Rocky Neck

rocky neck montage copy

There are so many galleries, restaurants, interesting and historic places to see and things to do on Rocky Neck that I could probably create six more of these and not scratch the tip of the iceberg of photos I have taken.   Artsy, fun, quirky, unique, fascinating, historic, beautiful Rocky Neck.

Snow Removal, Gloucester, 1916

fred_snow removal gloucester 1916
Washington Street, Gloucester, March 17th, 1916

Over the years, I’ve learned when to wait for the City to plow and clear the sidewalks, and when to pick up the shovel myself. There are 3 tools I keep in my Jeep: Windshield brush/scraper, plastic snow shovel, and a very heavy ice chopper/hoe. I also carry a bucket of sand/salt mixture, which one can get free from the Gloucester DPW yard on Poplar Street. Honestly, I don’t think all neighborhoods in Gloucester are cleared of snow yet, like Main Street. Cleanup priorities are major roads for emergency vehicles and traffic first, then less important ones for commerce, and then everything else. We have 160 miles of roads, and two feet of snow creates a lot of snow removal. Let’s look at this photo and count our Blessings!

Brooks Williams with Danielle Miraglia at Old Sloop Coffeehouse

Brooks Williams at Old Sloop Coffeehouse February 15 with Danielle Miraglia

Old Sloop Coffeehouse will present a performance by Brooks Williams  on Friday, February 15, at 7:30 PM at the handicap-accessible First Congregational Church of Rockport, 12 School St, with Danielle Miraglia opening.  Ranked one of the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists, singer-songwriter Brooks Williams writes groove-laden songs and delivers them with an easy-going vocal style and monstrous guitar chops.  Walking the line between blues and Americana, Williams has worked stages worldwide for over 25 years, amassing a staggering back-catalogue of songs, recordings and tales.  With nearly 20 CDs to his name – and more on the way – this Statesboro Georgia native is, according to americanaUK, “impossible not to like.”  Danielle Miraglia comes armed with a strong steady thumb on an old Gibson, an infectious stomp-box rhythm and harmonica.  Her tunes range from heart-felt to socially conscious and will move both your heart and hips.  Danielle’s latest release “Box of Troubles” a bare-bones expression of all these attributes, explores the highs and lows that life has to offer and has already received rave reviews.

Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10 from the coffeehouse web site at oldsloopcoffeehouse.org, at Gloucester Music, and at Toad Hall Bookstore in Rockport.  The suggested donation at the door is $12 for adults, $7 for those 65 and older, $5 for those younger than 18, and $24 for a family.

This one is really special with the craquelure egg and the gold highlights. Nice shot Len.  BTW, Len was very impressed with Fr. Green’s ice crystal shots, especially since he had shot them with his iphone.

Even though this my summer hood, which I know and love so well, it took me a minute to figure out where this was under all that snow.

Quote of the Week by Greg Bover

And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.

T. S. (Thomas Stearns) Eliot (1888-1965) From Little Gidding, Section V, The Four Quartets

Though born in St. Louis, Eliot’s family had New England roots reaching back to the Salem witch trials and deep into Harvard yard. He attended Milton Academy and spent summers on Cape Ann (see The Dry Salvages), later studying at Harvard, Oxford, and the Sorbonne. In later life he renounced both Unitarianism and his American citizenship in favor of Anglicanism and the United Kingdom. Eliot is often cited as the greatest modern poet, and The Waste Land as one of the most important poems of the 20th century. In 1948 he was awarded both the Nobel Prize for Literature and the Order of Merit.

Snowed In

2013 blizzard 730am feb 9

On top of losing power and internet connection, which just came back, I couldn’t get out of my house, so this is the best I could do.  View of my walkway with 4′ of snow covering it, snowed in screen porch with the snow piled up against the door.  My neighbor, Sarah Hackett, had bare ground showing on part of her yard, and snow up to her windows.  And it’s still snowing!  My neighbor Jen Nicol came over the cleared my door, so I can get out to try to clear the 6′ of snow that has drifted up behind all our cars at the top of the Union Court. Things you can’t help but love about living in New England.

Icey Finger of Fate

charlie_icey finger of fate

Caught this Image of the Ice’y Finger Of Fate, this morning over at Buswell’s…

You can only see them, on the day before a major snow storm….

and only if that day happens to be a Thursday…

So I guess I was pretty lucky…

Sober Connections Event Rescheduled!!! March 9th!

Ok, So after watching the weather forecasts this afternoon, there is now a possibility for up to 33 inches of snow, possibly not ending until Sat night/Sunday morning (depending on the station you watch), so we have rescheduled this event to MARCH 9th.

We want to thank Frank Santos Jr. and The Hastings House for graciously allowing us to do this! Thanks! All tickets will be honored on that day, and for those of you that have already bought your tickets and cannot go on that date, please contact me at 978-381-9888 and I will refund your monies!

Tickets will continue to be an sale for 15 dollars online, thru Donny, Myself, or Trish S in Beverly, as well as at Sunbanque Tanning Gloucester & at Sunbanque Tanning Beverly. Remember! They will be 20 Dollars at the door!

Some of the deciding factors in our decision are all about the safety of anyone attending. The roads will definitely be narrower (never mind that the state and cities might only want emergency vehicles on the roads) Parking would certainly be an issue with parking bans in effect. Sidewalks would not be cleared in most areas, and we do not want you walking in the street to get to the event. And although Frank Santos Jr was more than happy to drive up from RI no matter what our plans, we didn’t want him having to drive with reduced speeds (it would probably take him three hours each way!). But the most important reason is that I lazily didn’t want to have to shovel the Hastings house out…lol
Please spread the word to others!!

February 8, 1920

fred_february 8 1920

I don’t pretend to forecast the weather. I only know how to deal with it when it arrives. The photo: “Washington Street, Gloucester, February 8th, 1920.” I just got one of those emergency messages from the Mayor’s office stating that a snow emergency parking ban starts tomorrow, February 8th, and will be enforced as the intensity of the storm increases. Ok. We’ll be open. Bring it on. Thanks for venturing out and taking this photo, with tripod and 5×7 inch camera, Alice M. Curtis. Your legacy continues. The Chocolate Tour is on for Saturday evening.
