Proceeds will ensure the Y continues to play a vital role in strengthening the community

Gloucester, MA – The Glen T. MacLeod Cape Ann YMCA hosted its first golf tournament at the beautiful Bass Rocks Golf Club on Monday. It was a cold and windy day but 76 golfers hit the links to join forces to raise funds to support the Y’s educational and summer youth programming. As a result of the pandemic, the YMCA is providing increasingly more financial support to children, adults and families across all programmatic areas. The YMCA of the North Shore golf tournaments have created a viable means of fundraising to eliminate the financial barrier and enable access to those in the community that need the YMCA most. With the generous support of title sponsor Institution for Savings, this tournament raised just over…

Discover Gloucester is excited to announce its guide to Gloucester this autumn, Fall For Gloucester: a collection of articles, stories, poems, and recommendations on what Gloucester and Cape Ann have to offer visitors in the fall. Created by members of the Gloucester Writers Center, these written works provide local perspectives on Gloucester’s many autumnal attractions. Fall For Gloucester articles are paired with photographs taken by Gloucester photographer Kendra Dott. The project was funded, in part, by a grant from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism and the North of Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“Gloucester has so much to offer beyond the summer. Gloucester’s artistic roots run deep, and collaborating with local creatives is representative of that aspect of the city’s culture and history. This project was a great opportunity to work with local artists and channel their imaginative expression about the change of seasons,” explains Discover Gloucester Executive Director Tess McColgan.
The written pieces showcasing autumn include “The Great Gloucester Pumpkin Expedition” by Kathleen Williams, creative writer and community leader in Gloucester. Williams outlines some local favorites for pumpkin lovers, from cocktails and baked goods to smoothies and pizza, she offers something for every pumpkin enthusiast, narrated alongside zany anecdotes.

“I think the word, for me, that best describes Gloucester in the fall is ‘relaxed.’ After the exhilarating pace of summer, it is such a good time to lean in and get close to the heartbeat of this truly amazing place. There is still plenty of great weather ahead, lots to do, and you can almost feel like the beach is all yours. For me, it’s a time to explore and refresh the creative spirit that is so alive here and such an important piece of our collective and personal identities,” says Williams.
Among the other contributing writers is Heather Atwood, a producer at Gloucester’s 1623 Studios, and managing editor of “The Other Cape,” who chronicles one of her runs through Dogtown Common in “Spending Time in Deer World.”
“I’m here for the fried haddock sandwiches and that intangible something that poets write about, something held by the men on benches outside the St. Peter’s Club. Church here is many things to many people, but when it comes to weather, work, and a helping hand, everyone here is devout. This is what I love about Gloucester. The sun sparkles on the water in a way it only can when refracted by massive knobs of granite. A few miles out of the harbor whales breach and spout like mythic clowns, and at the center lies stuff a glacier left behind, the ragged and bouldered Dogtown wild,” says Atwood of Gloucester’s natural allure.

Fall For Gloucester, like so many have before you. Read “Dog Days of Autumn,” “The Perfect Hike for Spooky Storytelling,” “Biding the Tides in Gloucester,” and many more! Find the full collection at discovergloucester.com/fall-for-gloucester, and plan your visit to our enchanting seaside city this autumn.

GLOUCESTER — Chief Eric Smith is pleased to announce that the Gloucester Fire Department has been awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The $291,272.72 grant will be used to fund the installation of proper sprinkler systems and working alarm systems for the department’s three substations. The sprinkler systems will be installed at West Gloucester Fire Station, 33 Concord St., the Bay View Fire Station, 891 Washington St. and the Magnolia Fire Station, 30 Fuller St.
The City of Gloucester will match the grant award by 10%, bringing the total funding available to the department to $320,400.
The installation of proper sprinkler systems will allow the department to mitigate any potential fires that could happen at any of the three stations, which are often left vulnerable when crews are responding to calls for service in the community.
Buildings are frequently unoccupied due to the nature of the job, and with the installation of sprinkler systems and working alarms, essential assets can be protected 24/7/365.
“I would like to thank FEMA and Mayor Greg Verga for making this funding possible,” said Chief Smith. “Additionally, we would like to thank our federal and state delegations for their support. Their endorsement of our applications and request makes a difference in the competitive review process and getting an award from FEMA. Over the last 7 years we have received 8 major awards totaling over $2.4 million dollars. Getting sprinklers for our stations is huge for us. If our buildings are empty, it means our members are out providing assistance to residents or businesses in need, so if something happens at the station there is no one there to tend to it right away. We’ve seen firsthand how important sprinklers can be in mitigating the damage fires can do, and we’re grateful to be able to install them in our facilities.”
Assistance to Firefighters Grants are allocated to fire departments nationally to fund and aid the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and non-affiliated emergency medical service organizations.
These federal grants help firefighters and other first responders obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources necessary for protecting the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

WINES
Manicor Vineyards, Kaltern/Caldaro, South Tyrol, Italy
For his services to the Empire, the Austrian Emperor raised Hieronymus Manicor to the nobility and endowed him with land on the shores of Lake Kaltern in the early 17th century. The oldest buildings on the estate date to 1608. In 1662, a granddaughter of Hieronymus married into the family of the Counts Enzenberg; by the 17th century the Enzenberg family was already involved in winemaking. After generations in the Manicor family, in 1978 the Manicor estate finally passed to the Counts Enzenberg.
In 1991 Count Michael Goëss-Enzenberg took over Manincor from his uncle. At that time the estate supplied grapes to the wine-growers’ cooperatives in Caldaro and Terlano. Count Michael improved the quality of the vineyards through a policy of strictly limited yields and near-natural husbandry. In 1996 the first Manincor wines were produced in the estate’s own cellar. The vineyard, which is on the Alto Adige Wine Road, is run using sustainable and biodynamic processes and produced its first biodynamic vintage in 2006.
Reserva della Contessa 2021
Varietal: 51% Pinot Blanc, 31% Chardonnay, 18% Sauvignon Blanc, Alc. 13.5%
Reserva della Contessa is biodynamic and is fermented in oak barrels with yeast naturally occurring in the vineyard. The wine is then matured on lees for nine months. It pours yellow with flashes of green. Delicate aromas of apple, apricot, and a hint of sage are found in the nose. It is elegant and mellow on the palate, and finishes with refreshing acidity. Serve this wine lightly chilled but not cold.
Pairs well with roasted salmon, chicken, or pork. $25.99
Der Keil 2021
Varietal: Old-vine Vernatsch Alc. 12.5%
Der Keil is made from grapes grown at 250 meters above sea level on south-facing slopes overlooking Lake Kaltern, one of the warmest sites in the South Tyrol; the old vines are trained onto pergolas and grown in sandy clay soil. The grapes are crushed and fermented in open wooden vats with skin contact for one week. It spends five months on lees in oak barrels. Bright ruby in the glass, der Keil has aromas of cherry and toasted almonds on the nose. It is juicy on the palate with an elegant finish. Serve slightly chilled (53° to 57° F).
Pairs well with dishes based on tomatoes and garlic, fried fish, chicken. $25.99
Reserva del Conte 2019
Varietal: 43% Merlot, 35% Lagrein, 22% Cabernet Alc. 13%
Each varietal that makes up the Reserva del Conte was crushed separately and fermented in a mixture of oak and cement vats and stainless-steel tanks for 10 days using yeast that occurs naturally in the vineyards. The wine is then transferred to oak barrels, where it ferments for 12 months. The wine has a bright ruby color and a nose full of berry fruit and spice. On the palate, flavors of dark chocolate, licorice, black and white pepper, and plums are given structure by silky tannins.
Pairs well with Mediterranean foods, grilled red meat, lamb. $27.99
Domaine Brusset, Rhone Valley, France
On this family estate established in 1947, the Brusset family combines traditional winemaking with new techniques introduced by each generation. Three wine-growers and winemakers with a variety of experiences, founder André Brusset (1910-1999), his son Daniel, and his grand-son Laurent, have all contributed to the distinctive character of Domaine Brusset. Domaine Brusset is located in the heart of the southern Côtes-du-Rhône valley vineyards, at Cairanne. Brusset’s 70 hectares of vineyards extend over the lands of five prestigious appellations: Gigondas, Cairanne, Rasteau, Côtes-du-Rhône, and Ventoux.
Les Travers 2020, Cairanne
Varietals: Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Cinsault. Alc. 13.5%
Each grape variety that makes up Les Travers is vinified separately and fermented in vats for 20 days. The wine is mature for 10 months, 70 percent in vats and 30 percent in 3- or 4-year-old barrels. The wine pours a deep ruby color, and shows
aromas of blackcurrant and elderberry. On the palate, there are full, concentrated flavors of blackcurrant and cherry, silky tannins, and a touch of pepper and spice on the finish.
Pairs well with duck, game meats, aged cheeses. $21.99
Tradition Le Grand Montmirail 2020, Gigondas Varietals: Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault Alc. 14%
Hand-picked and selected following strict ripeness checks, the grapes are fermented in vats for 21 days with no added yeast. The wine is brick red in color, and the nose is filled with very ripe dark plum, brambly fruits, and minerals. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has flavors of blue and black fruits and lovely rounded tannins. Pairs well with meaty stews, braised meat, lamb. $32.99
And don’t forget to check out what’s new in our beer case. We have a malty Oktoberfest from the von Trapp brewery and the wonderfully dark but slightly hoppy Robust Porter from Smuttynose.
