MUSICAL SYNERGY OF MIDDLE EAST AND WESTERN JAZZ AT MEETINGHOUSE GREEN
July 19 free concert of Middle Eastern Jazz

 The entrancing music of the Middle East is integrated with Western Jazz standards by the American-born band, Hye Fusion, at the third free concert on Meetinghouse Green, on Friday, July 19, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM.

 Enjoy the dynamic synergy of melodies and rhythms of this unique band, who play both current and traditional instruments. Hye Fusion’s love for integrating Middle Eastern music with jazz comes from their family lineages, from musical training at the New England Conservatory as well as from musical mentors such as Oscar Peterson  and Bill Evans. Mal Barsamian is renowned for his oud playing, classical and rhythm guitars as well as clarinet and saxophone. Harry Bedrossian is also a highly accomplished oudist as well as a classical concert pianist, with expertise in Middle Eastern modal tonality. And Charles Dermenjian plays percussion, featuring the doumbek, the most commonly played percussive instrument of the Middle East. The band successfully blends ethnic Middle Eastern rhythms with standard and creative Western Jazz music, making an unforgettable evening of musical enjoyment.

 Each week Music on Meetinghouse Green partners with a different non-profit organization to raise awareness for the services they provide to the local community. At the July 19 concert, the audience is invited to contribute to a freewill donation for the Open Door, a non-profit whose mission is to alleviate the impact of hunger in our community. Markouk will provide delectable Middle Eastern food for concert-goers.

 The Gloucester Meetinghouse, home of the Unitarian Universalist Church, is located at the corner of Church and Middle Streets. The concert is handicapped accessible. Event parking is available on the green and at additional parking lots nearby in the Historic District. Folding chairs will be provided or bring your own beach chair. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be held inside the Meetinghouse.

Crane waiting for the barge

The Crane at Magnolia Pier is taking down the pilings closest to shore.  The delay of the barge was due to some of the moorings having to move so the barge could come in and remove the rest of the pier.  It is coming along.

Gloucester Rotary Club Summer Social Sunset Cruise

Gloucester Rotary Summer Social 2019
The Gloucester Rotary Club will host a Sunset Cruise aboard the Privateer, docked at 63 Rogers St in downtown Gloucester, on Thursday, July 11, 2019. Boarding begins at 6:00pm, and we leave the dock at 6:30pm, returning at 9:30pm.

In addition to beautiful Gloucester vistas and refreshing ocean breezes, the cruise will include sandwiches, salads and desserts, a cash bar, and fun entertainment.

Tickets are $35 each and can be reserved by contacting Brad Pierce at 978-884-9999. The Privateer can accommodate 150 guests. Last minute walk-ons are welcome, but advance reservations are appreciated.

Candlelight Tours at Hammond Castle Museum

John Hays Hammond, Jr. loved the evening. Alexander Graham Bell had suggested to Hammond that he work at night and sleep during the day, which Hammond adopted. Domestic staff, frequent overnight guests, and even Hammond’s wife were daytime people and frequently commented that they might go long periods where they rarely saw him.

With this in mind, “candlelight tours” are offered Thursday nights during the months of July and August. Guides will show you the rooms the Hammond frequented and tell stories about how Irene Fenton Hammond and her husband enjoyed their many years living in the castle. Guided tours are the only way to see the castle on Thursday evenings at no additional charge other than basic admission, and are offered at 6:00, 7:00 and 8:00 P.M. CLASSIC ROCK AND ROLL BY LIVIN’ ON LUCK
July 12 free concert of rock will inspire you to get up and dance on Meetinghouse Green

 North Shore based group Livin’ on Luck plays the second free Friday evening concert of the Music on Meetinghouse Green’s 2019 season, at the corner of Church and Middle Streets, on July 12, 2019, 6:00 P.M. – 8:30 P.M. 

 Rockport-based vocalist Ann O’Donnell together with North Shore locals Josh Bevins (bass), Tom Bull (drums), Bobby Cedrone (guitar and vocals), and Tom O’Donnell (guitar and vocals) have a combined century of rock experience, while playing together as a band for fifteen years. All of the band members began their musical journeys in garage bands. They will play a choice mix of tunes from the seventies, eighties and nineties. Classic rock by Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones and Moody Blues and other greats will take you on a musical trip down memory lane. “Love, relationships and nature are big themes of our songs,” said Ann O’Donnell. “We combine ‘torch songs’ which are slow and soulful with eurythmic and dancing songs. We have fun, and the audience loves our choice of songs.”

 

Each week Music on Meetinghouse Green partners with a different non-profit organization to raise awareness for the services they provide to the local community. Classic Cooks will provide tasty food for concert-goers.
