Sawyer Free 2025 (visit sawyerfree2025.org), the philanthropic capital campaign to fund a comprehensive renovation, modernization and expansion of Cape Annโs oldest public library, is proud to announce the December 1 release of a new video featuring John and Mollie Byrnes in support of the campaign. As two of Gloucesterโs leading philanthropists who generously support charitable and nonprofit causes across Cape Ann and beyond, the Byrnesโ imprimatur comes at an ideal time for the Sawyer Library Foundation, which has one month remaining to meet a $100,000 challenge grant by a private family foundation.
Since the matching-gift challengeโs October 18 launch, Gloucester has come together to donate more than $58,000 of the $100,000 goal. The Byrnes video can be viewed on the sawyerfree2025.org landing page or on the campaignโs YouTube channel, Sawyer Library Foundation 2025.
โWe like to support organizations that put money where it really makes a difference in peopleโs lives and the (new) Sawyer Library will make a difference in peopleโs lives,โ said John Byrnes. โThe various programming the library provides and the fact that itโs a community gathering spaceโthatโs going to really help raise people up.โ
Sawyer Free Library provides a lifeline of resources serving people from all walks of life, but itโs beset by severe limitations of space, navigation, technology and mobility device access. While our colleagues at the Sawyer Free Library continue to provide the best possible services and programming for our entire community, Sawyer Free 2025 is committed to rallying all of Cape Ann to support the campaign to remake our beloved institution so the space will finally reflect the amazing things that happen within the building.
โThe library is a wonderful community asset โฆ and itโs time,โ said Mollie Byrnes. โBuildings donโt last forever. A lot of people donโt want to be โthe first,โ then as they get used to the idea some change is happening and it really is good and they see enough other people buying into the idea and supporting it financially, they come around. I want this library to be a good part of this community.โ
โ(The Byrnes) know what theyโre about in this world and they consistently give to things they care about,โ said Beth Graham, a member of the Sawyer Library Foundation Steering Committee, a retired development executive and a Unitarian minister. โWhen I think of the Byrnes and Sawyer Free Library, so much of what they care about is embedded in this institutionโs mission and in what we do every day as an organization.โ
The Sawyer Free 2025 campaign is a transformational investment in Gloucesterโs future. The time-restricted, dollar-for-dollar match offer by a fund that wishes to remain anonymous represents a canโt-miss opportunity. If Gloucester and the surrounding Cape Ann community can raise that sum by midnight on December 31, the new library project will receive a matching gift of $100,000.
The most advanced Western democracies have embraced the fact that modern libraries are a nexus of education, community, innovation, economic advancement, technology, wellness, civic engagement, assimilation, belonging, preventative care, climate justice, lifelong learning, research and free programming. Gloucester deserves to be part of this revolution.
The Sawyer Free 2025 projectโs total cost is $29 million, a sum that includes built-in inflation costs through the completion of the project in 2025. The Sawyer Library Foundation, the fundraising arm of the campaign, has already secured $15.25 million in pledged donations and grant awards, including $1 million in donations in the first 150 days following the public launch of the campaign this past May.

GLOUCESTER ไธ Chief Edward Conley is pleased to report that the Gloucester Police Kops N Kids program will host a visit with Santa Claus at the Gloucester Police Community Impact Unit’s offices on Middle Street on Saturday.
Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Gloucester Police Department Community Impact Unit, 67 Middle St., Gloucester, MA
Santa Claus will visit the Gloucester Police Community Impact Unit to visit with community children and to sit for photographs. The event and photos are free, and there will be festive treats available for kids and guardians alike.
Members of the Community Impact Unit will decorate their conference room with a Christmas tree and festive backdrop for family photos with Santa. To view a video preview of the decorations, click here.
During the event, the Gloucester High School hockey team will be collecting new toys in their original packaging as part of a toy drive, so guests are encouraged to bring gifts if they are able.
Children are also asked to bring letters to Santa, along with a return address in case Santa has time to write back.
Kops N Kids launched in 2016, under the guidance of Lt. Jeremiah Nicastro, as a way for officers to engage with children in our community. Oftentimes when children first engage with a police officer it is during a traumatic event. Kops n Kids changes that by making a positive connection at a young age.
Community Impact Unit Officer Joe Parady, and School Resource Officers Mike Scola and Pete Sutera have grown the Kops n Kids program to include Ace, a Community Resource Dog, SRO_Gaming an interactive online gaming platform, the Youth Anglers Program, and after school programs. |

Our โIndoor Patioโ opens tomorrow! A perfect place to watch a game with friends, host a team party, celebrate a Birthday, and on and on! Itโs casual dining with great food, wine, beer and liquor (on request) and a big screen TV!
