The spring without The Cupboard has turned into summer and ever more. Gloucester’s authentic, reliable & affordable summer eats is **gasp** done.
Read more about the status in a front page story by Ethan Forman in the Gloucester Daily Times.
Although the restaurant and food take out won’t open, the ice cream windows will serve happiness for a few weeks. So, trying to stay positive, the send off will be a sweet, soft closing which may soften the blow. At the very least it will prod a visit and a chance to express gratitude.
When summer days and nights beckoned and our cupboards were bare, The Cupboard was indescribably full. Wish them all the best!

Opening this week! Vincent Castagnacci | Variations on the rock that is Cape Ann.
Reception Thursday July 11th, 2024. Jane Deering Gallery.

Jane Deering shares a reminder and some more about the exhibit:

Out with the old exterior and in with the new! The Old Nugent Farm condominiums are getting some love in the summer of 2024. There are 70+ (72?) condos and SPS was contracted to take care of each one. The exterior components to be demoed and replaced are all the biggies: Roofs (some with skylights). Siding. Windows. Deck. Chimney repointing. The completion date is expected before the summer of 2025.
A unique construction staging area was tucked away to manage the scale of this project. Besides deliveries and garages, a mini mockup condo model was constructed to test the materials in the field, and problem solve optimum execution and training (such as the flashing performance).
The original great design of the Old Nugent Farm condos, which deferred to nature, will remain. They will be green again. Do you remember before there were condos?

Happy 4th! Enjoy William Gillespie with the gorgeous solo from the George Washington finale number (George M. Cohan samples Battle Hymn of the Republic in You’re a Grand Old Flag); and two clips with James Cagney as Cohan: dancing down the White House stairs; and on the dock because Gloucester and the fireworks signal from the ocean liner 🙂

Gloucester, Mass. July 3, 2024.
After a lull in construction on the Good Harbor Beach Inn site — reflecting 3 months fine-tuning the engineering plans just so– the foundation digging for the anchor lobby building has commenced for this scenic property across from Salt Island.
The Martignetti family who purchased Good Harbor Beach Inn a couple of years ago are diehard Gloucester fans. Mark Martignetti who is directing the building is overjoyed to be back at it.
“I’m managing the building for a family venture. We have always, always loved Gloucester! Part of growing up North of Boston is coming to Gloucester…to Good Harbor Beach, right? We had talked about the business for years and years. Now we are thrilled to own it. We can’t wait to open and be part of the community!”
Mark Martignetti. Good Harbor Beach Inn, July 2024

As reported with the demo here, the configuration of the Inn will remain roughly the same featuring a main lobby building with the guest room out buildings clustered on the hill. One local amenity that will not return is the rustic snack window takeout which was not grandfathered into the renovation. Stay tuned: A family familiar with the food & beverage and hospitality industry will no doubt have some attentive and creative ideas to satisfy guests.
The construction site will get busier now. Crews are lined up and final construction ETA may be 9 months out.
Drawings illustrating the final project will be public over the next couple of weeks.

Lobster Cove String Quartet: UNITED
The Lobster Cove String Quartet gives the third and final performance of its debut season, Friday June 14 at the Annisquam Village Church @ 7:30 pm. The Gloucester-based group presents UNITED, an adventurous program of all-American music, featuring an array of iconoclastic works by Henry Cowell, Philip Glass, Samuel Barber, Antonín Dvořák, and Scott Moore. From the weird and arcane, to the contemporary and austere, to some of the most beloved music of the last 130 years—with a playful old-time fiddle romp thrown in—the quartet unites to celebrate a few of the many threads which make up the ever-evolving tapestry of American music.

“I am besotted by plants and flowers -their form, their color, their contrasting meaning and function…As markers of seduction and marriage, birth and death, serenity and celebration; As sexual receptacles vibrating with thrum, buzz, wind and heat; Indoors as cut, curated artistry and ornament; Devolving from their prime into rank chaos – faded, battered, hanging by a single thread to a stalk.”
Bobbi Kovner
Bobbi Kovner has a BA from Wheaton College; MA Degrees from Columbia University and Lesley University; and a diploma from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. She has taught Theory of Design seminars and Advanced Drawing at Endicott College. Although Thai Choice restaurant has been for sale, we hoped it wasn’t true. It is. Thai Choice announced their retirement and are indeed closing. The last day of operation will be May 25, 2024.
Everyone involved in their business is so amiable! Thai Choice made our family feel special whether we were grabbing take out or dining in, even more so when we gathered for small family celebrations. There is so much variety and tasty options on their menu, carefully cooked and customizable– for us it was a combination of spicy for some family members, tame for my mother in law, and just right for me.
There’s still time to order your favorite meal, thank them, and wish them well.
