AN ALL-ITALIAN FINE WINE TASTING…THE GRAPES OF LAZIO, TUSCANY, CALABRIA, & PUGLIA, ITALY. discou
Lila Spumante Rosato “Lila” is a proprietary sparkling rosé wine made exclusively for the Italian Wine Traders house, so Chuck will have to tell you all about it. It is one of their most successful wines, due to its popularity in Boston-area Italian restaurants. It is 100% Pinot Noir with a lovely nose of summer boysenberry and strawberry fruit, a fine and delicate mousse, following a crisp, dry finish. Lile most sparklers, It. Pairs well: with many different foods, from popcorn and chips to fried chicken and Mousse Truffée… $19.99
Let’s raise a glass with Chuck to toast his recent engagement! Poggio le Volpi Frascati Superiore “People,” Lazio, Italy Varietals: Trebbiano, Malvasia, Alc. %12
Poggio Le Volpi is a family-owned winery that occupies an area between the slopes of Monte Porzio Catone and the Roman countryside, an area where grape vines have grown for centuries. “People” is a great expression of the Lazio appellation. It is a versatile wine to accompany everyday dishes, and a wine to share with friends, intended for all types of palates. Pale and bright straw yellow in the glass, it exudes a fruity aroma full of pear, green apple and grape, mixed with white flowers and cut grass. The wine’s taste is fresh and flavorful, with a pleasant acidity and a clean finish. Excellent as an aperitif, It. Pairs well: with seafood appetizers, risottos, vegetable soups, steamed fish and Thai chicken. ….$14.99
The Argentiera estate covers 200 acres of breathtakingly beautiful Tuscan coast, southwest of Florence. Argentiera is close to the sea and at a high altitude, making the land especially well-suited to growing grapes. The estate is considered among the most beautiful in Italy with its spectacular view of the islands of the Tuscan archipelago. The estate’s Vermentino is an intense straw yellow in color. The nose has fruit-forward notes of pear, banana, and apricot. On the palate, floral tones of lavender and white flowers mix with an herbaceousness defined by wild sage. On the palate, the wine is fresh and easy drinking; truly well balanced. A long, flavorful finish is pronounced by aromatics and definitive minerality. Pairs well: with most seafood dishes, from freshly shucked oysters to fried clams or battered fish tacos. It also pairs well with vegetables and is one of the few wines that pairs well with artichokes! $24.99
Ippolito 1845 160 Anni, Calabria, Italy Varietal: Gaglioppo, Alc. 15%
This wine was created to celebrate the history of the company, which was founded in 1845. The greatness of the Gaglioppo grape together with the company’s desire to innovate have given rise to a unique wine. The best bunches of Gaglioppo, manually selected, are left to dry on racks until the end of November and then the relative pomace macerates with wine from fresh grapes. The wine pours ruby with garnet flashes. Macerated red fruit aromas, woodsy tones, licorice, mixed with dried flowers, wild herbs, balsamic notes, and tree bark on the nose. Fullness, and great tannic structure is balanced by a marked marine flavor and a citrus freshness. It finishes on notes of cocoa and cinchona, sweet spices and red fruit. Pairs well: with succulent meats, red meat sauces, aged cheeses and cured meats…. $27.99
The Coppi winery sits on the hills of the Murgia dei Trulli, a site that has been a winery since 1882. Primitivo, like Zinfandel, is a descendant of Croatia’s Crljenak Kaštelanski. Primitivo is mostly grown in the southern Italian province of Puglia. Since its links relating it to California’s Zinfandel surfaced, plantings have increased significantly. Primitivo is more rustic in character – albeit in a charming way- when compared to its trans-Atlantic cousin. Coppi’s Primitivo is vivid red in the glass. It has a very fruity nose with cherry notes. On the palate, it is dry, quite fresh and structured, fruity, and full-bodied. Pairs well: with ham, meatballs with cream sauce, sausage and potatoes, venison, cold cuts, and matured cheeses.… $17.99

Sawyer Free Library is located at 2 Dale Avenue in Gloucester.
Gloucester, MA—In an extraordinary commitment to the well-being of the communities it serves, the Institution for Savings, headquartered in Newburyport, has made a charitable donation of $1,000,000 to Sawyer Free 2025 (visit sawyerfree2025.org), a philanthropic capital campaign to fund a comprehensive renovation, modernization and expansion of Cape Ann’s oldest public library. The seven-figure gift underscores the bank’s business outlook that success extends beyond profitability, growth rate and brand recognition, and further demonstrates its goal of effecting social change with its corporate values, practices and profits.
“This is such an important project for the City of Gloucester, the residents, the schools and the many non-profit organizations who have partnerships with the library,” said Institution for Savings President/CEO Michael Jones. “This project, when completed, will establish the library as a state-of-the-art hub for innovation, history, learning, arts and culture—right in the heart of Gloucester. We are thrilled and honored to partner with the Sawyer Library Foundation on this initiative and we graciously challenge others in the community to step up and help make this vital project a reality for the people of Gloucester.”
The Sawyer Free 2025 project will preserve the original exterior of Sawyer Free Library, which will house a fully redesigned interior, and will also double the size of the existing library’s footprint with a 15,000-square foot addition. The Institution for Savings’ donation represents the largest single corporate gift to the Sawyer Free 2025 campaign to date.
“The Institution for Savings’ goal of raising standards of living and advancing quality of life in the communities it serves is clearly evidenced by this astounding show of generosity,” said Barry Weiner, a retired attorney and the campaign chair for Sawyer Free 2025. “The bank’s commitment to exemplary corporate citizenship and social-mindedness is a powerful endorsement of our vision to fund this once-in-a-lifetime investment in a vital community resource. By giving back so unsparingly to the people who live here and by supporting growth for generations to come, the Institution for Savings has provided a huge tailwind for this philanthropic campaign. We urge our fellow citizens of Gloucester as well as residents across Cape Ann to be guided by this show of support and rise to this occasion with donations both big and small.”
The design principles of Sawyer Free 2025 are grounded in the human experience and an ambition to put people first. The newly renovated and expanded Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library will stand as a model for what a 21st century civic hub can and should be in terms of architecture, accessibility, sustainability, the use of natural resources and light, layouts, lines of sight, air quality and public safety. The end product will exponentially amplify the library’s ability to deliver critical services and outcomes not only for Gloucester, but for communities across Cape Ann and the North Shore as a place of equity, inclusion, connection, creation, compassion, renewal and advancement.
The Sawyer Free 2025 project’s total cost is $28 million, a sum that includes built-in inflation costs through the project’s completion in 2025. The Sawyer Library Foundation, the fundraising arm of the campaign, has already inspired $14.3 million in pledged donations and grant awards. The new facility—featuring a sound studio, a film studio, a digital tech lab and 110-seat community meeting space—will result in a 25-percent increase in annual visitors, a 25-percent increase in the number of public programs offered each month by the library and a 50-percent increase in the number of programs hosted at the library by partner agencies.
Since 1820, the Institution for Savings, the largest mutual savings bank in Massachusetts, has played an integral role in supporting the communities it serves. The bank’s Sawyer Free 2025 gift was made possible by the Institution for Savings Charitable Foundation. Through its Grant Committee, the foundation awards funds to organizations designated as charities under IRS section 501(c)(3) in Amesbury, Beverly, Boxford, Byfield, Gloucester, Groveland, Hamilton, Ipswich, Middleton, Newburyport, Newbury, Rockport, Rowley, Salem, Salisbury, Topsfield, Wenham, West Newbury and the surrounding communities.
