Do you remember this?

joy biddle painting

rocky neck

This is a painting we bought many years ago from Joy Biddle. I believe it was painted looking out of that house. The building across the street is Sailor Stan’s. It’s a shame that the building is now gone.

Quote of the Week by Greg Bover

“Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits.”

Leroy Robert “Satchel” Paige (1906 – 1982)

Perhaps the greatest pitcher of all time, Paige, an African-American from Mobile, Alabama, was not allowed into Major League Baseball until 1948 when he was 42 years old, the oldest “rookie” ever. He began his professional career in 1926 and pitched for numerous teams in the segregated Negro Leagues, gaining fame not only for his throwing prowess, but also for his ebullience and love of the game. Even at his advanced age he was elected to the All-Star team twice and was finally inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971 at the urging of Ted Williams and others. Among his other famous sayings: “How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

Quote of the Week from Greg Bover

Let us turn our thoughts today
To Martin Luther King
And recognize that there are ties between us
All men and women
Living on the earth
Ties of hope and love
Sister and brotherhood
That we are bound together
In our desire to see the world become
A place in which our children
Can grow free and strong

James Taylor (1948- ) from Shed a Little Light (1993)

A native of Boston, Taylor grew up in North Carolina but returned to Massachusetts to attend Milton Academy. Plagued by depression, he committed himself to McLean Hospital for nine months, later moving to New York City where he fell into heroin addiction, but maintained a high profile music career, ultimately signing with Apple records and working closely with Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Clean and sober in 1969 when his first album was released, he married Carly Simon in 1972, and actress Kathryn Walker in 1985, and is now married to Kim Smedvig, publicist for the BSO. They have a home in the Berkshires. The five-time Grammy Award winner is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and holds honorary doctorates from Berklee and Williams Colleges.

Artists Get Cracking – You Have 3 Weeks

GHW map1

National Opportunity
2013 Gloucester HarborWalk
Public Art Challenge

Deadline: February 8, 2013

The Gloucester Committee for the Arts, on behalf of the City of Gloucester, MA, is seeking professional artist/s and/or artist team(s) for new public art work in downtown Gloucester for our 2012 designed HarborWalk.

Visit http://ghwalk.org to view/download the complete Call.

From there, artists wanting to apply will submit their entry in digital format through CaFE™ at https://www.callforentry.org/

Artists will create a profile page on the CaFE site, upload artwork images and input artwork details.

There is no fee to apply, nor to create a profile on CaFE. Following successful set up, all interested applicants will be granted full access to the detailed application; simply click on “Apply to Calls” and click on “Gloucester HarborWalk Public Art Challenge”.

With all the incredible talent that exists here, it would be a shame to have artists from Pennsylvania or Oregon or somewhere else get to do the public art projects on our HarborWalk just because awesome artists here, who intimately know and love Gloucester, didn’t get their submissions together and in on time. If you have an idea, develop it and get working on your submission now. You have three weeks, and it doesn’t cost anything but your creativity and time to apply. Good luck to all who do a submission.

Do you know?

triptych2

This photo collage triptych was created from nine different photos. I wouldn’t expect anyone to know exactly where they were taken, but do you know what the nine different images are of?
