, the Extraterrestrial” in the moody dark of night!

The movies are free, and all are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, a blanket, or perhaps a picnic.  Local vendors will provide snacks for purchase.  Better yet, support our local restaurants by having dinner then walking down to enjoy the show.

North Shore 104.9 will provide pre-show entertainment, music and prizes beginning at 6 PM!

Save $12 right now on Gloucester Blues Fest Tix — then relax the rest of the month

The last few times we’ve warned you against waiting until the last minute it has been because the shows were selling out (which they did) and we didn’t want you to complain that you hadn’t heard about them until it was too late.  This time we’re trying to save you $12 PER TICKET to the Gloucester Blues Festival, which is the biggest and best blues festival that will ever come to your backyard for prices like these: $28 in advance or $40 at the gate.

I know, August 9 seems far away, but you can only buy advanced tickets until August 4.  That’s only 4 weeks from today and given this great weather, you’ll probably forget because you’re having too much fun in the sun during the day and partying too hard under the stars at night.

But right now, you’re reading this blog post, which means you’re at a computer or on a smart-phone, either of which can be used to get your tickets RIGHT HERE.  Then you can relax and enjoy the rest of July without worrying that you’ll be distracted at just the wrong moment by that nagging voice asking, “What was I supposed to do?”

Here’s Shemekia Copeland at the very first Gloucester Blues Festival in 2012.

Check this year’s lineup here.

Free Outdoor Movies @ I4-C2 start on Wednesday – Tune in to Northshore 104.9 tomorrow at 9AM to hear all about it!

Gloucester Community Development Director Tom Daniel and his senior planner Matt Coogan will be Aurelia Nelson’s guests tomorrow morning at 9am on her 104.9 radio show “Curtain Up” where you can get all the skinny on the Harbor Walk Summer Cinema Series that starts on Wednesday.

It’s all about the music – Video from July 3 Free Concert on the Boulevard

Last night, July 3, 2014, was the 7th anniversary of the annual Runaround Sound Extravaganza, a free concert on the Boulevard after the Horribles parade.  Last night we had the biggest crowd of the past 7 years even though there were no fireworks.  It really is all about the music.  Check out the finale.

All I can say is that I’m honored to live in the City that brought us the tremendously talented Carlos Menezes, Jr., who, along with some of Gloucester’s best musicians perform this show for free every year — and Ringo Tarr, who, along with his team, do more work behind the scenes in one day than many people do in a month.

BREAKING NEWS: Fireworks Cancelled, Horribles Parade and Free Concert Still ON

The Runaround Sound at the Boulevard on July 3

The Gloucester Fireworks Committee just cancelled tomorrow’s fireworks due to weather predictions (see Gloucester Times article here), but the Horribles Parade and free concert are still on in the hopes that weather will clear up.

Music featuring Cape Ann Big Band and The Runaround Sound will begin after the parade passes by the Boulevard stage (probably around 7:00pm) and continue until 11:00pm with a spectacular laser light show somewhere in between.

So come out and enjoy the parade and free concert.  Let’s show all those people visiting from out of town that bad weather predictions aren’t enough to spoil our fun!

Fourth of July week at Rockport Music

LivTaylor-photo Ron PownallOn Tuesday, July 1 and Wednesday, July 2, at 8 pm, singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor will share his signature upbeat storytelling to touching ballads that will take audiences on a musical journey, whether singing  hits “I’ll Come Running,” “I Will Be in Love with You” or other favorites.   His vast musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire, and he is equally at home with a range of musical genres, including folk, pop, gospel and jazz.  His versatility has led to performing with such major artists as Linda Ronstadt, Jimmy Buffett and Jethro Tull among many others. As the younger brother of iconic folk rock star James Taylor, Livingston successfully carved out his own niche in the pop music world, gaining acclaim for exquisitely reworked covers of classics like “On Broadway” and “Over the Rainbow” among others.  Currently a professor at Berklee College of Music, Livingston shares his performance knowledge and experiences with the next generation of young artists.  Additionally, he released a new book in 2013 aptly titled Stage Performance, in which he imparts the various tricks of the trade.  Tickets: $31-$52

ZappaOn Saturday, July 5 at 8 pm, Dweezil Zappa is keeping the musical legacy of his legendary father alive with a series of tours called Zappa Plays Zappa. The fully orchestrated band, complete with video integration of the elder Zappa performing along with his son and band, is a complex, entertaining, fun, sophisticated and rare experience! With a handpicked band of young musicians, the younger Zappa celebrates his father’s classic album Roxy & Elsewhere by performing the album in full!   For fans of Frank Zappa (or fans of experimental, progressive rock), it just doesn’t get any better than this.  Tickets: $55-$85

Earlier the same day (3 PM), Dweezil will lead a guitar masterclass—for the price of a fuzz pedal, learn techniques from the son of Frank Zappa! Dweezil Zappa’s music camp, Dweezilla, has a motto “Learn and Destroy.” It refers to destroying the boundaries that confine music creativity. Tickets $75

On Wednesday, July 9 at 8 pm, Grammy Award winner and platinum-selling artist Shawn Colvin will perform at the Shalin Liu Performance Center.  Known best for her platinum-selling A Few Small Repairs with hit single “Sunny Came Home,” this incredibly talented singer-songwriter has carved an immovable place for herself amongst the pantheon of contemporary folk music. In a career spanning more than three decades, Colvin has developed a devoted and loyal fanbase on the strength of her highly personal and emotive lyrical style. The Opening Act is Anthony D’Amato. Tickets: $49-$68

Windhover Summer Dance Performances

Windhover announces its Summer Dance Performances
Featuring Forty Steps Dance and Sarah Slifer Swift
at Windhover Performing Arts Center
257 rear Granite St., Rockport, MA
Friday, July 18–Sunday, July 20, 2014 at 8:00 P.M.

Tickets: Adults, $20; Students and seniors, $18 ; children under 10 free.  Tickets may be purchased at Toad Hall Bookstore, Rockport; The Bookstore, Gloucester; or by sending a check to Windhover, P.O. Box 2249, Rockport, MA 01966

Forty Steps Dance will be performing two works, both choreographed by artistic director Sallee Slagle. “Creatures” was created in 2014 and is based on the movements of the variety of creatures around us and our affinity to the natural world.  “Accord” is a crowd-pleasing work created in 1992 and was recently performed in Nahant for the company’s 20th anniversary.

Sarah Slifer Swift will present two recent works. “Insenser” (2014 premiere), named after an NSA surveillance system, takes on the human response to watching, being watched and becoming data.  “Invisible Stories” (2013) is a collaboration between Swift and Vermont-based writer and choreographer, Kate Morgan, based on the idea that “the book,” open or closed, occupies the landscapes in which we live.

As part of the “Invisible Stories” performance, an installation in one of the Windhover buildings will be on display at the start of each evening.
