The Gloucester Health Department urges anyone whose pet may have come into contact with this fox on or before Aug. 10 to contact Gloucester Animal Control. (Photo Courtesy City of Gloucester)
GLOUCESTER โ Mayor Greg Verga and Health Director Mary Ellen Rose report that the Gloucester Health Department has been notified by the Massachusetts Public Health Department that a fox found in Gloucester tested positive for rabies.
The fox that tested positive was found in the area of 86 Concord St., on Wednesday, Aug. 10.
Rabies is a serious disease and immediate consultation with medical staff is needed after possible exposures. Any person who was bitten, scratched or who was exposed to the foxโs saliva has had a high-risk exposure.
Residents are urged to be cautious of wild animals while outdoors and when walking pets. You should never approach or try to pet an animal that is found outdoors.
If you believe you or someone you know may have had contact with this fox, please contact the Massachusetts Department of Public Health at 617-983-6800 (available 24 hours), or your health care provider for a risk assessment.
Following an exposure to rabies, disease can be prevented with prompt administration of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
PEP consists of both rabies immune globulin (RIG) and vaccine. RIG is administered once and helps provide immediate protection until the person responds to the vaccine by actively producing antibodies. The vaccine series consists of four shots with the first dose administered promptly after the exposure and then again 3, 7, and 14 days later. Persons with altered immunocompetence should receive an additional dose of vaccine on day 28.
If residents believe their pet may have had contact with the fox, please contact Gloucester Animal Control for more information at 978-281-9746

FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITHย ANTHONY SCIARAPPA OF CAROLINA WINES
THIS SATURDAY, August 20, 2 – 4 pm
COMPLIMENTARY
FINE WINE TASTING @ SAVOUR WITHANTHONY SCIARAPPA OF CAROLINA WINES
Anthony Sciarappa, from Carolina wines, has been in the industry for several years, coming to Carolina wines from years as a restaurant chef. He therefore is well-versed in food and wine pairing, so feel free to ask his opinion on whatever you are preparing for your next culinary feast. Carolina is a division of Martignetti and carries specialty portfolios from some of the great importers, including Kermit Lynch and Louis Dressner. Join us this Saturday to taste wines from three great American wineries of the Pacific Northwest, a balanced, aromatic Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa, and two French classics.
The 2017 sparkling wine vintage in the Willamette Valley was full of beautiful natural acidity thanks to a classically cool September harvest. Grapes from Knudsen Vineyard, protected in the deep volcanic soils of the Dundee Hills, bring supple depth and elegance, while grapes from Spirit Hill Vineyard, in the windy and rocky volcanic soils of the Eola-Amity Hills, bring spicy minerality. Elegantly expressive citrus flavors take on mineral and fresh ginger notes on the way toward a vibrant finish.
Wonderful as an aperitif or pairs well with shrimp and shellfish, salmon, rich cheeses, and charcuterie. $27.99
Sincerely Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape, South Africa
Neil Ellis is a South African wine industry icon and one of the early pioneers to bring quality levels up to world-class standards. He founded his winery in 1993 with the philosophy of sourcing grapes from the top growers of the Jonkershoek Valley region. Neil owns vineyards and sources grapes from the regions of Stellenbosch, Darling, Darbanville, and Elgin to produce the well balanced and easy to drink wines under the Sincerely label. This Sauvignon Blanc pours a pale straw-like color with attractive greenish hues. On the nose, it has bright tropical aromatics, with subtle citrus. The palate is elegant with delicately detailed sweet tropical fruits and a lively acidity, refined minerality, and a long finish.
Pairs well with roasted chicken, ceviche, oysters, smoked salmon. Or a salad with citrus fruit. $14.99
PรฉpiรจreLa Pepie Muscadet Sevre-Et-Maine โโMerci,โโ Loire Valley, France
Varietal: Melon de BourgogneAlc.12%
After yet another devastating frost destroyed more than 80% of Domaine de la Pรฉpiรจreโs 2021 crop, they floated the idea of doing a one-off vintage to help them get by financially. “Cuvรฉe Merci” simply translates to โthank you.โ Two friends, from whom Pรฉpiรจre already buys grapes to make their La Pรฉpie vintage, agreed to sell them finished 2020 wine from similar terroirs so they could have something to sell. The winemakers selected their favorite tanks to make Merci. The wine has all the characteristics of a quality Muscadet: crisp, dry, mineral, pleasant acidity and a long rich finish from sur-lie aging.
Pairs well with Moules Frites, shrimp, shellfish, Gruyere cheese, and Brie. $19.99
The first vineyards at Domaine de Fontsainte, in the Corbiรจres appellation, were planted by the Romans. Artifacts found in these vineyards, such as an old coin dating from the time of Marcus Agrippa in 25 A.D., are a testament to its antiquity. The original domain was built around a thermal spring, which was later named for the local, twelfth-century patron saint, Saint Simรฉon; hence Fontsainteโthe saintโs fount. Yves Laboucariรฉโs family has been making wine here since the seventeenth century. The Fontsainte vineyards surround the hamlet of Boutenac in the area known as โThe Golden Crescent.โ This swath of land is one of the sunniest in the appellation of Corbiรจres, enjoying south-southeast exposure, and protection from the cold, northeast winds by a large 500-hectare forest. The cooler sea breezes from the Mediterranean help this sun-soaked terroir achieve balance as well. A full-bodied and lush wine, brimming with strawberry summer fruit, but dry and crisp.
Pairs well with shrimp cocktail and salad Niรงoise. $17.99
Roco Gravel Road Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon
Varietals : Pinot Noir Alc. 14%
The hills in the Willamette Valley are punctuated by gravel roads, which lead to the regionโs finest vineyards. Roco’s Gravel Road Pinot Noir is a blend of grapes from several of these distinctive vineyards. An outstanding value, the Gravel Road Pinot Noir flavor profile surpasses many other wineries flagship Pinot Noirs. The old-world style offers bold flavor with balance and grace to pair well with nearly any food. ROCO Gravel Road Pinot Noir NV is a conjunction of the 2019 and 2020 vintage. This non-vintage Pinot Noir truly is โgreater than the sum of its parts.โ
The elegant poise of the 2019 vintage is layered with a minority of the robust concentration of 2020โs personality. The combination of these two very different vintages gives a masterful expression of Willamette Valley Pinot Noir.
Pairs well with mushroom dishes, pork, turkey, or grilled asparagus wrapped in prosciutto. $29.99
Hedges C.M.S. 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley, Washington
The grapes for this wine were sourced from the Sagemoor, Wooded Island, and Bacchus vineyards in the Columbia Valley AVA and Hedges Estate, and the Jolet, Belโ Villa, and Les Gosses vineyards in the Red Mountain AVA. The Columbia Valley portion of the wine was fermented to dryness on 100 % American oak and aged on 100% French oak. It was 100% barrel aged for five months in 100% neutral oak. The Red Mountain AVA wines were 100% barrel aged in 100% neutral American and French oak for 19 months. On the nose, aromas of dark, rich berries, cocoa, and vanilla mix with dried sage and cinnamon. On the palate, it is full-bodied with flยญavors of toasty blackberry, toffee, chocolate, leather and a touch of cassis. Pairs well with steak, lamb, or portabella mushrooms. $19.99

Early yesterday, we were in our boat and happened upon a gorgeous young couple posing on the rocky shore of Gloucester. They were having their wedding photos taken by their wedding photogs. I was out with my long lens capturing ocean wildlife but could not resist snapping a few images of this couple from my vantage pointโฆ I do not know who they are and do not wish to be too invasive so posted here are only two low-res jpeg images without showing their facesโฆ Message me and I would be most happy to gift these two newlyweds with the high resolution images if they so choose.
