Did You Know? (World’s Hands)

That Rumi Cachimuel is from Equador, that all the products sold at World’s Hands are made by his family in Equador, and that he is an accomplished musician?  World’s Hands at 130 Main Street opened just after Mother’s Day.  Rumi is a new Gloucester resident who comes to us from Equador, via Somerville.  If you haven’t been into the store, do stop in.  It is a feast of color and beautiful summer dresses, skirts and tops, as well as beaded jewelry, bags and dreamcatchers.

Rumiñahui Cachimuel is also a member of Yarina, a group that performs traditional Andean music and dance.  Rumi studied music theory and majored in classical orchestra and solo flute. A member of Yarina since 1992, he previously performed with the Andean Instruments Symphony Orchestra of Imbabura, Ecuador. He plays the bass, guitar, pallas, kenacho, sampoñas, mandolin, and charango. He is also a vocalist and dancer. Rumi studied flute at the Instituto de Musica Luis Ulpiano de la Torre. He has received bass instructions from Luis Guzman.

Rumi a multi-instrumentalist artist, has performed with Mariela Condo, Daniel Mancero, Alex Alvear and Marta Gomez. He has also been part of the musical composition and acted as the leading music role for the Ecuadorian Documentary Film “Sara la Espantapajaros”. His instruments include bandolin, kenas, sampoñas, rondador, mandolin, charango, bass and voice.

You can see and hear a performance by Yarina at http://yarinamusic.org/yarina-demo/ – check them out.  I’ve heard other Andean musical groups – Yarina has a very unique sound and the dancers are great.  We just have the coolest, most unique, and multi-talented people on this rock.

Marilyn Swift and Suzanne Gilbert Represent

Artist, Marilyn Swift http://www.marilynswift.com/ and NSAA Gallery Director, Suzanne Gilbert http://www.nsarts.org/ represent at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery on Saturday.  There were so many people on Rocky Neck yesterday that I am surprised it didn’t take on water.  It was so hectic in the gallery that I missed many photo ops and chances to have people represent.  It was great to meet so many fans of Good Morning Gloucester and I wanted to thank you all for coming by.  Don’t be strangers.

Did You Know? (Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery Grand Opening)

Spoken Word poet, Joda Khan

That the grand opening of Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery will be held on Thursday, June 2 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm during Night on the Neck, with a performance by spoken word beat poet, Joda Khan (think bohemian, Kerouac, Ginsberg, Maya Angelou – not your grandmother’s poetry).  Some of your favorite GMG personalities are bound to be in the house (maybe even R. Duck accompanied by Paul Morrison).  Come on by, have fun, represent, get your photo up on GMG, and then at 9:00, swing over to Madfish Grill and kick up some sand with Soul Rebel Project (wharf girls, EJ and Alma McLaughlin will be leading the dance party – maybe Brenda Malloy and Wendie Demuth will join in).  Who knows, maybe we can even get Art Rocks! Paul Frontiero onto the dance floor.

Did You Know? (Dirty Car)

That I had a really dirty car until she was amazingly cleaned by the Boy Scout Troop 112?  They are doing a car wash right now on East Main Street behind Smokin Jim’s Bar-B-Que – until noon.  If you have a dirty car and want to get it clean and help support Troop 112 – get down there right now.  Troop 112 will also be holding a yard sale on June 18 from 8:00-noon at East Gloucester Marina on Norwell Court (across from Richdale’s on East Main).  Get clean.

Did You Know? (Eider in Eclipse)

Photos by E.J. Lefavour

That this is an adult male common eider in eclipse plumage?  Male eiders are very handsome sea ducks, who exhibit strong sexual dimorphism to attract females, so when I saw this mangy looking fellow feasting on a mollusk beside Capt. Joe & Sons, I didn’t know what it was.  In the non-breeding season, they moult into this drab female-like appearance, which is called the eclipse plumage. When they shed feathers to go into eclipse, the ducks become flightless for a short period of time.  Some duck species remain in eclipse for one to three months in the summer, while others retain the cryptic plumage until the next spring when they undergo another moult to return to their breeding plumage.

Did You Know? (Saturday on Rocky Neck)

That there is so much going on around Rocky Neck this Saturday, that you should plan to pack a bag and stay over?  Aside from all the great galleries, restaurants, music and general funky coolness that are going full swing this Memorial Day weekend, there are some special added attractions.

Amy’s Coffee & Cones will be featuring reggae with Soul Rebel Project from 3:00 to 6:30.  If you missed them Thursday night at Madfish Grill, make sure you catch them at Amy’s, or even if you were at Madfish, you’ll probably want to hear them again, they’re that good.  Then there is always cool, fun, funky and positive Brenda Malloy’s Imagine Gallery – stop in and see what’s new.  Then there are three opening parties going on, so pace yourself.  Rocky Neck Art Gallery will be holding Receptions for both the 2011 Members’ Exhibition and the Break Out Student Exhibit from 5:00 to 8:00pm at 53 Rocky Neck.  Then at 75 Rocky Neck, Kathy Archer of White Bird Gallery and Sigrid Olsen of ISLA at 75 Rocky Neck are collaborating on an opening party, also from 5:00 to 8:00pm – a must do.  And stop by Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery at 77 Rocky Neck G3, just for the adventure of it, and check out Chris Murray’s new exhibit of 3d photography of Mexico (everyone who has seen it says the same thing: “WOW”), as well as work by the man behind GMG, Joey C. and contributors “Art Rocks” Paul Frontiero, photographer extrodinaire, Sharon Lowe and “Did You Know?” EJ Lefavour.  Then check out Wendy Demuth Photography’s soft opening at 77 Rocky Neck, G5 (next door to Khan Studio and across from ISLA).

At 8:00pm, Madfish Grill will feature Young Guns Jamboree with Joe & Renee, Charlee Bianchini, Pete Lindberg Band and Jake Parde Band.  I think Rocky Neck is just about the most happening place in the Universe this weekend – so be here, or be somewhere not quite as cool.

Did You Know? (Soul Rebel Project)

That I love Reggae?  I have to say that for a bunch of white boys, Soul Rebel Project is good.  Their covers and originals come with the right lick and moves (the Reggae King, Peter Tosh and Sizzla influences are definitely apparent and they would take no offense).  Their lyrics are positive, with an irie Rasta vibe that you can’t help but move to. If you overstand and appreciate Rasta culture and Reggae music, you will love Soul Rebel Project.  Wharf Girl, Alma McLaughlin danced up a storm and had a great time.  My dance card for Thursday night is filled for the summer with Soul Rebel Project at Madfish Grill.

Did You Know? (Watercolor Workshop with Jane Goldman)

Watercolorist and teacher, Jane Goldman, is offering a 2-day workshop in lovely Annisquam?  You can see some of her work at http://www.somervilleopenstudios.org/artists/artist_profile.php?artistID=119 and see her teaching resume here http://www.janegoldmanartist.com/teaching_resume.pdf.

Did You Know? (Diana’s Gallery on Madfish Wharf)

Photos by EJ

That Diana Pasquariello has operated Diana’s Gallery at 75 Rocky Neck, G12 for ten years?  Diana’s gallery showcases her original watercolor paintings inspired by florals, landscapes and abstract concepts.  Fine art prints can also be found in this sun-filled gallery (when the sun is actually out).  Primarily self-taught, Diana has taken workshops and classes with several wonderful artists over the years.  As a child she loved drawing and painting and has developed a unique, impressionistic style which is both delicate and strong in color.  Her style is spontaneous and intuitive, and she creates from memory or instinct.  Her gallery is really lovely and welcoming, and although Diana is a bit camera shy, I was able to capture her, so you’ll recognize her when you visit.  Her husband, Tony is often there helping her as well, and he is the one responsible for stringing the white Christmas lights along Madfish Wharf to make the place more festive and inviting at night.  Her gallery is open from May 15 to October 15, and normal gallery hours are noon to 6:00 pm and weekends until 9:00 pm.

Did You Know? (Discover Gloucester)

That the Discover Gloucester season’s tourism kick-off event was held on on Tuesday, May 24, 6:00PM at the Stage Fort Park Visitor Welcoming Center?  There was a great turnout, and the new Discover Gloucester Visitor Guide was launched.  Here are some photos from the event, starting with a number of the volunteers who make the Visitor Welcoming Center so welcoming and informative for our visitors.  Also see the cover of the new Visitor’s Guide (which we have a supply of at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery), as well as shots of some of the attendees.  Everyone got a couple of minutes to talk about their business and/or volunteer efforts and to exchange information.  GMG stickers were, needless to say, a big hit.

Did You Know? Sushi

That there is now an awesome sushi bar at Madfish Grill at Rocky Neck?  Here you see parking angel, Phil and his wife, Lynn getting ready to enjoy hot rock (sashimi-style meat cooked at the table on a 1,000-degree volcanic rock).  Next you see Chef, Jordan Rubin at the Sushi Bar.  Just look at how fresh and beautiful everything looks!  When not at Madfish Grill, I am told Jordan can be found at wildly popular Uni Sashimi Bar in Back Bay, Boston.  I’m not a big sushi fan myself, preferring my meat cooked, but I could definitely go for some of that hot rock sashimi, and plan to next time the Sushi Bar is open (Thursday and Friday for dinner and Saturday and Sunday for lunch and dinner, and Memorial Day – check out menu here).  And can you identify the GMG contributor in the background behind Lynn?

Did You Know? (Sista Felicia)

I think you all know that Sista Felicia is an amazing cook.  Did you know that she bakes the most amazing macaroon cookies?  She baked these cookies and left them with Joey at the dock for me to have at the gallery (I was in Boston and the gallery was closed).  It was very trusting of her, as they apparently are Joey’s favorites.  He was very disciplined and didn’t break into them until I arrived.  I’ve had two of them myself.  Please come by and visit the gallery (77 Rocky Neck, G3 – noon to 8:00pm) and have one or two, and save me; if you don’t come and eat them, I will have to.

Sista Felicia, thank you so very much; that was so sweet of you, as was the card with them.  EJ

Did You Know? (GMG Blackburn Challenge Contenders)

Photos by EJ

That Joey C. has a camera that can be programmed to create the most geeky expressions on people?  I’ve seen him do it many times with me, and he did it Sunday with in-training GMG Blackburn Challenge contenders, Paul Morrison and Ed Collard.  This is how Paul and Ed really looked – like sleek, well-oiled, finetuned contenders.  And there you can see Joey, with a slightly demonic grin on his face, creating the wrung out looking Ed and port-a-potty seeking Paul shots he posted on Sunday.
