THURSDAY NOVEMBER 19

Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ the Rhumb Line

We’re gettin’ on track for the holiday season by  bringin’ in our favorite chef and dishwasher: Mr. Mike O’Connell. His latest book: “Cooking With Beano” Is number one, nationally, and number two, locally. We eggspect some wild souffles and panting pancakes out of our gravelly genius, so get there early to get a seat.
Pushing him forward into the mix will be Leo Shimataro(sp.?) on drumbs and symbols, and of course, Greg T. on catarrh, and myself. Should be a wild time.

From Doug Silva @ THE TOPSIDE GRILLE

What’s up everyone? This Thursday I have a great band playing at The Topside. The Band, Steppers Heaven, come from Boston and they play an infusion of Blues, R&B, Funk, & Rock. I had them down last month and they were unbelievable! Honestly, if you can only make it down once to check out a band at the place, this is the one to check out. If you were there last time, you know how good they are. 2009 winners of the NEUMA (New England Urban Music Awards) categories Best blues band, Best new single, Best original music, and Best female vocalist. Also, a featured group as part of the Boston Blues Society! I am expecting a great turnout and I’m going to be opening up the back lounge for the night! Be sure to get there early if you can! I will be behind the bar as always, and it’s always easier for me to socialize a bit more before the show. Be sure to try some food/appetizers & cocktails if you haven’t tried them yet. Thanks for the continued support, the night has been a success so far and the music has been incredible, hope to see you there! Thursday night 8-11. I’ll be there after 5:00.

Here is a list of other upcoming shows:

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 20

From Frank Hawks
Slingdaddy has its first show at the Rhumbline in Gloucester, this
Friday, Nov 20th.  This one could be one for the ages….the stars have
aligned in such a way that members of one of Gloucester’s band’s from the
heyday of such venues as Li’l Earl’s are able to converge and thus there
will be a  mini-reunion of “Macduff”.  For those of you who remember the
vocals of Rebecca Jackson, the thundering rhythm section of  Spanks and Orlando with the twin Marshalls of them Hawks(e)s boys – we will all be there.  There will definitely be some “sittin’ in” going on.  (Don’t
worry, the twin Marshalls will stay at home).

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 21

Also from Frank Hawks

For a change of pace, my other project, the Megan McKenzie Band will be
at Elliot’s @ the Blackburn on Saturday, November 21st.  Fronted by the
powerful vocals of Megan Downey, and backed by local veterans of the
Gloucester music scene, Megan McKenzie Band performs songs from the 60’s to the present.  Remember, this show is from 8:30pm to 11:30pm.

From GMG’s own Mike Lindberg

Don’t miss Exit 11 this coming Saturday Night at Camerons. We don’t get together that often so it’s sure to be a great time. See you there!

ALYSSA SUEDE ROCKS GLOUCESTER

“She may be the sister of Beck, but Alyssa Suede sounds more like a mix of Jewel and Alanis Morrisette.” – Rock is Life.com

Singer/Songwriter, Alyssa Suede began her music career two years ago under the guidance of her dad, renowned arranger/composer David Campbell. She spent the past year playing clubs in N.Y., Nashville, Los Angeles and Northern California. Her latest performances include the 2009 Sundance festival and this year’s SXSW.

Presented by local promoters Victory Agents and Dan King, Suede will take the stage for one night only at Elliotts in Gloucester.

Comfortable alone on stage, Alyssa moves with ease from guitar to piano to harmonium and has a voice thats been called “-breaking, twangy [with a] musical likeness to Jewel that is often startling.” – Muzikreviews

Meanwhile, her single “Falling from Mars” has already generated a buzz in the film community winning “Best Music Video” at the Memphis 2008 Film Festival and “Best Original Song” at the 2008 Feel Good Film Festival in Hollywood. Her EP, “Black and White in Color” was released in October of 2008 and is available on iTunes.

A year ago this weekend-

From Joey – November 13,2008

“Last Night’s First Ever Gloucester Guerilla Art Project was a fantastic event.  There were many faces of the Gloucester Blogging community represented along with friends of GMG and other nortable folks.

I’d like to thank Robert Newton who provided the venue Cape Ann Community Cinema (and I think I forgot to thank publicly last night).  I’d also like to thank all the presenters- Jay Albert from Cape Ann Images, Mark Teiwes who shoots for the Beacon and hosts some of his work at www.MarkTeiwes.com, Chad Carlberg and Emile Doucette along with the rest of the team from www.baitandtackle.biz . Also thanks go out to Kat Valentine from Valentine Design who put Jay Albert’s slide show together and also was of great technical assistance.  If you haven’t already checked out their sites I highly suggest you do.

I’m looking forward to collaborating with these guys in the future to bring even more fun community media presentations to you fine folks.

It was nice to see fellow bloggers Jon Conant, John Hintlian, Miz Lia and Steve B.  Thanks for the support guys.  Also thanks go out to one of my best buddies “The Rabbit”  who took over GMG photo duties so I could meet folks without the encumbrances of the camera(pics coming later) or you could check out Miz Lia’s Blog for a few to hold you over til the Rabbit gets his ass out of bed today.

Thanks also go to Enrico Pallazzo and his lovely wife Kim for showing the love last night along with Damon and Ann Malloy of Neptune’s Harvest Fame (who I got to meet officially last night), Big Daddy Phil Doucette, Kenny and Paula Ryan, Dad’s cousin Gail Guittar, Jay’s family, Sharon Lowe, the fans of GMG, and the other people that I’m suddenly forgetting but showed up including the lovely lady that told me earlier in the week down the dock that she was going to show up and she did with her friend but her name escapes me.

Thanks to anyone else that came but I’m forgetting or didn’t get to meet.

Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I promise we will continue to do these and add more contibutors in the future.  I’d like to have John Hintlian, Sharon Lowe and Steve B participate in the next one (start putting your stuff together).

Ahhhhhhhh, feels good!”

OMG Cookies!

cookies

Laurie posted a recipe a few weeks ago for Fall Fruit Oatmeal Cookies and I was dying to try them. So the opening of our gift shop,“Present”, last night gave me a good reason to make them. I found all the ingredients (including the cinnamon chips), but I decided to use dried apricots instead of the apples. Well I gotta tell you, they are incredible. I was lucky to get them out of the house with 2 guys (and me) sneaking cookies all evening.

Thanks, Laurie!!! Yum!

Dave Sag’s Blues Party @ the Rhumb Line and Beyond

It’s gonna be a busy week, so, let’s get going.
Thursday nite, it looks like yet another close encounter of the fourth kind, as we welcome back that doodley duo: Mario Perrett and Edd “Duodenum” Scheer. I love playin’ with these guys. Cutie-Pie Mario, who may or may not have posed for Playgirl Magazine, will be honkin’ his sax and testifyin’ to that vocal jive while Ed, our see-thru drummer and vocal ad-libber will be nailin’ down the beat and laughing at everybody within earshot.Looking befuddled and playing his catarrh will be Greg T.,of course, and I, too, on base.

Things deteriorate rapidly this Friday nite at Elliot’s at the Blackburn, with the triumphant return of The Geezerz. Last time there we outdid ourselves and I was forced to change my slacks twice (Just kidding). As you all must know by now, The big G is decomposed of Dave Brown, battin’ cleanup, Dave Mattacks, who carefully locates that arcane spot between tick and tock, Greg Tower, who nullifies the void, and myself, with mop and pail.Showtime is 8:30, and ends when the band disappears.

But, wait! there’s more: If you act now I’ll throw in with no cost to anyone: another jam session! Yes, yes, this Sunday afternoon, from 1 to 4  at Chianti’s in Beverly, there will be a monstro gathering of the troops to raise money for The North Shore Blues Project. This is the brainchild of local filmmaker Henry Ferrini, and we gotta help him out. Tryin’ to get some dough together to spread the word of the blues to kids around here with film and live performances. On tap are the likes of Willie”Loco” Alexander,John Hyde and his blushing bride, Sandi Bedrosian, Mark Retallack, Rik and Al-x Razdan  and many others, myself included.C’mon down!

Finally, for those of you who are underemployed,or just darn lazy, Monday afternoon at the Rose Baker Senior Center got sumfthin for yoo: the Good Old Saltine Jazz Band playin’ yer favorite hits from 1910 on. I play bass with these guys, and it’s great fun.Stop in from 1 to 3 for a taste of the real thing. No cover, no minimum! Ta-Ta!

When Zat Winner!

Bob M

The year  this photo was taken was 2006. I love how people figured it out. Some guessed and others (the first was Jerry) went back into our political history and got it that way.

Here are some  of the responses:

Well, it has to be an “even” year “cause Tierney and Verga were running..can’t read the other buttons, and they don’t appear to be Clinton, so I will guess 2000.

July 2006.

One of the stickers is for Deval Patrick and he’s only been involved in one campaign. Also, I think Bob supported Astrid for state rep in 2008 so, it had to be before then.

I’m guessing 2006 since he’s also wearing a Deval Patrick pin.

Ghost??!!??

IMG_0346 Yesterday Grandkid #4, Kylie, took this picture out the car window with my iphone as we rode down Rte. 2. She was surprised to see this image when she looked back through the photos and showed it to us. Her dad, who is a avid ghost hunter, was stunned. We were talking about my mother and her ancestors at the time. Creepy. No explanation.

Well, we got to Amherst to see Cait cheer and watch the football game (UMass 37 -Northeastern 7). On our way to get some lunch, Kylie showed Cait the photo.  She freaked out and thought we should go right to the local newspaper to report the “ghost”.  In between Cait’s screaming and everyone talking about the possibilities, I heard Kylie say something about an “app” (Ghost Capture).

At that instant I knew we had been tricked by a 10 year old. She laughed so hard she cried. The rest of us threatened to do bodily harm, but it was one of the best practical jokes ever played on our family. Now it’s our turn!
