This is the new bag ban in Boston-
Make sure you take your reusable bag the next time you go grocery shopping in Boston or to McDonalds.
Beginning Friday, big-name grocery stores in Boston will no longer have plastic bags readily available for customers due to the city’s new ordinance.
The plastic bag ban was unanimously approved by the Boston City Council last December and signed by Mayor Marty Walsh.
It requires businesses to charge 5 cents for reusable bags, paper bags with handles and compostable plastic bags in an effort to cut down on waste. Customers can still have paper bags without handles for free.

Dear Friends,
GMGI marked our five-year anniversary in 2018. This year the organization took big steps toward our mission of catalyzing the local economy by applying genomics to the oceans’ natural resources in order to both discover new therapeutics and aid the region’s fisheries.
2018 highlights included in this newsletter provide a sense of the amazing progress achieved – from graduating a second Academy class and piloting the first SummerSTEM camps for nearly 50 middle and high school students, to cutting the ribbon on our magnificent new research Institute, the world’s first facility dedicated to marine genomics research.
We also launched the New Ocean Opportunity Fund – our $15 million, 5-year sustainability campaign – attracting several early and generous pledges.
We are excited to begin leveraging our presence on the working harbor to drive breakthrough research that builds the foundation of a new biotech hub on Cape Ann. On behalf of the GMGI team, we wish you a wonderful holiday season and look forward to sharing regular updates on our research and invitations to the events we will offer in 2019.
In appreciation,
GMGI Board of Directors
